17:0 Յաղագս թէ զիա՛րդ յուզեաց Շապուհ արքայ Պարսից ի վերայ քրիստոնէութեան:

17:0 How Shapuh, king of Iran, initiated a persecution against those of the Christian faith:

17:1 Այլ ի ժամուն յայնմիկ, յորում սպանաւ երէցն Մարին հանդերձ եւթանասնօքն, յարոյց հալածանս մեծ Շապուհ արքայն քրիստոնէութեանն հաւատոց. հարկօք եւ պէսպէս վշտօք նեղէր զնոսա եւ հարուածովք բազում:

17:1 When the presbyter Mari and the seventy others were killed, king Shapuh began a great persecution of members of the Christian faith. He oppressed them with taxes, diverse sorrows and blows:

17:2 Եւ յետ այսորիկ հրաման տայր ընդ ամենայն տեղիս իշխանութեան իւրոյ, թէ որ միանգամ զանուն քրիստոնէութեան ունիցի յիշխանութեան իմում, զամենայն մարդ միանգամայն հանցեն ընդ սուր սատակեսցեն. զի մի՛ գտցի յիշխանութեան իմում, որ քրիստոնեայ անուն անուանեսցէ զանձն իւր:

17:2 Then he issued an order throughout all the places under his sway: “Whoever under my authority even bears the name of a Christian shall be removed and put to the sword, so that there will be no one under my authority who calls himself a Christian:

17:3 Ապա բեւրս բիւրուց կոտորէին, եւ հազարս հազարաց. զի այնպէս տուաւ հրաման ի թագաւորէն, զի ամենեւին քրիստոնեայ անուն ի սահմանս նորա մի՛ գտցի:

17:3 So they destroyed myriads upon myriads and thousands upon thousands, for such was the king’s order, that no Christian reside within his borders:
