62:0 Յաղագս ապստամբութեան Վասակայ եւ նուաճելոյ ընդ ձեռամբ Աշոտոյ:

 62:0 The Rebellion of Vasak, and the Subordination of the Latter by Ashot:

62:1 Բայց յետ այսորիկ ստուգեալ մերկացեալ երեւէր ապստամբութիւնն քանանիտ Գնթունւոյն Վասակայ, որում հաւատացեալ էր պահպանութիւն ամրոցին Շամշուլտէի. եւ ի դերեւ ելանէր նորայն խոկացեալ դաւաճանութիւն եւ թիկունս Աշոտոյ դարձուցանէր, որ Շահանշահն անուանէր. եւ անձնատուր ի Գուրգէն իշխան Վրաց լեալ՝ նմա զմեծ ամրոցն տալ խոստանայր, միայն թէ իւրում նահանգից տայցէ նմա այլ եւս ամրոցն Կրուստ քան զնա:

 62:1 Subsequently, Ashot uncovered the layers of a rebellion organized by the Canaanite Vasak Gnt’uni, who was set in charge of the fortress of Shamshulde, and the treason that he had devised came to naught. (Thereupon) he turned his back on Ashot, who was called shahanshah, and surrendered to prince Gurgen of Iberia with the promise of turning over to him the great fortress, provided that he would give him in return the stronghold of Krust in his own provinces:

62:2 Իսկ նա զհայցեալն ի Վասակայ վաղվաղակի կատարեալ եւ յետկար երդման կնքեալ տայ տանել նմա. որոյ հաւատարիմ բան ի յերդմանն եղեալ եւ ելեալ յամրոցէն չուեալ գնայ առ իշխանն Գուրգէն:

 62:2 Gurgen immediately complied with the wishes of Vasak, and sent him a solemn oath bearing his seal. Trusting his oath, Vasak abandoned the fortress and came to prince Gurgen:

62:3 Եւ վասն զի նախ քան զայս սպանաւ Աշոտ եղբայր Վասակայ ի սպայակոյտ զօրացն Վուրի աշխարհի. սակս այնորիկ ի ձեռն ձեռասուն կրտսերացն իւրոց հաւատայ զամրոցն ի չուելն իւրում:

 62:3 As Vasak’s brother Ashot had been killed by the armed forces of the province of Vur sometime prior to this, at the time of his departure, the prince entrusted the fortress to his young proteges:

62:4 Իսկ ի հանդիպիլ սորա իշխանին Գուրգենայ՝ իսկ եւ իսկ առեալ զնա ընդ կրունկն անդէն դարձուցանէ, ածելով ի դուռն ամրոցին առ ինքն տալ հայցէր:

 62:4 As soon as he had met prince Gurgen, the latter immediately made him turn back, and bringing him before the gates of the fortress, asked Vasak to turn it over to him:

62:5 Իսկ պահնակք ամրոցին ոչ կամեցան տալ նախ քան զառնուլն առ ինքեանս զՎասակ:

 62:5 However, the guards of the fortress refused to hand it over until he had restored Vasak to them:

62:6 Եւ իբրեւ մարտ ընդդէմ մարդկան ամրոցին իշխանն յարդարէր, վաղվաղակի ապա պահնակքն զգացուցին Շահանշահի. եւ նա աճապարեալ գայ յանբոկ գործոյն:

 62:6 While prince Gurgen made preparations for war against the men of the fortress, the guards immediately informed the shahanshah (of their condition), and the latter came in haste to settle the matter:

62:7 Եւ իբրեւ եկն ի տեղին՝ ի բաց քեցեալ եղեւ Գուրգէն ի դրանէ ամրոցին: Բայց պահնակքն եւ ոչ առ նա եւս կամեցան տալ զամրոցն՝ մինչ չեւ առ ինքեանս առեալ իցեն զՎասակ. իսկ նա պատնէշ պաշարման շուրջ զամրոցաւն եդեալ ի ժամ դիպող առնուլ սպասէր:

 62:7 Upon the arrival of Ashot at that place, Gurgen was driven away from the gates of the fortress. Yet, the guards were unwilling to turn over the fortress even to Ashot, before he had restored Vasak to them. At this point, the king laid siege to the fortress and waited for the opportune time:

62:8 Բայց Գուրգենի բազում երդմամբ զպահնակսն հաւանեցուցեալ վասն զՎասակ տալ ցնոսա՝ հրաւիրեցան ապա զօր առաքել, զի առ նոսա զամրոցն տայցեն:

 62:8 Meanwhile, Gurgen persuaded the guards with many oaths that he would return Vasak to them, and he was invited by them to send forces, so that they might surrender the fortress to the latter:

62:9 Իսկ իշխանին առաքեալ իբրեւ արս երեք հարիւր քաջակորովս աղեղնաւորս եւ վահանաւորս եւ սուսերաւորս, որք իբրեւ հասին զվայրս մտից գաղտնի դրանն բացեալ նոցա՝ առ հասարակ յամրոցն զեղան:

 62:9 The prince sent three hundred vigorous archers, peltasts and swordsmen, and as soon as they had arrived, the guards opened before them the door of the secret passageway and they all entered the fortress:

62:10 Իսկ մարդիկք ամրոցին՝ իմացեալ զմահառիթ նենգաւոր շունչ պատրանաց նոցա զոր հանդերձեալ էին կատարել, եւ ի բաց զներքնաբերդն լքեալ թողեալ, ի վերնաբերդ անդր համագունդ հորդան տային՝ սաստիկ մարտ ընդ զօրուն Գուրգենայ եդեալ, զի թերեւս արտաքս զնոսա կարասցեն կորզել:

 62:10 But when the men of the fortress learned of the guards’ deadly and insidious treachery, which they were about to commit, they abandoned the lower fortress and en masse rushed to the citadel, from where they fought fiercely against the forces of Gurgen in the hope that they might be able to drive them out:

62:11 Իսկ Աշոտոյ ոչ գիտելով զգործ իրին՝ այսպէս նմա կարծեցեալ թուէր, իբր թէ ընդ միմեանս մարդիկ ամրոցին ընդհարեալք մարտնչին: Եւ ապա ինքն իսկ արտաքուստ ի ներքս մարտ ընդ վերնաբերդն դնէր:

 62:11 But Ashot, being unaware of these circumstances, thought that the men of the fortress had turned against each other. Thereupon, even he aimed his attacks from below at the citadel:

62:12 Իսկ նոցա բացագանչութեամբ ձայն վերուստ ի վայր զգացուցանէին արքայի զառարկուածսն իրին, իբր թէ վասն նորա առ ի նոցանէն այն բան պատերազմի ընդ սպային Գուրգենայ իրագործի:

 62:12 However, the men of the fortress, raising their voices from above, made the king aware of the circumstances, namely that they were fighting against the forces of Gurgen seemingly on his (Ashot’s) behalf:

62:13 Իսկ նա ձայն առ նոսա արձակէր, զի «Թէ վասն իմ, ասէ՝ նկրտիք յայդպիսի մրցմունս, ասէ, ընդէ՞ր ոչ ինձ բացցի դուռնդ՝ զի ես մտից եւ դիւրեաւ վճարեցից զայդ հանդէս եւ բազմապարգեւ զձեզ արարից ի բոլոր բարութիւնս:

 62:13 Thereupon, Ashot cried out to them in a loud voice and note: “If you are struggling on my behalf, why don’t you open the gates before me, so that I may enter and easily putting an end to the contest give you many wonderful prizes:

62:14 Եւ ապա բացաւ նմա դուռն ամրոցին՝ եւ մտեալ իսկ եւ իսկ առ հասարակ զզօրն Գուրգենայ ձերբակալ առնէ: Եւ յետ փոքր ինչ աւուրց առ հասարակ զամենեսեան զնոսա անպիտանս առնէ յաչաց եւ յընչոց եւ յականջաց:

 62:14 Subsequently, the gates of the fortress were opened before him, and as soon as he had entered, he had all the forces of Gurgen taken into custody, and after a few days deprived all of them of their eyes, nose and ears:

62:15 Եւ այնուհետեւ ապա հիւսիսական ազգքն այնոքիկ ընդ ձեռամբ նորա նուաճեալ հնազանդէին ի ծառայութիւն, եւ ըստ աջողակ այցելութեանն Աստուծոյ երթալով երթայր եւ զօրանայր:

 62:15 Thereafter, these northern nations were subdued by Ashot and became his subjects. By means of the propitious Providence of God he gradually became more powerful:
