1:0 Սկիզբն առաջին գրոց պատմութեանն Հայոց, որում սկիզբն արարեալ պատմեաց ստուգիւ այրն երանելի Ագաթանգեղոս, սկսեալ ի մահուն Արտեւանայ յԱրտաշրէ յորդւոյ Սասանայ բռնաւոր Ստահրացւոյն. եւ զդարձ աշխարհիս Հայոց յանգիտութենէ կռապաշտութեան յաստուածգիտութեան ճշմարտութիւն ի ձեռն սրբոյ նահատակին Գրիգորիսի. որոյ անուն եւ զգիրսն անուանեալ կոչեն Գրիգորիսի:

 1:0 The first book of the history of the Armenians, which was accurately narrated by that venerable man Agat’angeghos, commenced with the death of Artewan caused by Artashir son of Sasan, tyrant of the Stahrac’ik’ (and narrated) the conversion of the land of Armenia from the ignorance of idol-worship to the truth of belief in God. (The conversion) was accomplished by the holy martyr Gregory, after whose name the book is called (the book) of Gregory:

1:1 Երկրորդ գրոց սկիզբն արարեալ պատմելոյ ի կարգէ առաջին գրոցն` զիրս բազմափոփոխս աշխարհիս Հայոց, զբարեաց եւ զչարեաց, զվարս եւ զգործս զարանց սրբոց եւ զպղծոց, զժամանակի պատերազմաց եւ զխաղաղութեան:

 1:1 The second book begins where the first book ends, relating the many changing events, good and bad, occurring in the land of Armenia; the actions and deeds of holy and impure men; and the times of war and peace:

1:2 Պատմեալ զայս ամենայն Փոստոս ոմն Բուզանդացի, մինչեւ ցթագաւորութիւնն Արշակայ (որդւոյ Պապայ, որդւոյ Արշակայ), որդւոյ Տիրանայ. առ որով թագաւորութեամբ բաժանեալ աշխարհս Հայոց` պատառեցաւ յերկուս ծուէնս, ըստ աւրինակի հնացեալ ձորձոյ:

 1:2 All of this, (continuing) to the reign of Tiran, son of Arshak (who was the son of Arshak’s son Pap) was recounted by a certain P’ostos Buzandac’i. During his reign the land of Armenia was divided, torn into two shreds like an old cloak:

1:3 Եւ աւարտեալ աստանաւր զբան պատմութեան իւրոյ` մնացուցեալ հանգոյց. զոր անուանեալ կոչեն զանուն գրոցն Հայոց պատմութիւն:

 1:3 That book which is called the History of Armenia ends with that event:

1:4 Երրորդ Պատմութիւնս այս ի կարգէ նորին գրոց շարագրեալ տկարութեանս մերում. յոր հարկաւորեալ հրամանաւ իշխանաց եւ բանիւ սուրբ վարդապետաց` տուաք զանձինս յայսպիսի գործ կարեւոր, չիշխեցեալ ընդդիմանալ:

 1:4 The third History in order is this one, composed in our infirmity. Compelled by the command of princes and the words of the blessed vardapets we committed ourselves to such an important task, not daring to refuse:

1:5 յիշելով ի Սուրբ Գրոց զսպառնալիսն անհնազանդից որդւոցն եւ զորս գրէ ներողութիւն հնազանդից եւ հաւանելոց. կարել մի ըստ միոջէ զիրս եւ զգործս, զբազմայեղանակ դիպմունս Հայաստան աշխարհիս, բաժանմանց յերկուս թագաւորութիւնս:

 1:5 For we recalled the threatening of the disobedient children in the holy Bible, and that the obedient and acquiescent are forgiven. One by one we arranged the events, deeds and diverse occurrences taking place in the land of Armenia (such as) the division (of Armenia between) two kingdoms:

1:6 եւ ի վիճակէ բաժնոյ անաւրինացն արանց քաջաց, ի տոհմէ նախարարացն Հայոց, տալ զանձինս անհամարս ի նահատակութիւնս ի վերայ ուխտին սրբոյ եկեղեցւոյ, եւ կիսոց համբերել կապանաց եւ բանդից վասն երկնաւոր յուսոյն բազմաժամանակ տեւողութեամբ:

 1:6 In the sector falling to the infidel (Iranians) were brave men from the line of the Armenian naxarars (lords) countless numbers of whom gave their lives in martyrdom for the covenant of the holy church, while others withstood shackles and prison for a long time out of divine expectation:

1:7 հեղուլ եւ քահանայից ընտրելոց Աստուծոյ եւ ճշմարտապէս հովուաց զարիւն ի պարանոցաց իւրեանց ի վերայ ընտրեալ բանաւոր հաւտին Քրիստոսի. եւ ոմանց յընկերակցաց նախարարացն եւ յայլ ազատ մարդկանէ` դառնալ յետս յուխտէ սրբութեանն եւ անշէջ յաւիտենից հրոյն լինել լուցկիք, պատրաստելոյն սատանայի եւ նորին արբանեկացն:

 1:7 We describe the beheading of God’s chosen priests and upright shepherds who shed their blood for the chosen rational flock of Christ; and those comrades of the naxarars and other azats who turned their backs on the covenant of holiness becoming tinder for the inextinguishable eternal fire which is awaiting Satan and his satellites:

1:8 Եւ գրել զայս ամենայն մինչեւ ցաւր սկզբան մարզպանութեանն Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնէից տեառն եւ մեծի զաւրավարին Հայոց եւ մարզպանի. եւ դադարեալ հանգուցից յայնմ տեղւոջ զբան վաստակոց պատմութեանցս այսոցիկ:

 1:8 We wrote about all the events until the start of the marzpanate of Armenia of Vahan, lord of the Mamikoneans, the great general and marzpan of Armenia. Our history ends there:
