4:1 Եւ յետ այնորիկ ըստ աւետարանական չափուցն՝ ի ծառայութիւն Աստուծոյ մարդասիրին դարձեալ, մերկանայր այնուհետեւ զիշխանակիր ցանկութիւնսն, եւ առեալ զխաչն պարծանաց՝ ելանէր զկնի ամենակեցոյց խաչելոյն:

4:1 And subsequently, in compliance with the precepts of the gospel, he devoted himself to the service of God the lover of men. Thenceforward he was divested of princely passions, and taking the exalted cross went after the all-sustaining Crucified:

4:2 Եւ հաճեալ հրամանացն՝ ի խաչակիր գունդն Քրիստոսի խառնէր, եւ անդէն վաղվաղակի ի միայնակեցական կարգ մտանէր:

4:2 And in obedience to the commands of faith, joined the crusading legion of Christ, and soon entered the monastic order:
|
4:3 Բազում եւ ազգի ազգի վշտակեցութիւն ըստ աւետարանին կրէր ամենայն իրաց. ամենայն կրթութեամբ հոգեւորացն զանձն տուեալ՝ միայնաւորութեան, լեռնակեցութեան, քաղցի եւ ծարաւոյ եւ բանջարաճաշակութեանց, արգելանաց անլուսից, խարազնազգեստ եւ գետնատարած անկողնոց:

4:3 He experienced many kinds of hardships, in keeping with the precepts of the gospel. He subjected himself to all types of spiritual discipline - solitude, mountain-dwelling, hunger, thirst, and living on herbs, in dark cells, clad in sackcloth, with the floor as his bed:

4:4 Եւ բազում անգամ զհեշտական հանգիստ գիշերոյն եւ զհարկ քնոյ՝ յոտնաւոր տքնութեան ի թաւթափել ական վճարէր: Եւ զայս ամենայն առնէր ոչ սակաւ ժամանակս:

4:4 Often, in the twinkling of an eye, he would end in standing vigil, a night’s pleasant rest and much needed sleep. And he did all this not a few times:

4:5 Եւ գտեալ եւս զոմանս՝ յինքն յարեցուցանէր՝ աշակերտեալ նմին սովորական աւետարանութեան:
|
4:5 And having found a few persons, he caused them to adhere to him, making them pupils in the same evangelical exercise:
|
4:6 Եւ այնպէս ամենայն փորձութեանց ի վերայ հասելոց կամայական քաջութեամբ տարեալ եւ պայծառացեալ՝ ծանաւթական եւ հաճոյ լինէր Աստուծոյ եւ մարդկան:

4:6 And thus, bearing with a courageous will all the temptations that came upon him, and growing in radiance, he became known and beloved of God and men:
