17:0 Յաղագս Շահակայ` որ էր ի զաւակէ Աղբիանոս եպիսկոպոսի, որ յաջորդեաց զտեղի հայրապետացն աթոռոյն. եւ թէ՛ որպէս յայնմ ժամանակի երկիրն Հայոց թողեալք զտէր եւ զպատուիրանս նորա:

17:0 Shahak, son of bishop Aghbianos, who succeeded on the patriarchal throne, and how the country of Armenia abandoned the Lord and His Commandments:

17:1 Ապա յայնմ ժամանակի միաբան խորհեցան աշխարհօրէն խորհուրդ, եթէ ո՛ւմ պարտ իցէ զհայրապետութեանն զկաթողիկոսութիւն ունել:
|
17:1 Then at that time the people unitedly held counsel in a popular assembly [ashxarhoren xorhurd] to decide to whom they should give the katoghikosate of the patriarchate:
|
17:2 Ապա իբրեւ ոչ ոք գոյր ի տանէն Գրիգորի այնմ արժանի, ապա նմանեցուցին զՇահակ ոմն անուն ի տոհմէ զաւակին Աղբիանոս եպիսկոպոսին:

17:2 But since there was no one worthy of it from the tun of Gregory, they designated a certain Shahak from the tohm of the son of bishop Aghbianos:
|
17:3 Եւ տան զնա ի ձեռս իշխանին մարդպետութեանն, որում անուն իւր Հայր կոչէր. եւ յաւագաց գումարեն ընդ նմա զիշխանն Գարդմանաց ձորոյն. եւ առնեն ընդ նոսա այլ տասն նախարարս. եւ յուղարկեցին զնա մեծաշուք պատուով յերկիրն Գամրաց ի մեծ քաղաքն Կեսարիա:

17:3 They entrusted him to the care of the prince of the mardpetutiwn, who was named Hayr. With him they mustered awags of the prince of Gardmanatsjor, and this party took along ten other naxarars. They accompanied Shahak with very grand honor to the great city of Caesarea in the country of Cappadocia:

17:4 Անդ ձեռնադրեն զՇահակն ի կաթողիկոսութիւն Հայոց մեծաց, եւ պատուով դառնան առ թագաւորն:
|
17:4 There they ordained Shahak as katoghikos of Greater Armenia, and they returned to the king with honor:
|
17:5 Եւ յաջորդեաց զտեղի հայրապետացն Շահակն. եւ սա նմանեաց վարուցն Փառենայ:
|
17:5 Thus did Shahak succeed to the position of the patriarchs. He resembled Parhen in his behavior:

17:6 Առաջնորդէր սա աշխարհի ըստ նմին օրինակի:
|
17:6 and directed the land after his example:
|
17:7 Բայց որոց հովուէրն` չեդեալք ունկն ինչ խրատու ճշմարտութեանն, այլ յանդիմանեալք` հոլանեալ գործէին զմեղս համարձակութեամբ, առանց խիթի յամենայն չարիս դարձեալք, թողեալք զտէր եւ զպատուիրանս նորա առ հասարակ թագաւորն եւ նախարարքն եւ իշխանքն:

17:7 However, the people he shepherded - generally the king, the naxarars and the princes - did not heed his truthful advice, and, even though reprimanded, they openly and boldly worked their sins, fearlessly accomplishing all sorts of evils, forgetting the Lord and His commandments:

17:8 Եւս չար քան զնոսա առ մարդիկ մարդկանն ամբարշտեալք, ի հնութիւն առաջին գործոցն հարցն իւրեանց դարձեալք, ի փոքրկանց մինչեւ ցմեծամեծս ի յայս էին հարեալք ի սոյն կանխեալք:

17:8 Others were even worse than they from the lowly to the grandees, impious toward others, and returned to the old former deeds of their fathers:

17:9 Վասն այսորիկ ամենայնի բարկացեալ տէր Աստուած ի վերայ նոցա` եթող ի ձեռանէ, արար զնոսա կոխան ի յարուցելոցն ի վերայ նոցա թշնամեաց նոցա:

17:9 As a result, the Lord God grew angry at them and abandoned them and permitted enemies to rise against and trample them:
|
17:10 Քանզի ի ժամանակաց ի թագաւորութենէն Տրդատայ, յորմէ հետէ զտէրն ճանաչելոյ` արար խաղաղութիւն, եւ լռեցոյց շուրջ զթշնամիս նոցա, զի ցածոյց տէր զմարտ պատերազմացն ի սահմանաց նոցա, եւ մինչեւ յայն ժամանակ ոչ ընդ ումեք բանք գոյին ամբոխի կամ խռովութեան, եւ ի մեծի խաղաղութեան էին բնակեալք:

17:10 From the time of the reign of Trdat, that is after Armenia recognized the Lord, God granted them peace and quieted the enemies who surrounded them; the Lord decreased battle in their boundaries, and until that time there was no turbulence or agitation with anyone. They had dwelled in great peace:

17:11 Ապա ի ժամանակին յայնմիկ յարոյց զօրացոյց զգրգռութիւնս սահմանակցօք շուրջ յամենայն կողմանս զթշնամիս նոցա. եւ ոչ մի ոք ի թագաւորացն Հայոց ոչ ոք գտանէր նոցա բարեկամ, այլ ամենեքեան թշնամիք:

17:11 But now in this period the Lord increased aggrevation from their enemies on all sides of their borders. And none of the kings of Armenia could find a friend among them, only enemies:
