37:0 On the death of the Amir of Bat; the ruin of Manazkert; parish of Mamlan; meeting with kouropalates David:

37:1 Այլ նախ քան զայս սակաւ ամաւք յառաջ ամիրայն Ապահունեաց եւ Նփրկերտոյ Բատն մեռանի ի պատերազմի ընդ վայրաբնակ Արապկացն. եւ փոխանակ նորա եկաց ամիրայ որդի քուեր նորա որդի Մրուանայ:

37:1 A few years earlier, the Amir of Apahunik and Nprkert, Bat, died in a battle with the desert Arabians, whose place was taken by his nephew (by sister), Mruan:

37:2 Իսկ ի մեռանել Բատին կիւրապաղատն Տայոց Դաւիթ պաշարեալ զՄանազկերտ քաղաք, սրով եւ սովով նեղեալ՝ առնու զնա. յորմէ հանեալ արձակեաց զՏաճկաստանեայսն, եւ ինքն լնու զքաղաքն Հայ եւ Վրացի բնակչաւք ընդ իւրով իշխանութեամբ:

37:2 When Bat died, the Armenian kouropalates David laid siege to the city of Manazkert and forced him to surrender with hunger and sword. He led the Arabs out of there and let them go and filled the city with inhabitants from Armenians and Iberians, who recognized his authority:

37:3 Յայս պատճառէ ի նախանձ բարկութեան բրդեցան ամենայն Պարսիկք եւ Տաճիկք. եւ առաքեն դեսպանս պատգամաւ առ Դաւիթ կիւրապաղատն՝ դարձուցանել ի նոսա զքաղաքն, ապա թէ ոչ՝ պատերազմաւ պատահեսցեն նմա:

37:3 The Persians and Arab, irritated by this, sent ambassadors to David the kouropalates with a proposal to return the city, otherwise they would be forced to go to war against it:

37:4 Որոց ընդդէմ պատասխանիս լուեալ՝ ժողովին զաւրաց բազմութիւն եւ ամիրայն Ատրպատականի Մամլան, գան ի գաւառն Ծաղկոյոտն ի գիւղն, որ Կոստեանքն կոչի:

37:4 The envoys, having received a refusal, began to gather a large army and, together with Mamlan, the Amir of Atrpatakan, entered the district of Cakhkoyoten (of the Ayrarat province and occupied) a village called Kosteank:

37:5 Իսկ կիւռապաղատն Դաւիթ եւ արքայն Հայոց Գագիկ եւ Աբաս ընդ նմա, եւ Բագարատ՝ թագաւոր Վրաց, գան ընդդէմ նոցա ի գաւառն Բագրեւանդ, բանակ մեծ բոլորեալ ի Վաղարշակերտ քաղաքի:

37:5 Bagarat [III] went against them to the Bagrewand district and formed a huge camp in the city of Vagharshapat:

37:6 Իսկ պարսիկ զաւրուն զարհուրեալ յայտնապէս պատերազմել՝ գունդ հատեալ եւ ցայգագնացս արարեալ՝ ղամպարաւք եւ ջահիւք այրեցին զգիշերն ամենայն զկողմն Բագրեւանդայ եւ յոլով շէնս, որ ըստ արեւելից, եւ ինքեանք դարձան յերկիրն իւրեանց:

37:6 The Persian troops, fearing to enter into an open battle, separated and all night did not cease to set fire to the whole Bagrewand country and many villages that were to the east of it; after which they went to their own land:
