35:0 Եւ հասեալ յԱղուանս երանելւոյ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վարդանայ տեառն Մամիկոնէից՝ ազդ եղեւ զաւրագլխացն Պարսից եկք Հայոց. որոց լուեալ` փութացան անցանել ընդ գետն մեծ, զոր Կուր գետն կոչեն, եւ ընդ առաջ եկին նոցա մինչեւ ի գեաւղն որ կոչի Խաղխաղ, յերկրին Աղուանից:

 35:0 When the venerable general of Armenia, Vardan, lord of the Mamikoneans, reached Aghbania (Aghuania), the Iranian military commanders were informed about the arrival of the Armenians. Upon hearing the news, (the Iranians) quickly crossed the great river, called the Kur, and advanced before them as far as the village named Xaghxagh in the country of Aghbania (Aghuania:

35:1 Եւ տեսեալ սրբոյ սպարապետին Հայոց Վարդանայ զանթիւ բազմութիւն գնդին Պարսից, եւ յինքեանս հայեցեալ, թէ յոյժ սակաւք են` սկսաւ խաւսել ընդ զաւրն Հայոց եւ յիշեցուցանել զբան սուրբ Հոգւոյն, զոր մայրն մարգարէին Սամուէլի ցնծութեամբ քաջալերեալ ի Քրիստոս` երգելով ասէր, թէ:

 35:1 The blessed sparapet of Armenia, Vardan, saw the limitless multitude of the Iranian brigade, and then saw how very few his own men were. He began to speak with (his men), joyously encouraging them in Christ and recalling for them the words of the holy Spirit which were sung by the prophet Samuel’s mother:

35:2 Մի՛ պարծեսցի հզաւրն ի զաւրութեան իւրում, եւ մի՛ պարծեսցի մեծն ի մեծութեան իւրում. այլ որ պարծելոցն իցէ` յԱստուած պարծեսցի:

 35:2 ’Let the mighty boast not of their might; nor the great one in his greatness, but let them glory in God. ’:

35:3 Քանզի ոչ ինչ է ի նուազս եւ ի բազումս յաղթութիւն եւ պարտումն, այլ յԱստուծոյ ակնարկութեանն հրամանի:

 35:3 For the matter of victory and defeat rests not in having few or many (soldiers) but with God’s will:

35:4 Եւ զայս ասացեալ երանելւոյ զաւրապետին Հայոց տեառնն Մամիկոնէից Վարդանայ, հայեցեալ եւ ի կամս ընկերակցաց իւրոց եւ ամենայն գնդին որ ընդ նոսա, թէ ո՛րպէս ջերմեռանդն սիրով զաւրացեալք էին եւ քաջալերեալք` խրախալից մտաւք փառաւորէր զՓրկիչն ամենեցուն զտէր Յիսուս Քրիստոս:

 35:4 When the venerable general of Armenia, Vardan, lord of the Mamikoneans, had said this he looked to see the will of his comrades and of all in the brigade with them. (When he saw) how much they had been strengthened and encouraged by fervent love, he joyfully glorified the lord Jesus Christ, the Savior of all:

35:5 Եւ հասեալք ի ժամ մարտին` հայեցեալ տեսանէին ըստ աւրինի կարգման նկատելոյ զգունդսն Պարսից:

 35:5 Before the battle began, (the Armenians) had observed the formation of the Iranian brigades:

35:6 Կարգէր եւ զիւր գունդն երանելի զաւրավարն Հայոց Վարդան, ըստ բաւականին այրուձիոյն իւրոյ, ընդդէմ նոցա. յերիս առաջս բաժանեալ` տայր ի ձեռս իւրաքանչիւր զաւրագլխի. որում աջոյ կողմանն կացուցանէր զաւրագլուխ զիշխանն Արշարունեաց զԱրշաւիր Կամսարականն, որ էր եւ փեսայ զաւրավարին Հայոց սրբոյն Վարդանայ տեառնն Մամիկոնէից, ունելով զդուստր նորա ի կնութեան:

 35:6 The venerable general of Armenia, Vardan, arranged his own brigade with competent cavalry, opposite them. He divided (the brigade) into three fronts, entrusting each (front) to a military commander. As military commander of the right front, he appointed the prince of Arsharunik’, Arshawir Kamsarakan (who was also the son-in-law of the blessed Vardan, general of Armenia and lord of the Mamikoneans, being married to his daughter:

35:7 եւ նիզակակից տայր նմա զՄուշ զաւագ սեպուհ` յազգէն Դիմաքսենից. եւ զահեակ կողմն տայր ի ձեռն Խորենայ Խորխոռունւոյ, եւ զաւրավիգն ընդ նմա կացուցանէր զՀմայեակ Դիմաքսեանն. եւ ինքն սուրբ զաւրավարն Հայոց Վարդան պատրաստէր զինքն միջոյ տեղւոյն յարձակման:

 35:7 As a comrade-in-arms (Vardan) gave (Arshawir) the senior sepuh, Mush, from the Dimak’sean azg. (Vardan) entrusted the left front to Xorhen Xorxorhuni and appointed Hmayeak Dimak’sean to support him. Vardan, the blessed general of Armenia, prepared to lead the central front in the attack:

35:8 Եւ այսպէս յաւրինեալ զճակատն եւ յԱստուծոյ խնամսն ապաւինեալք` յարձակեցան ի վերայ թշնամեացն:

 35:8 With the fronts thus deployed, and depending on God’s care, they attacked the enemy:

35:9 Յորս նախագոյն յառաջեալ ի տեղի մարտին` Կամսարականն Արշաւիր եւ Մուշ սեպուհն Դիմաքսենից, որք յանգիտութենէ տեղեացն` դիպեցան թանձրախոր սաստիկ մաւրից. Կամսարականն Արշաւիր եւ Մուշ ի յառաւելապէս դիմեցմանէն երիվարացն` անկեալք ի տիղմն հանդերձ երիվարաւքն խրէին. անդ կատարեալ պսակէր երանելի սեպուհն Դիմաքսենից Մուշ ի Նիխորականայ:

 35:9 Arshawir Kamsarakan and Mush, the Dimak’sean sepuh, were the first to reach the site of the battle. However, through unfamiliarity with the place, they fell into an extremely thick marsh. Because of the great rushing of their horses, Arshawir Kamsarakan and Mush fell into the mud together with the horses, and began to sink. The venerable Dimak’sean sepuh, Mush, was martyred there by Nixorakan:

35:10 Իսկ Կամսարականն Արշաւիր իջեալ յերիվարէն` ի հետիոտս սպանանէր զՎուրկն, զեղբայր Լփնաց թագաւորին, եւ իւր ի բաց ձգեալ զերիվարն ի սաստիկ խոր տղմոյն, ուր եւ մոյկ մի զերծեալ յոտանէն թաղեալ մնայր անդէն ի մաւրին. եւ ինքն Կամսարականն միամոյկ, տղմաթաթաւ, հանդերձ ամենայն զինուն, հանեալ զերիվարն ի ցամաք` անվեհեր քաջաբար նման թռչնոյ յերիվարն հեծանէր, եւ զարհուրեցուցեալ զթեւ իւրոյ կողման թշնամեացն` փախստական առնէր:

 35:10 But as for Arshawir Kamsarakan, he got down from his horse which was in deep mud, and on foot he slew Vurk, brother of the the Lp’nac’ king. One of (Arshawir’s) boots had come off his foot and was in the marsh. Then Kamsarakan, with only one boot on, and covered with mud, together with all (his) troops, removed the horse. Fearlessly, boldly, like a bird he mounted the horse, and put to flight the terrified enemies who were around him:

35:11 Եւ հայեցեալ տեսանէր զերանելի սպարապետն Հայոց զտէրն Մամիկոնէից Վարդան` հանդերձ ընկերակցաւքն իւրովք եւ ամենայն Հայոց գնդաւն, զի արարեալ փախստականս եւ նոցա` ածէին առաջի իւրեանց զբազմութիւն զաւրացն Պարսից. յորոց զկէսն սրովք իւրեանց դիաթաւալս յերկիր կործանէին եւ զկէսն գետավէժս արարեալ հեղձամղձուկս առնէին. եւ զայլսն ի նոցանէ դաշտացն եւ անտառախիտ մայրեացն ցրուեալս վատնէին:

 35:11 Looking around, (Arshawir) saw the venerable sparapet of Armenia, the lord of the Mamikoneans, Vardan, with his comrades and all of the Armenian brigade. They also were chasing a multitude of Iranian troops before them, as fugitives. Some (of the Iranians) fell to the ground, killed by the sword, while others fell into the river and drowned. Others yet scattered into the fields and dense forests:

35:12 Իսկ ոմանք յաւագորերոյ Պարսիցն ելեալք ի նաւս` յայնկոյս գետոյն մեծի փախստեայք լինել ճեպէին:

 35:12 Now some of the Iranian nobility had gotten into boats and were hurrying to flee to the other shore of the great (Kur) river:

35:13 Որ եւ զԿամսարականն Արշաւիր զիշխանն Արշարունեաց ստիպով փութացուցանէր երանելի զաւրավարն Հայոց Վարդան` զկնի փախստէից նաւացն նետաձիգ լինել, ի հաստատաձգութիւն եւ յանվրէպ դիպողութիւն առնն վստահեալ:

 35:13 But the venerable general of Armenia, Vardan, urgently urged Arshawir Kamsarakan, prince of Arsharunik’, to shoot arrows after the fleeing boats, since (Vardan) was confident of (Arshawir’s) firm and unswerving aim:

35:14 Իսկ Կամսարականն Արշաւիր, որպէս եւ միշտ կամակատար էր բանի սրբոյ զաւրավարին, վաղվաղակի հաւանեալ առ ի նմանէ հրամանին` զկնի նաւավարացն եւ փախստէիցն նետաձիգ լինէր:

 35:14 Arshawir the Kamsarakan (as he always implemented the words of the blessed general) immediately accepted the command from him, and began shooting at the navigators and the fugitives:

35:15 Եւ խոցեալ զնաւավարսն եւ զայլս բազումս ի նաւսն` կարէվէրս առնէր. որոց ընդ տապալել վիրաւորացն կործանէին նաւքն. եւ բազումք ի նաւավարացն եւ ի գլխաւորացն Պարսից գետասոյզ եղեալ կորնչէին:

 35:15 He mortally wounded the navigators and many other people on board. As the wounded fell, the ships were destroyed. Many of the navigators and the principal Iranians drowned in the river:

35:16 Եւ այսպէս շնորհեալ նոցա զյաղթութիւն վերին աւգնութեանն` դառնային ի բանակս իւրեանց, գոհանալով եւ աւրհնելով զԱստուած:

 35:16 So, aid from On High favored them with victory, and (Vardan’s men) returned to their camps thanking and blessing God:

35:17 Եւ դադարեալք անդէն ի տեղւոջն զաւրն զայն` ի վաղիւն չուեալք անցանէին ընդ գետն մեծ, անուանեալն Կուր գետ, եւ հասանէին ի պահակ որմոյն, որ է ընդ մէջ իշխանութեանն Աղուանից եւ Հոնաց. եւ գտեալ անդ զպահապանս պահակին եւ այլ զաւրականս պարսիկս բազումս, յորոց սուր ի վերայ եդեալ կոտորէին. եւ զպահակն յանձն առնէին թագաւորազնի միում Աղուանի, որում անուն էր Վահան, եւ զնոյն արձակէին դեսպան ի Հոնս եւ առ այլ ամրականս տեղեացն, զորս հաւանեցուսցէ միաբանել նոցա գնդաւ. որոց կամաւ եւ յաւժարութեամբ զաւգնելն յանձն առեալ` հաստատէին երդմամբ:

 35:17 Vardan’s troops remained there that day, and the next day crossed the great Kur River. They reached a guard wall, located between the principality of Aghbania (Aghuania) and the Huns [Honk’]. There they found sentry guards and many other Iranian troops, which they put to the sword. Then they entrusted the pass to a royal Aghbanian (Aghuan) named Vahan and sent this same man as an emissary to the Huns and to other strongholds to convince them to ally with them by sending a brigade, (These peoples) willingly and enthusiastically agreed to help, and confirmed it with an oath:
