17:0 Yazid [II] was succeeded by Sham, also known as Hisham (Heshm) [724-743], who ruled for nineteen years:

17:1 Եւ աս յառաջնում ամի իշխանութեանն իւրոյ խորհուրդ վատ ի մէջ առեալ՝ առաքէր զոմն զօրավար, որում անուն էր Հերթ՝ աշխարհագիր առնել ընդ աշխարհս Հայոց վասն ծանրացուցանելոյ զանուր լծոյ ծառայութեան հարկատրութեան ազգի ազգի չարեօք, որպէս թէ դժուարելով ընդ բարեմտութիւնն Օմարայ, եթէ անիրաւութեամբ ծախեաց զմթերս գանձուցն, զորս համբարեալ էր իշխանացն որ յառաջ քան զնա:

17:1 In the first year of his reign, he conceived the disastrous plan of sending a certain general named Harith (Hert’) to conduct a census throughout the land of the Armenians. This was aimed at making (even) more onerous the oppressive yoke of tax service through diverse evils, and at showing dissatisfaction with the benevolence of (the former caliph) ’Umar, as though he had inappropriately spent the treasures which had been accumulated by the caliphs preceding him:

17:2 Եւ բազում վտանգ հասուցանէր աշխարհիս, մինչ զի ամենեցուն հառաչել ի վերայ անհանգիստ նեղութեանցն, յորմէ ոչ գոյր ապրել ումեք յանհնարին վտանգիցն: Եւ յայնմհետէ առաւել ծանրացաւ ձեռն նորա ի վերայ աշխարհիս Հայոց:

17:2 Yazid [II] visited many calamities upon this land of ours, to the point that everyone was groaning from the unrelenting, inescapable, and unendurable oppression. Thereafter his hand was to weigh even more heavily upon the land of the Armenians:
