29:0 Յաղագս թագաւորելոյն Գագկայ, եւ որ ինչ յաւուրս նորա գործեցաւ:

 29:0 The Enthronement of Gagik and what happened in his time:

29:1 Եւ իսկ եւ իսկ զկնի Սմբատայ, ի նոյն աւր՝ թագաւորեաց Գագիկ եղբայր նորա ի [ՆԼԸ] թուականին, յաւուրս ձմերայնոյ, ի քաղաքին Անւոյ:

 29:1 On the very day of Smbat’s death, his brother Gagik reigned in the winter of [438=989] in the city of Ani:

29:2 Եւ տիրեաց նա յոլով բերդից եւ գաւառաց ի սահմանացն Վայոց ձորոյ եւ Խաչենոյ եւ Փառիսոսոյ՝ առաւել քան զեղբայր իւր. եւ ոչ ոք էր, որ զարհուրեցուցանէր զՀայաստանեայսս մինչեւ ցաւր գրելոյ իմոյ զբան յիշատակիս այսորիկ:

 29:2 He took possession of a greater number of fortresses and districts within Vayots Dzor, Xachen and Parisos than his brother. To the very day I wrote this Chronicle, no enemy disturbed the peace in Armenia:

29:3 Զի էր այր սրամիտ եւ վարժ ի պատերազմի եւ առատաձեռն ի բաշխելն. եւ զբաժ հարկաց յոլովից տեղեաց ազատեաց, եւ զկիւրակէիցն զցայգապաշտաւն սաղմոսերգութեամբ կատարէր:

 29:3 Gagik was a man of insight, knowledgeable in military affairs and generous in distributing favors. He eased taxes in many places. He (diligently attended) on Sunday mornings, during which (did not stop) singing psalms:

29:4 Աւա՜ղ միում չարին, որ արգել զբան գովեստի պատմութեան իմոյ:

 29:4 I cannot but regret one accident before which my word is withheld from praise of Gagik:

29:5 Այլ կին նորա Կատրամիդէ թագուհի բարեպաշտուհի եղեալ, որ էր դուստր Վասակայ՝ Սիւնեաց իշխանին, շինեաց զհիմնարկեալ եկեղեցին Սմբատայ ամենապայծառ վայելչութեամբ, բարձրաբերձ կամարաւք գմբէթաւորեալ խորան երկնանման, եւ զարդարեաց ի զարդ ծիրանեծաղիկ, ոսկեթել նկարագործ անկուածոց, արծաթեղէն եւ ոսկեղէն անաւթոց եւ բազմապայծառ լուսատու անաւթոց վայելչութեամբ, որովք ջահանայր ըստ երկնային կամարին կաթողիկէն սուրբ, որ ի քաղաքին Անւոյ:

 29:5 His wife, the pious queen Katramide, daughter of the Syunik prince Vasak, superbly completed (the construction) of the church begun by Smbat, with high arches and a dome in the form of a heavenly vault. She provided her with patterned gold-woven purple robes, various silver and gold shining vessels, under which the holy cathedral in the city of Ani burned like a vault of heaven:

29:6 Իսկ եղբաւրորդին նոցա՝ Սմբատայ եւ Գագկայ, Դաւիթ՝ որդի Գուրգենայ հանդերձ եղբարբն իւրով Սմբատաւ ունի զկողմանս Տաշրաց եւ զՎրաց դաշտի. զՇամշուլտեայ մեծ քաղաքանիստ դղեակն նիստ արքունական պատրաստեալ ինքեան՝ արագապէս տիրէ քաղաքին Դմանեաց, հնազանդեցուցանէ եւ զամիրայն Տփղեաց քաղաքաւն իւրով:

 29:6 The nephew (by brother) of Smbat and Gagik, David son of Gurgen with his brother Smbat owned (at that time) the countries of Tashirk and the Iberian plain, having the vast fortress of Samshvilde as his seat; he soon took possession of the city of Dmaneac; conquering the Amir of Tiflis with his city:

29:7 Եւ ի պատանեկութեան տիս պատանի եղեալ շքեղաշուք հասակաւ եւ վայելչութեամբ՝ իմաստնանայր հանճարով, հաճոյ Աստուծոյ եւ մարդկան, արիացեալ քաջութեամբ, քաջազաւր զաւրութեամբ յաղթող եղեալ ամենայն հակառակորդաց իւրոց:

 29:7 He was a handsome and slender young man, full of reason, pleasing to God, beloved by all, brave and courageous, triumphant over all his enemies:

29:8 Եւ ամիրայն Գանձակայ Փատլունն փութացաւ պատերազմել ընդ նմա՝ զի մի՜ զաւրացեալ նկուն արասցէ զնա:

 29:8 The Amir of Gandtsak P’atlun soon gathered to fight against him, fearing (the thought) that perhaps David, having strengthened himself, would subdue him too:

29:9 Իսկ Դաւիթ քաջապինդ սրտիւ պատերազմեալ՝ պարտեաց զնա, սրախողխող եւ գետավէժ արարեալ զզաւրս նորա. եւ ինքն Փալտուն մազապուր փախստեայ զերծանիւր:

 29:9 But David courageously opposed him and, having gained the upper hand, destroyed part of his army with a sword, and drowned the other in the river, while Patlun could hardly escape:

29:10 Յայնժամ մարզպանն Դեմետր, որ էր իշխան ի Գագ բերդին ի սահմանսն յայնոսիկ՝ կասկածեալ ի նմանէ՝ թողու զհաւատս հայրենի հայութեան եւ թիկունս աւգնականի զՎիրս արարեալ՝ ի նոցին կրկնամեռ լուանայ ջուր, եւ զորդին իւր՝ մամփուղ Տաշրաց կացուցանէր ի Հիւնէ վանս:

 29:10 Within those limits, having seceded (from Gagik), he betrayed his father’s Armenian faith and, having won the Iberians to his side, he crossed himself (in the faith of the latter) and appointed his son as Mampul of Tashirk in Hiwne-vank:

29:11 Իսկ Դաւիթ, գեղեցկածաղիկ մանուկն եւ նորատի արքայն՝ հանճարով հանէ զնա ի բերդէն Գագայ, առեալ ի նմանէ զամենայն ամրոցս նորա եւ զբոլոր հայրենիսն. որ թափառեալ շրջեալ՝ չարաչար մահուամբ սատակեցաւ. եւ բարձաւ տոհմն նորա:

 29:11 But the handsome, young and intelligent King David forced him out of the Gag fortification, taking away from him all the fortresses and his hereditary possessions; and he, forced to lead a wandering life, died a terrible death, and with him his generation ceased:

29:12 Եւ ծանեաւ Դեմետր, թէ որք հեռանան ի Տեառնէ՝ կորնչին սատակին եւ իսպառ մաշին:

 29:12 Then Demeter became convinced that those who move away from the Lord perish without leaving even a trace:
