39:0 The extermination of the Iberian army in the city of Khlat:

39:1 Զայսու ժամանակաւ լուեալ զայն կիւռապաղատին Դաւթի՝ առաքէ զզաւրս Վրաց ի պաշարումն քաղաքին Խլաթայ:

39:1 Around this time, kouropalates David, having learned about what had happened, sent an Iberian army to besiege the city of Khlat:

39:2 Որոց եկեալ ի ձմեռնային աւուրս ի [ՆԽԶ] թուականին՝ սրով եւ սովով նեղէին զքաղաքն, եւ զեկեղեցին Հայոց, որ արտաքոյ պարսպին, եպիսկոպոսարան եւ ուխտի տեղիք լեալ էին յառաջին շինութեանն Հայոց, եւ զՍուրբ Խաչն եւ զսուրբ Գամաղիէլ՝ զայն Վրաց զաւրուն գոմս եւ իջեւանս արարին:

39:2 It came in the winter of [446-997], and through famine and the sword caused many disasters to the city. The Armenian Church, which was outside the city wall, the Bishop’s Palace, the places where Armenians went to worship in their flourishing time, (churches) in the name of the Holy Cross and St. Gamaliel - all this was converted into stables and camps for the Iberian army:

39:3 Եւ Տաճիկքն ի պարսպէն աղաղակէին, եթէ “Զսրբութիւն քրիստոնէիցդ ա՞յդպէս առնէք եւ դուք քրիստոնեայքդ:

39:3 From the city walls, the Arabs shouted: “Do you, Christians, honor the Christian shrine:

39:4 Եւ Վրացեացն պատասխանեալ, եթէ “Մեք զհայ եկեղեցին եւ զձեր մզկիթն միապէս ընդունիմք”, վասն որոյ շարժեցաւ ցասումն Աստծոյ ի վերայ նոցա:

39:4 The Iberians answered: “We look at the Armenian Church and at your mosque in the same way.” As a result of this, the wrath of God overtook them:

39:5 Եւ փոխանակ որդւոյն Մրուանայ եկաց ամիրայ ի վերայ նոցա եղբայր նորա, եւ նա եւս քեռորդի Բատին. եւ տիրեալ Ամթայ եւ առեալ սակաւ զաւրս՝ գայ ի վերայ զաւրացն Վրաց, որք պաշարէին զԽլաթ յաւուր մեծի զատկին, ի [ՆԽԷ] թուականին:

39:5 Instead of his son Mruan, his brother, also a nephew (by sister) Bat, became Amir, who, having taken possession of Amida, at the head of a small detachment, went to the Iberian army, besieging Xlat on the very day of Easter, in [447=998] year:

39:6 Եւ պատերազմաւ վառեալ ընդդէմ միմեանց՝ քաջակորով աղեղնաւորքն Տայոց խոցոտեալ ի նոցանէ յոլովս. եւ նոքա անդրէն դարձեալ իջեւանս առնէին:

39:6 When the slaughter began, the courageous arrows of the Tayk’s to many of them ([i.e. e.] from the army of the Amir) inflicted wounds, (so that the latter were forced) to return back and settle down in the parking lots:

39:7 Եւ յայնմ գիշերի զկնի զատկին ցասումն Աստուծոյ եհաս ի վերայ Վրաց զաւրուն. եւ ինքեանք յինքեանց փախստական լինէին ի գիշերի առանց պատերազմի:

39:7 On the night after Easter, the wrath of God visited the Iberian army; for by night their warriors fled one from the other without a fight:

39:8 Զոր իմացեալ տաճիկ զաւրուն եւ քաղաքացեացն՝ հետամուտ եղեալ հարկանէին ի հարուածս սաստկագոյնս՝ ի սուր սուսերի մաշելով զնոսա:

39:8 Arabs and the townspeople, learning about this, began to pursue them, inflicting a severe defeat on them and exterminating them with the blade of the sword:

39:9 Յայնմ փախստի մեռաւ մաժիստռոսն Բագարատ՝ որդի Թոռնկայ աբեղայի: Եւ կալանաւոր առնեն զԲակուրան իշխանաց իշխան եւ զայլսն բազումս:

39:9 During this flight master Bagarat, the nephew (by brother) of the monk Tornik, died, and the prince of princes Bakuran and many others were taken prisoner:
