39:0 Վասն զի մերձեալ էր այնուհետեւ ժամ ելից արեգական, եւ գունդն Պարսից ճակատել ի պատերազմն պատրաստէին եւ վառէին, եւ սուրբն Վարդան տէրն Մամիկոնէից բաժանեալ զիւր գունդն յերիս առաջս՝ միջոցի գնդին կարգէր գլխաւոր զտէրն Արծրունեաց, եւ զմարդպետն Միհրշապուհ` հանդերձ իշխանաւն Արշարունեաց Արշաւրաւ եւ երանելի արամբն Արտակաւ, իշխանաւն Մոկաց, եւ այլ աւագ նախարարաւքն:

 39:0 It was close to the hour of sunrise, and the Iranian brigade was arming and preparing to form into military fronts. The blessed Vardan, lord of the Mamikoneans, divided his brigade into three fronts. As head of the center wing he appointed the lord of Arcrunik’ and the mardpet Mihrshapuh together with the prince of Arsharunik’, Arshawir, and the venerable men of Artak, prince of Mokk’, and other senior naxarars:

39:1 եւ կողմանն աջոյ կարգէր աւագ` զերանելին Մախազ Խորէն, հանդերձ երանելեաւն Թաթլաւ, տեառն Վանանդայ, եւ սուրբ արամբն Ներսեհիւ Քաջբերունոյ եւ այլ աւագ նախարարաւքն. եւ ընդ ահեկէն կողմանէ պատրաստէր զինքն իւրով գնդովն եւ իշխանաւն Առաւեղենից Փափագաւ եւ այլ իշխան նախարարաւքն Հայոց. քանզի յայն կողմանէ առաւելապէս երեւէր ղակիշ գնդին Սիւնի զաւրուն եւ այլ զաւրաւոր արանց նշանք դրաւշիցն:

 39:1 As chief of the right wings he appointed the venerable Maxaz Xoren, with the venerable T’at’ul, lord of Vanand, the blessed Nerseh K’ajberunik’, and other senior naxarars. He readied the left wing himself, with his own brigade and with the prince of Arhawegheank’, P’ap’ag, and other princely naxarars of Armenia, for it was on that side that the encampment of the brigade of Siwnik’ troops, and the banners of other military men could be most clearly discerned:

39:2 Եւ զՀամազասպեան զիւր եղբայրն թողոյր վերջապահ, եւ պատուիրէր նմա` մի՛ զոք բռնադատել, այլ յորդորել միայն բանիւք` յաղագս իւրեանց փրկութեան:

 39:2 He left his own brother, Hamazaspean, as the rear guard and ordered him not to force anyone (to fight), but rather only to exhort them with words, for their own salvation:

39:3 Եւ այսպէս բաժանեալ յերիս առաջս զզաւրսն Հայոց սրբոյն Վարդանայ, եւ աւրհնեալք ի բերանոյ սուրբ քահանայիցն, աւրհնաբանելով զԱստուած` յարձակէին ի վերայ միմեանց երկոքին կողմանքն, Հայոց եւ Պարսից:

 39:3 Thus once the blessed Vardan had divided the Armenian troops into three fronts, and they were blessed by the holy priests, the two sides, Armenian and Iranian, attacked each other, the Armenians blessing God as they attacked:

39:4 Եւ ելեւելս արարեալ այնուհետեւ` յառաջէին արք ցանկացաւղք մարտիրոսութեան պսակին, եւ զզաւրսն Պարսից ի փախուստ դարձուցանէին զառաջինն:

 39:4 Vying with one another, those who sought the crown of martyrdom advanced and turned the first Iranian troops to flight:

39:5 Իսկ այլ բազմութիւն զաւրացն Հայոց, որք առ հարկի եւ ոչ կամաւ, մանաւանդ զի եւ զայլս յերկուանալոյ եւ դարձուցանելոյ յետս, որք երկնից բարութեանց ցանկացեալք էին՝ անդէն ի փախուստ դարձեալ կորնչէին զյաւիտենից կորուստն:

 39:5 But another multitude of Armenian troops, which had come under obligation and not voluntarily, though they had strived for goodness, nonetheless wavered and turned back, and suffered eternal loss in their flight:

39:6 Եւ տեսեալ զաւրացն Պարսից զգունդն Հայոց լքեալս եւ պարտասեալս առ ի կոտորել զազգն իւրեանց, հայեցեալ եւ յայն եւս, զի փախուցեալ երթային զաւրքն Հայոց` ի մէջ առեալ շուրջ զնաւքաւք պատեալ ծովանային. ուր եւ ցանկալի խնդրոյն դիպեալք` կատարէին այնոքիկ:

 39:6 When the Iranian troops saw how the Armenian brigade was abandoned and fatigued from killing their own people, and how they were fleeing, they went into their midst and surrounded them like a sea. Those (Armenians) who had been hoping to achieve (martyrdom) attained it there. But then the Iranian troops quickly went after the Armenian fugitives:

39:7 Ստիպով այնուհետեւ զհետ փախստէիցն Հայոց անցանէին զաւրքն Պարսից. որոց հասեալ` զոմանս կոտորէին, եւ զայլ ոմանս արգելեալ ի տեղի ինչ ամրոց արգելուին. որոց ոմանք հատեալ զնիզակափակ գիշերոյն պահապանացն եւ զբազումս ի նոցանէ կոտորեալ` գնացին ողջանդամք:

 39:7 They killed some of those (Armenians) whom they caught up with; others they restricted in some secure place (but some (of the fugitives) at night attacked and killed many of the armed guards, and got away unharmed:

39:8 Եւ այգոյն ի փախստէիցն Հայոց ձերբակալ արարեալ ածին ի բանակն եւ կոտորեցին սրով, եւ զայլս բազումս արկեալ զփղաւք սպանանէին. եւ մնացորդք փախստէիցն յայլ եւ այլ տեղիս Հայաստան աշխարհիս ցրուեցան:

 39:8 In the morning (the Iranians) took the arrested fugitive Armenians to camp. Some they put to the sword, many others they trampled under elephants. The remainder of the fugitives were dispersed to one or another place in the land of Armenia:

39:9 Բայց որ ի ժամուն երանելի եւ երկնաւոր կոչմանն եղեն արժանաւորք ընդ սրբոյն Վարդանայ եւ նահատակեցան` են այսոքիկ:

 39:9 Those who were worthy of the blessed, heavenly summons and were martyred there with the holy Vardan were as follows:

39:10 յազգէն Խորխոռունեաց` երանելին Խորէն. յազգէն Պալունեաց` երանելի սեպուհն Արտակ. յազգէն Գնդունեաց` երանելին Տաճատ. յազգէն Դիմաքսենից` երանելին Հմայեակ. յազգէն Քաջբերունեաց` երանելին Ներսէհ. յազգէն Գնունեաց` երանելին Վահան. յազգէն Ընծայնւոյ` երանելին Արսէն. յազգէն Սրուանձտայ` երանելին Գարեգին:

 39:10 from the Xorxorhunik’ azg, the blessed Xoren, from the Palunik’ azg, the blessed sepuh Artak, from the Gndunik’ azg, the blessed Tachat, from the Dimak’sean azg, the blessed Hmayeak, from the K’ajberunik’ azg, the blessed Nerseh, from the Gnunik’ azg, the blessed Vahan, from the Encaynik’ azg, the blessed Arsen, and from the Sruanjteayk’ azg, the blessed Garegin:

39:11 Եւ որպէս շատ խուզիւ եւ բազում քննութեամբ հարցեալ եւ ուսաք զնահատակելոցն թիւս, որք ի տեղւոջ պատերազմին պսակեցան ընդ աւագ նախարարսն` երկերիւր եաւթանասուն եւ վեց այր:

 39:11 As we discovered through much investigation and inquiry, the number of those martyred with the senior naxarars at the site of the battle [276] was:

39:12 Եւ զորս յամրոցացն իջուցեալ սպանին սրով եւ կամ փղաւք կոխեցին` եաւթն հարիւր եւ յիսուն այր. որք լինին միահամուռ հազար երեսուն եւ վեց այր. զորոց իւրաքանչիւր անուն վարձահատոյցն Քրիստոս գրեալ պահէ ի դպրութեան կենաց:

 39:12 Those who had been brought down from strongholds and killed with the sword or trampled by elephants added up to [750] men. Thus [1036] men died. Christ the requiter keeps all of these names written in the Book of Life:

39:13 Իսկ ի զաւրացն Պարսիցն, որք անկան ի պատերազմին յաւուրն յայնմիկ, զոր ստուգիւ համարեալ պատմեցին մեզ, տեղեկացեալք ի զաւրագլխացն Պարսից, երեք հազարք հինգ հարիւր քառասուն եւ չորս այր:

 39:13 As for the Iranian casualties, the figure [3,544] was related to us as accurate by people who had learned it from the Iranian military commanders:
