23:0 Յաղագս յանդիմանութեանն սրբոյն Ներսէսի, զի հանապազ թշնամի էր թագաւորին Պապայ վասն մեղաց նորա:

23:0 Concerning the rebukes of saint Nerses who was ever an enemy of king Pap because of his sins:

23:1 Այլ սուրբն Ներսէս եպիսկոպոսապետն Հայոց հանապազօր ընդդիմացեալ թագաւորին Պապայ, կշտամբէր եւ յանդիմանէր մեծաւ վկայութեամբ յանդիմանութեամբ. եւ վասն չարեաց նորա բազմաց ոչ համարձակէր նմա զսեամս եկեղեցւոյն կոխել, եւ ոչ մտանել նմա ի ներքս:

23:1 But the blessed archbishop of Armenia, Nerses, was constantly reproaching, reprimanding and chiding king Pap greatly, and because of his wickedness, Nerses did not permit him to cross the threshold of the church, or to go inside:

23:2 Հանապազ կշտամբեալ յանդիմանէր եւ խրատէր, զի գտցէ զանձն իւր ի կորստենէ գործոց իւրոց. եւ հանապազ խօսէր ընդ նմա, զի փոյթ արասցէ ապաշխարութեան:

23:2 He was always reprimanding, reproaching and advising that the king find himself and save himself from the ruination of his deeds. He always spoke with him to make him think of atonement:

23:3 Դնէր առաջի նորա վկայութիւնս ի գրոց, ահ արկանելով յաւիտենական դատաստանացն պատժովք գալ ի զգաստութիւն եւ ի լաւանալ, եւ յառաջդիմութեան արդարութեան կարգացն եւ գործոցն սրբութեան փոյթ առնել:

23:3 He put before him testimonies from Scripture, terrifying him about the punishment of eternal judgements, so that he come to his senses, become good, and pursue the orders of justice and pure deeds:

23:4 Իսկ թագաւորն Պապ լսելոյ նմա ոչ լսէր` այլ եւ ընդդիմացեալ եւս մեծաւ թշնամանօք, եւ մահու սպասէր նմա, եւ կամէր սպանանել զնա յայտնի. բայց ի թագաւորէն Յունաց յայտնի եւ անարգել անգամ բանիւք չիշխէր, եւ ոչ սակաւ մի համարձակել ի նա թող, թէ մահու աղագաւ:

23:4 Now king Pap in no way heeded what Nerses said, but rather, he resisted him with great emnity and awaited his death. Indeed, he wanted to kill him openly, but because of the Byzantine emperor, he did not dare even to dishonor him openly, or to speak severely, to say nothing about killing him:

23:5 Նա եւ իւր իսկ աշխարհի մարդիկն եւ զօրքն ամենայն չառնուին յանձն զայսպիսի ինչ առնել. այր` զորմէ ամենայն մարդիկ աշխարհին Հայոց կախեալ կային զնմանէ վասն արդար գործոցն, սրբութեան գնացիցն յաշխարհի, խաղաղութեամբ մեծի առաջնորդութեանն. նա եւ վասն յայտնի նշանագործութեանն սքանչելեացն` զոր առնէր, իբրեւ յերկնաւոր հրեշտակ` այնպէս նայէին ամենայն մարդ:

23:5 Furthermore, the people of his own land and all the troops were totally against doing anything of this sort to a man whom all the people of the land of Armenia were indebted for his just deeds, clean behavior and peaceful leadership. And because of Nerses’ obvious miraculous deeds, everyone looked upon him as a heavenly angel:

23:6 Եւ թագաւորն ոխացեալ էր ընդ նմա, եւ խնդրէր սպանանել զնա. այլ յայտնի զայս եւ բանիւք ճառել ոչ իշխէր, թէ ոչ` իւր զօրքն սպանանէին զնա:

23:6 But the king was resentful of him and wanted to kill him, but did not even dare to speak of this lest his own troops kill him:
|
23:7 Զի այնպէս ամենայն մարդ ապաստանեալ էին յաղօթս նորա, եւ սիրէին զնա առ հասարակ մեծամեծք եւ փոքունք, պատուականք եւ անարգք, ազատք եւ շինականք միանգամայն:

23:7 For everyone so loved him and took refuge in his prayers, the grandees and the lowly, the venerable and the dishonored, the azats and the shinakans:
