21:0 Յայնմ ժամանակի առաքէ իշխանն Իսմայելի Հեշմ ի վերայ ազգիս Հայոց զՄրուան որդի Մահմետի փոխանակ Սեթայ, որում Հարաշ կոչէին:

21:0 In that period Hisham, caliph of the Ishmaelites, sent Marwan (Mrwan) (Marwan ibn Muhammad, ruler of Arminiya, [732-744], Muhammad’s son (to rule) over the Armenian people in place of Sa’id, whom they called al-Harashi:

21:1 Իբրեւ հասանէր Մրուան ի քաղաքն Դուին՝ յանդիման լինէին նմա նախարարք Հայոց: Եւ խօսի ընդ նոսա բանիւք խաղաղութեան, եւ կոչէ առ ինքն զԱշոտ որդի Վասակայ ի տանէ բագրատունւոյ, եւ տայր նմա իշխանութիւն պատրկութեան ի վերայ աշխարհիս Հայոց հրամանաւ Հեշմայ, եւ բազում պատուով պատուէր զնա:

21:1 When Marwan had reached the city of Dwin, the lords of Armenia came out to meet him. (Marwan) spoke words of peace with them and summoned Ashot, Vasak’s son, from the Bagratid House. (Marwan) gave him the authority of patrician over the land of the Armenians, by order of Hisham, and exalted him with many honors:

21:2 Իսկ իմացեալ որդւոցն Սմբատայ զպատիւն Աշոտոյ, զի մեծացաւ անձն նորա յաչս Հեշմայ եւ զօրավարին Մրուանայ՝ եւ յոյժ խեռութեամբ կէին ընդ նմա, մինչեւ հասանէր գժտութիւն նոցա յականջս որդւոյն Մահմետի:

21:2 However when Smbat’s sons learned about the honor given to Ashot, who had been exalted by Hisham and by General Marwan, they were furiously angry. Word of their discontent reached the ears of Muhammad’s son who immediately ordered that they be arrested:

21:3 Եւ վաղվաղակի հրամայէ ունել զնոսա, եւ առաքէր առ իշխանն Իսմայելի զԳրիգոր եւ զԴաւիթ, որք էին ի տոհմէ Մամիկոնեան. եւ գրէր ամբաստանութիւն զնոցանէն, թէ հակառակք եւ խազմարարք են իշխանութեանս Աշոտոյ:

21:3 Marwan sent Grigor and Dawit’ of the Mamikonean clan to the Ishmaelite caliph, and he wrote an accusation against them stating that they were agitators opposed to Ashot’s authority:

21:4 Եւ հրամայէր տանել զնոսա յԵմանն կոչեցեալ, որ է անապատ, եւ դնել զնոսա ի կալանս բանտի մինչեւ ցվախճան կենաց իւրեանց:

21:4 Caliph Hisham ordered that they be taken to the desert called Yemen (Eman) and placed in confinement in prison for the rest of their lives:

21:5 Իսկ իբրեւ հաստատեցաւ իշխանութիւն պատրկութեանն Աշոտոյ՝ երթայ առ իշխանն Իսմայելի վասն բռնութեան աշխարհիս, զի յերից ամաց եւ անդր արգելեալ էր զնախարարացն Հայոց եւ նոցին հեծելոցն զխածիթայսն. յանդիման լինէր Հեշմայ եւ խօսէր առաջի նորա բանս արգոյս եւ իմաստունս:

21:5 Once the authority of the patrician Ashot had been established (Ashot [III] Bagratuni, presiding prince [732-748], he went to the caliph of the Ishmaelites regarding the tyranny (imposed upon) our land. This was due to the fact that for more than three years the stipend (which should have been paid) to the Armenian lords and to their cavalry had been withheld. (Ashot) faced Hisham and spoke words of truth and wisdom in his presence:

21:6 Եւ մեծացուցանէր զնա ըստ արժանւոյն եւ կատարէր զխնդիր նորա, եւ տայր հրաման կշռել ի ձեռս նորա ամի ամի [ՃՌ] զերից ամացն:

21:6 And (the caliph) exalted him worthily and acceded to his request. He ordered that (the sum of) [100,000] (pieces of silver) for the (past) three years be weighed out for him:

21:7 Եւ յայնմհետէ յաւուրս իւրոյ իշխանութեան անխափան գայր նոյն սակ արծաթին ամենայն հեծելոցն:

21:7 Thereafter throughout his tenure the same level (or payment) in silver for the cavalry was received without obstruction:
