51:1 Սպանումն Արգամայ եւ որդւոց նորա:

51:1 The murder of Argam and his sons:
|
51:2 Ի չափ հասեալ Արտաւազդայ որդւոյ Արտաշիսի` եղեւ այր քաջ, անձնահաճ եւ հպարտ. եւ նախանձ բերելով ընդ ծերունւոյն Արգամայ` հրապուրեաց զհայր իւր ցասնուլ Արգամայ, որպէս թէ թագաւորել ի վերայ ամենայնի խորհիցի:

51:2 When Artavazd, son of Artashēs, reached maturity he proved to be a valiant man, vainglorious and proud. Bearing rancor against the old Argam he incited his own father to quarrel with him on the pretext that he was planning to dominate the whole kingdom:

51:3 Այսպէս ընկեցեալ զնա ի պատուոյն` ինքն առնու զերկրորդութիւնն:
|
51:3 In this way he deprived him of his honor and gained the second rank for himself:
|
51:4 Յետ այսորիկ երթալով Արտաշիսի ի ճաշ Արգամայ, կասկած իմն անկեալ, իբր թէ դաւել զարքայն խորհիցին` յարուցանեն որդիքն արքային ապշոպ, եւ անդէն իսկ ի հացին քարշեն զալիսն Արգամայ:

51:4 After this Artashēs went to a banquet of Argam’s; on the pretext of a suspicion that a plot was planned against the king, the king’s son raised a tumult and at the very table pulled out Argam’s white hair:

51:5 Եւ խռովութեամբ մեծաւ եկեալ յԱրտաշատ Արտաշէս արքայ` դարձեալ արձակեաց զորդի իւր զՄաժան մեծաւ գնդաւ, եւ զբազումս յազգէն Մուրացեան սպանանել հրամայեաց, եւ զապարանսն Արգամայ այրել. եւ զհարճ նորին, որ կարի չքնաղ էր գեղով եւ մնացեալ գնացիւք ոտից, զոր կոչէին Մանդու, ածել ի հարճութիւն Արտաշիսի:

51:5 In great confusion King Artashēs went to Artashat and sent back his son Mazhan with a large force, ordering him to slaughter many of the Muratsean family, to burn Argam’s palace, and to bring his concubine called Mandu, who was very remarkable for her beauty and carriage, as a concubine for Artashēs:

51:6 Զոր դարձեալ նուաճեալ յետ երկուց ամաց, ի բաց տալ հրամայէ զինչսն բայց ի հարճէն:

51:6 Two years later he further weakened Argam and ordered him to give up his possessions with the exception of the concubine:
|
51:7 Իսկ Արտաւազդայ ոչ շատացեալ առնուլ ի բաց ի նոցանէ զերկրորդութեանն պատիւ` յաւելու եւս հանել եւ զՆախճաւան, եւ ըստ հիւսիսոյ Երասխայ զամենայն գիւղս, յորում եւ ապարանս եւ բերդս ի նոցանէ շինէ իւր ի ժառանգութիւն:

51:7 But Artavazd was not satisfied with depriving them of the second rank; he also seized Nakhchavan and all the villages to the south of the Araxes, and their palaces and fortresses there he appropriated for his own inheritance. Argam’s sons, unable to endure this, opposed him in war:

51:8 Այսմ ոչ կարացեալ համբերել որդւոցն Արգամայ` ընդդիմանան նմա պատերազմաւ. բայց յաղթեալ արքայորդւոյն` սատակէ զամենայն ծնունդս Արգամայ հանդերձ հարբն, եւ որք միանգամ երեւելիք էին յազգէ Մուրացեան. եւ գրաւէ յինքն զշէնս եւ զամենայն իշխանութիւնս նոցա:

51:8 But the king’s son gained the victory and slaughtered all of Argam’s offspring with their father and all the eminent men of the Muratsean family; and he confiscated for himself their villages and all their lands:
|
51:9 Եւ ոչ ոք ապրեաց ի նոցանէն, բայց միայն աննշանք ոմանք եւ կրտսերք փախուցեալ առ Արտաշէս ապրեցան ի դրան արքունի:

51:9 Not one of them survived, save only a few insignificant and lesser persons who fled to Artashēs and gained refuge at the royal court:
|
51:10 Այս Արգամ է, որ յառասպելին Արգաւանն անուանի, եւ ա՛յս պատճառ պատերազմին ընդ Արտաւազդայ:

51:10 It is this Argam who is called Argavan in the fable, and this is the cause of his war with Artavazd:
