5:0 Եւ արդ` յահագին այսպիսի մահուս զերծեալ անձինք շահաժողով ընչասիրացն եւ հասեալք եւեթ խնդրոյն տենչիցն, որում ուշ արարեալ բաղձան, մոռացեալ զվիշտսն` բերկրեալ աւգտիւքն զուարճանան:

 5:0 Now greedy lovers of material goods who have escaped from such a perilous death upon reaching their destination recall their hopes, forget their sorrow, and are delighted with their profits:

5:1 Իսկ ո՞րչափ եւս առաւել գտանիցին գանձուն յաւիտենից ժառանգաւորք` որք եւ զյաւրինուածս բանից ստուգապատում կարգեալ պատմագրեցին, չառնել մարդահաճութեան բանից յաւելուածս, ի ցրումն ոսկերաց, ըստ ասացածի սաղմոսերգին. այլ զգուշական երկիւղիւն ընդ բազմաց լայնածաւալս գիտնական բանի նաւեցին անվթար, ի սուրբ Հոգւոյն շնորհսն յուսով ապաւինեալք. ունելով փոխանակ փայտամած տախտակացն` զհիմն ուղղափառ հաւատոյ, եւ փոխանակ ի նմա բազմայարմար կազմութեանն հնարիցն` զերրեակ ինքնութեանն միութիւն զանբաժան սուրբ Երրորդութեանն:

 5:1 How much more treasure will be found by those inheritors of Eternity who have accurately and truthfully recorded history and have not added words to please anyone when, as the Psalmist says, “the bones are dispersed” (i.e, at the Judgement). Rather, (such historians) with watchful piety have navigated precisely over many profoundly learned words, taking refuge in hope of grace of the Holy Spirit. As a foundation they had orthodox faith, rather than wooden planks. Instead of possessing the appropriate apparatus (on a ship), they had the indivisible unity of the Holy Trinity:

5:2 Եւ զի նաւացն տախտակք առանց բազմաց սատարելոյ չհնարին լինել յանաւթ պիտանացու, քանի՞ եւս առաւել այսպիսի մեծ եւ հոգեւոր գործոյ ձեռնարկութիւն, ուր բազում կարեւոր պէտք էին առաքինի արանց աւգնականութեան:

 5:2 Since the planks of ships, without great labor do not make a seaworthy vessel, how much more is that the case in the undertaking of such a great spiritual work where the assistance of virtuous men is very important:

5:3 Զի ոչ փոքր ինչ կասկած է` աներկիւղ այսպէս ումեք տալ զանձն յայսպիսի վաստակս, ուր պիտոյ են յարմարութիւնք բանից, որոշեալ կարգադրութիւնք ըստ հրամանի կանոնեալ գիտութեանն, բերել պատկառելով ստուգագրութիւն անպարսաւ յականջս իմաստասէր լսողաց:

 5:3 For there is no small doubt involved for an individual to fearlessly give himself over to such labors (as writing a history) wherein the words must be appropriate and the arrangements determined according to an established scholarship and the accuracy able to stand reading to learned listeners without arousing their ridicule:

5:4 չյաւելուլ զանեղեալսն` յընդունայն աճմունս բանից. չնուազեցուցանել զեղեալսն եւ կարճակտուր պատմել բանիւք անփութութեամբ. այլ զբնաւն ողջախոհ զգուշութեամբ բերել ի յայտնութիւն:

 5:4 One must not add things which did not happen, with a vain inflation of words. Nor should (the historian) reduce (the importance of) events and carelessly relate things in an abbreviated manner. Rather everything should be revealed with sober caution:

5:5 Եւ վասն զի են աստ պէտք բազում երկիւղագին պատրաստութեան՝ արդ նպաստեալ իմում տկար խորհրդոյս` աղաչեմ, սատարեցէ՛ք ամենայն աղաւթասէր անձինք, ձերովք առ Աստուած խնդրուածովք աւգնականութեամբք:

 5:5 Because there is need here of much pious preparation, as a favor to my weak mind I beseech you, help me all you prayer-loving people to request aid, raising your hands to God:

5:6 Որովք արդարապատումն ճշգրտաբանեալ զեդեալ ի վեր քան զիս գործոյս հարկաւորութիւն` ընդ յորձանս մեծապատումն ծաւալացս նաւեալ մտաւոր ստուգաբանութեամբ` հասից բարեխաւսութեամբ սրբոց յանալէկոծ եւ յապահով նաւահանգիստն:

 5:6 This obligatory labor—to record accurately and truthfully—is beyond my abilities. But by God’s aid may I navigate through the great and deep rapids with learned accuracy and, with the intercession of the saints, may I reach the safe and untroubled harbor:

5:7 Աւրհնեալ է Աստուած:
