16:0 How Parhen occupied the patriarchal throne:

16:1 Յայնմ ժամանակի համարեցան արժանի զՓառէն ոմն երէց, ի գաւառէն Տարօնոյ, ի մեծէ մարգարէանոցէն Յովհաննու, որ էր նախ շինեալ տուն աղօթից եւ խնդրուածոց ի հանգիստ սրբոցն, զի տեղին այն նմա էր հաւատացեալ:

16:1 At that time they considered worthy of the katoghikosate a certain presbyter named Parhen from the district of Taron, from the great chapel of John the Baptist, a man who had earlier constructed the house of prayer and supplication as a repository for the saints:

16:2 Ապա կոչեցին զնա առ արքայն. եւ առաքեաց զնա պատարագօք թագաւորն, եւ հրովարտակօք եւ ճոխ իշխանօքն որ ընդ նմա առաքեցանն, մեծ զօրավարն Հայոց` որում անուն էր Վասակ, ի մամիկոնեան տոհմէն. եւ Մեհենդակ ըՌըշտունի, եւ Անդովկ սիւնի, եւ Արշաւիր կամսարական, մեծք եւ գլխաւորք նահապետք. եւ տասն այր այլ, արք պատուականք, առին գնացին զՓառէն սուրբ ի մայրաքաղաքն Գամրաց ի Կեսարիա, եւ անդ ձեռնադրեցին զայն ի կաթողիկոսութիւն Հայոց մեծաց:

16:2 They entrusted the position to him. They summoned Parhen to visit the king. The king selected the following illustrious princes: the great general of Armenia, named Vasak from the Mamikonean tohm, Mehendak Erheshtuni, Andovk Siwnik, Arshawir Kamsarakan, great and principal nahapets, and ten other honorable men. He sent them with gifts and hrovartaks to fetch and accompany the blessed Parhen to the capital city of Cappadocia, Caesarea, where they ordained him to the katoghikosate of Greater Armenia:

16:3 Եւ գան դարձեալ յիւրեանց աշխարհն խաղաղութեամբ:

16:3 And they returned thence to their own land in peace:
|
16:4 Եւ նստաւ Փառէն յաթոռ հայրապետական սակաւ ժամանակս. եւ այլ ինչ չհամարձակէր նա կամ խրատել ինչ, կամ յանդիմանել զմոլորութիւն ինչ զուրուք կամ զամբարշտութիւնս:

16:4 Parhen occupied the patriarchal throne for a short while. Although he did not dare to advise or reprimand anyone’s error or impiety, he nonetheless kept his own person holy:

16:5 Բայց միայն զիւր անձն սուրբ պահէր, եւ ի հարկէ ընգերէր անօրէն թագաւորին, եւ ըստ նորին կամացն երթեալ հնազանդեալ:

16:5 He was obliged to befriend the impious king, submitted to him, and acted according to his wishes:

16:6 Եւ յետ այսորիկ հանգեաւ, եւ յաւելաւ առ հարս իւր. եւ առեալ պաշտօնէիցն եկեղեցւոյ բանակին զմարմինն, գնացեալք ի գաւառն Տարօնոյ` տարան ի յագարակն մեծի մարգարէանոցին Յովհաննու, որ էր ինքն ի կենդանութեանն իւրում յառաջագոյն բնակեալ. եւ անդ գեղեցիկ շիրիմ գործեալ, եւ զսորա ոսկերս ծածկեցին:

16:6 After this he was gathered to his fathers. Clerics of the banak’s church took his body and committed his bones in an attractive tomb which they constructed on the agarak of the great chapel of John in the district of Taron, a place where Parhen had lived during his lifetime:
