23:0 The tyrant Bardas leaves Baghdad and enters the land of Greece:

23:1 Եւ յայսմ ամի, որ էր [ՆԼԵ] թուականն Հայոց, յորում չարչարեալ մեռանէր Գաբրիէլ՝ երէց Սեբաստիոյ, եւ մետրապաւլիտն, որ էր պատճառ չարչարանաց նորա, չարաչար մահու չարչարեալ ի Բուլղարս սատակէր վրէժխնդրութեամբն Աստուծոյ, եւ հարաւ զաւրն Վասլի յաշխարհին Բուլղարաց:

23:1 In this year, i.e., in the year [435 = 986] of the Armenian chronology, when Gabriel, the priest of Sebasteia, died in torture, and the metropolitan, the perpetrator of his murder, died in cruel tortures in Sebasteia, as if due to vengeance from God. In this land, Basil’s army suffered a defeat:

23:2 Ի նոյն ամի թագաւորն Վարդ ելեալ ի Բաղդատայ՝ ի Մելտենի մտանէ. վասն զի ԻպնԽոսրով, զոր յառաջն ասացաք, ի մահուանն իւրոյ պատուէր տուեալ որդւոյն իւրոյ՝ արձակել ի կապանաց զթագաւորն Վարդ, զի էր դաշնադիր երդմամբ:

23:2 In the same year, King Bardas, leaving Baghdad, entered Melitene; for Ibn Xosrov, whom we spoke about before, at his death ordered his son to release from the fetters of King Bardas, in consequence of the oath promise given by him to the latter:

23:3 Եւ նորա զինուք եւ հանդերձիւք եւ երիվարաւք արձակեալ զնա ամենայն իւրայովքն, եւ հանեալ ըստ քաղաքն Բաղդատայ բացագոյն ինչ. ամենայն խառնիճաղանճ բազմութիւն քաղաքին շարժեցաւ զկնի՝ սպանանել զնա:

23:3 Having taken Bardas far beyond the city walls of Baghdad, he released him with his entourage, (providing) with weapons, clothes and horses. A large crowd of city residents, having learned about it, rushed after him to kill him:

23:4 Այլ վայրաբնակ Արապկացն ընդդէմ կացեալ, առեալ զթագաւորն՝ ընդ անշէն տեղիս ածեն ի վրանս իւրեանց եւ անդուստ արագ հասուցանեն ի Մելտենի քաղաք ի Բաբելոնէ [ԼԱ] յաւուրս:

23:4 But the Arabians, who lived in the desert, went out against the crowd and, taking the king, led him through the uninhabited places to their tents, and from there they immediately brought him to the city of Melitene, (distant) from Babylon at a distance of [31] days of the journey:

23:5 Եւ ամենայն զաւրք աշխարհին առ հասարակ ի հնազանդութիւն գային, եւ Բատն Ապահունեաց, եւ Նփրկերտոյ ամիրայն, եւ վայրաբնակ Արապիկքն որ ընդ նմա:

23:5 The entire army of the country in general, including Bat, the Amir of Apahunik’s and Nprkert, with all the desert Arabians, expressed their obedience:

23:6 Եւ դարձեալ առաջին խռովութիւնն շարժեցաւ յաշխարհին Յունաց:
