34:0 The enthronement of Varazdat over the country of Armenia after Pap:

34:1 Եւ եղեւ յետ մահուն Պապայ թագաւորին Հայոց, թագաւորեցոյց թագաւորն Յունաց զՎարազդատ ոմն ի նմին տոհմէն արշակունի ի վերայ աշխարհին Հայոց:

34:1 After the death of king Pap of Armenia, the Byzantine emperor made a certain Varazdat the king. He was from the same Arsacid tohm:

34:2 Եկն բազում շքով եմուտ յերկիրն Հայոց, եւ թագաւորեաց յերկրին Հայոց:
|
34:2 He came with much pomp, entered the country of Armenia, and ruled as king:
|
34:3 Եւ էր նա մանուկ յաւուրց, լի արութեամբ, կորովի ձեռօք, քաջ սրտիւ, եւ ի մտաց թեթեւ, մանգաբարոյ տղայահանճար մանկամիտ:

34:3 He was a youth, full of bravery, with powerful hands, a brave heart, but light-minded, with a child’s capricious cunning:
|
34:4 Բայց սակայն իբրեւ տեսին զնա, ժողովեցան առ նա ամենայն ազգք Հայոց մեծամեծք նախարարք, եւ կամեցեալ խնդացին զթագաւորելն նորա ի վերայ իւրեանց:

34:4 However, when all the azgs of Armenia’s grandees saw him, they gathered around him and were delighted that he would reign over them:

34:5 Եւ սպարապետն Հայոց Մուշեղ առաջնորդէր Հայոց. եւ զգուշանայր զսահմանօքն Հայոց, որպէս սովոր էր կարգել զաշխարհ մեծապէս. եւ խրատ բարեաց թագաւորին մանկանն Վարազդատայ մատուցանէր:

34:5 Mushegh, the sparapet of Armenia, was leading Armenia, protecting all the borders as was his custom, and he offered good advice to the young king Varazdat:

34:6 Եւ հոգայր հանապազ վասն թագաւորութեան աշխարհին Հայոց, եւ զիարդ կամ որպէս շէն լինել մարթասցէ. եւ հանապազ երկս արկանէր բարեխորհուրդն, զի հաստատուն կալ կարասցէ թագաւորութիւնն:

34:6 He was constantly concerned about the kingdom of the land of Armenia, how it might be kept (made) to flourish. He was always giving good advice so that the kingdom could remain secure:

34:7 Խորհէր եւս ընդ իշխանսն Յունաց, եւ նոքօք ընդ կայսերն, թէ պարտ է նոցա քաղաք մի շինել յերկրին Հայոց. ի մի մի գաւառսն, որ մին մի քաղաքս, որ երկուս երկուս ամուր պարսպաւորս զօրանիստս հաստատել ընդ ամենայն երկիրն Հայոց, մինչեւ ի Գանձակ սահման երկիրն, որ Պարսից կուսէ էր, Հայոց սահման էր. եւ զամենայն ազատսն Հայոց կայսերական թոշակօքն զինուորել. սոյնպէս եւ զօրաց երկրին Հայոց, զի այսպէս ամենայն զգուշութիւն լիցի առ ի թշնամեաց իւրեանց ի զօրացն Պարսից:

34:7 He also consulted with the Byzantine princes, and through them with the emperor that they should build “cities” in the country of Armenia. He suggested that secure, walled military bases be constructed one in every district with a city, and two where there were two cities throughout the entire country of Armenia, as far as Ganjak on the Iranian side, which was the border of Armenia. He proposed that all the Armenian azats should be provided with imperial stipends as well as the troops of the country of Armenia. Thus, there would be full attention directed at their enemy, the Iranian troops:

34:8 Եւ թագաւորն Յունաց յանձին ունէր մեծաւ խնդութեամբ առնել զայս. զի այսու ամենայնիւ աշխարհն հաստատուն լիցի եւ անշարժ ի նմանէն, զի մի՛ կարասցէ թագաւորն Պարսից յիւր վտարել զաշխարհն Հայոց:

34:8 The Byzantine emperor was overjoyed to do this, for in this manner the land would be totally secure and not move away from him, and the king of Iran would be unable to make the land of Armenia his own:
