39:0 Յաղագս ոստիկանութիւն Յուսփայ եղբօր Ափշնի, եւ մահուան Շապհոյ եւ Դաւթի՝ եղբարց արքային Սմբատայ:

 39:0 The Rule of Yusuf Brother of Afshin as Governor, and the Death of Shapuh and Dawit’ Brothers of King Smbat:

39:1 Բայց թագաւորն Սմբատ իբրեւ լուաւ, եթէ Յուսուփ պայազատէ զպետութիւնն զայն փոխանակ Ափշնի եղբօր իւրոյ, եդ ի մտի իւրում ոչ եւս դարձեալ դաւանս կրել ի խափանեալ երկիւղէն, եւ կամ դաշինս սիրոյ դնել ընդ այնոսիկ, որոց իրաւունք բարձեալ է յերեսաց նոցա եւ բնաւ հեռացեալ բան արդարի լեզուաց նոցա:

 39:1 When king Smbat learned that Yusuf had succeeded to his brother Afshin’s domain, he decided never again to suffer treachery from the suppressed menace, nor make pacts of friendship with those whose rights had been taken away from them, and from whose mouths righteous words were always absent:

39:2 Ապա գրէ հրովարտակս եւ առաքէ դեսպանս եւ ընծայս գեղեցկայարմարս Իսմայէլեան ամիրապետի ի Բաբիլօն, եւ հայցէ ի բաց զինքն հատանել յազգէ յայնմանէ. որ իրաւունք Աստուծոյ տարամերժեալ տրոհեալ է ի նոցանէ, եւ ի բարուց անտի՝ որ ի չարն միշտ հակամէտ գտեալ:

 39:2 Then, he wrote a letter, and sent envoys with appropriate gifts to the Ishmaelite caliph in Babylon. He asked to be set free from the domination of the aforementioned dynasty, as the laws of God had dissociated him from them and their ways, which were always extremely prone to wicked deeds:

39:3 Զոր իբրեւ ընթերցեալ զնամակն եւ լուեալ զպայման պատգամացն՝ վաղվաղակի խնդութեամբ, զոր խնդրեացն՝ կատարէր. եւ թեթեւաբեռն զսակն արքունի արարեալ եւ յինքն իսկ հրաւիրեալ՝ առ ինքն զմիտս թագաւորին կացուցանէր:

 39:3 When the caliph read the letter and became aware of Smbat’s demands, he immediately gladly carried out his wishes, and reducing the amount of the royal tribute, won over the heart of the king, to whom he extended an invitation to come to him:

39:4 Եւ ապա երեւելի զգեստ արքունական, եւ թագ արքայական եւ կամար ականակապ ի համակ ոսկոյ, եւ սուսեր պատուական եւ երիվարս օդագնացս իմն, կազմուածով զինուց եւ զարդուց առաքէ Սմբատայ:

 39:4 Then, he sent to Smbat a magnificent royal robe, a crown, a gem-studded belt made out of pure gold, a precious sword and swift steeds in full armor and ornament:

39:5 Զոր իբրեւ առ ընկալաւ՝ յոյժ ուրախ լեալ զուարթացեալ զուարճացաւ: Եւ այնուհետեւ ի կարգս այլոց եւս հնազանդելոց եւ նա եւս մտանէր ի կապուածս լծոյ ամիրապետին. եւ այսպէս անտարրապէս եւ անշուշտ ի կամս արքունականս զկամս իւր բերեալ նուաճէր:

 39:5 Upon receiving these, Smbat rejoiced greatly. Subsequently, like all the other tributaries, he also brought his neck under the yoke of the caliph. Thus, he submitted totally to the will of the caliph:

39:6 Զայսու ժամանակաւ մեծ սպարապետն Հայոց Շապուհ՝ եղբայր արքային Սմբատայ, կիսակտուր կենօք վճարեալ զսնոտիասէր կեանս՝ վախճանեցաւ, յաւելեալ առ հարս իւր:

 39:6 At this time, the great sparapet of Armenia, Shapuh, who was the brother of king Smbat, came prematurely to the end of his futile existence, and joined his ancestors:

39:7 Եւ անդ ապա չուեալ եկեալ արքայ Սմբատ համագունդ իւրայօքն համազգեօք՝ եւ արարեալ կոծ մեծ ի վերայ նորա՝ եդին զնա ընդ հարս իւրում ի շիրիմս քնարանացն, որ ի քաղաքագեօղն Բագարանու:

 39:7 Thereupon, king Smbat, accompanied by all of his kinsmen, came to the funeral. They greatly bemoaned Shapuh’s loss and buried him among his ancestors in the cemetery located in the town of Bagaran:

39:8 Եւ ապա կացուցանէր արքայ Սմբատ զանձնագեղ եւ զբարեվայելուչ երիտասարդն զԱշոտ՝ որդի Շապհոյ, սպարապետ Հայոց փոխանակ հօր իւրոյ:

 39:8 Then, in place of his father, king Smbat set up the handsome and comely youth Ashot, the son of Shapuh, as sparapet of Armenia:

39:9 Իսկ նա ի սկզբան սպարապետական պայազատութեանն խորհուրդ բարեաց զանձամբ արկեալ՝ շինէ ապա զպճնապայծառ եկեղեցին Բագարանու, որ ի վերայ Ախուրեան գետոյ. եւ զարդարէ բազում եւ երեւելի սպասուք, եւ առնէ նաւակատիս աստուածային գոգցես պատշաճողութեամբ:

 39:9 Upon his succession to his duties as sparapet, the latter conceived the wonderful idea of building the beautifully ornamented church of Bagaran on the bank of the Axurean River, and decorating it with many valuable vessels, he conducted the consecration ceremonies in a proper manner:

39:10 Զկնի ապա հիմնադրէ եկեղեցի ի քաղաքագեօղն Կողբ բազմածախ փարթամութեամբ, եւ ստիպով ջանայր գտանել եւ զկատարումն նորա, թէ տէր կամեսցի:

 39:10 After this, in the komopolis of Koghb he founded another church, on which he spent a great amount of money, and tried very hard to bring it to completion with God’s will:

39:11 Յետ սակաւ ժամանակի ապա վախճան կրէր ի կենացս այսոցիկ եւ միւս եղբայրն արքայի Դաւիթ, որ էր իշխան իշխանացս Հայոց՝ այր համեստ եւ հարթ հաւասարութեամբ ի բոլոր գործառնութիւն բարեաց. ընդ որ եւ յաւէտ իմն սգացեալ արքայի եւ տագնապաւ տարակուսանաց մխեալ ի խորս խաւարին սգոյ՝ ի մշտնջենաւոր տխրութիւնս զինքն արկեալ. ուստի եւ մխիթարական կարգօք հաստատեալ իմ զնա ի յոյս կենացն անմահից՝ վերականգնեցի ի գլորմանէն յիրս գործոց թագաւորական յարդարմանց, հոգս տանիլ պիտառութեան կենցաղականացս, որ հաւատացաւ նմա յԱստուծոյ խնամել զհօտ իւր:

 39:11 A short time later, the king’s other brother, Dawit’, who was the presiding prince (ishxan ishxanac’) of Armenia, and a humble man with a sense of equanimity in all his transactions, died. The king mourned his death greatly. In his anxiety, he was deeply immersed in the gloom of grief, and cast himself into the abyss of eternal sadness. With consoling words I restored in him the hope of eternal life, and saved the works of the kingdom from deterioration, so that he might take care of wordly necessities, a task which was entrusted to him by God in order that he might tend to His flock:
