10:0 The Death of Saint Aristakes and King Trdat:

10:1 Իսկ սուրբն Արիստակէս ժառանգ հայրենի աթոռոյն ամենայն իրօք զհետ երթայր սուրբ եւ արդար վաստակոց՝ ջանացեալ քրիստոսադիր կիտիւն նուաճել զհօտ իւր ի կամս Քրիստոսի, զոմանս հաւանողականաւ, իսկ զոմանս բռնաւորականաւ կարգաւ ջանայր պահել յակաստանի. եւ իբրեւ զսուր ինչ յազդեր միշտ ունելով զՀոգւոյն շարժմունս՝ յանդիմանէր զորս գտանէր ի չար գործս հակառակ Հոգւոյն:

10:1 The blessed Aristakes, the heir to the paternal throne, pursued in every way a holy and a righteous course by trying to subject his flock to the Will of Christ through the course set by Christ, and made an effort to keep them within the fold (of the church), some by their own will and others by force. He always held the power of the Holy Spirit girded like a sword upon his thigh and admonished those who were engaged in wicked acts against the Holy Spirit:

10:2 Ընդ որոց ապա եւ Արքեղաւոս ոմն կուսակալ Ծոփաց աշխարհին՝ կշտամբեալ ի նմանէ սակս չար գործոց իւրոց, ըստ դիպմանց իմն ճանապարհի ուրեմն աշխարհի Ծոփաց՝ ժպրհեալ ոխերիմ մտօք սպանանէ զսուրբն սրով, եւ փախստեայ ինքն գնացեալ յարեւմուտս Տօրոսի:

10:2 Among them was a certain Ark’eghayos, the prefect of the province of Cop’k’, who had been chided by Aristakes for his wicked deeds. The latter chanced upon the saint on a certain highway in the province of Cop’k’ and nursing rancor ventured to kill the blessed man by sword and fled to the region west of the Taurus:

10:3 Զոր ապա բարձեալ զնշխարեալ մարմինն նորուն աշակերտացն՝ տարեալ հանգուցին յԵկեղեաց գաւառն ի Թիլն աւանի:

10:3 Then the disciples of Aristakes carried his body and buried it in the village (awan) of T’il in the district of Ekeghik’:

10:4 Կացեալ ինքն յաթոռ հայրապետութեան ամս եօթն. ոչ թաղումն թերեւս զնորայն վարկեալ իմ՝ այլ վերափոխումն յաշխարհէ յայսմանէ յաշխարհն կենդանեաց. որ ոչ լսի համբաւ մահու, այլ մշտնջենազուարճ ուրախութիւն:

10:4 He had occupied the patriarchal see for a period of seven years. Perhaps I should not consider his internment a burial but an assumption from this world to that of the living where joyful bliss prevails eternally and one hears of no tidings of death:

10:5 Իսկ զկնի սորա անդրանիկ եղբայր սորուն Վրթանէս յաջորդէ զաթոռն նորուն՝ որպէս եւ հաճոյ թուեցաւ Հոգւոյն սրբոյ:

10:5 Aristakes was succeeded to the throne by his elder brother Vrt’anes, even as it pleased the Holy Spirit:

10:6 Բայց հոգեւոր ճառագայթն մեր սուրբն Գրիգոր ամս բազումս կեցեալ յայրին Մանեայ՝ վախճանի, անգիտաբար իմն թաղեալ ի հովուաց իբր գտեալ զնա ի կարգ իմն աղքատաց:

10:6 But our spiritual radiance Saint Grigor, having lived for many years in the cave of Mane, was deceased, and was unknowingly buried by shepherds who had found him in a state of poverty:
|
10:7 Իսկ ապա զկնի բազում ամաց գտանէ զսուրբ մարմին նորա Գառնիկ ոմն ճգնաւոր աստուածային իմն գոգցես տեսչութեամբ. եւ տարեալ դնէ զնա ի գեօղն Թորդան յիւր իսկ ի զբօսանոց պարտիզկանն:

10:7 Then, after many years, a certain hermit by the name of Garnik found his holy relics as if by divine ordinance and bringing them to the village of T’ordan buried them in the garden of Saint Grigor’s resort:

10:8 Զկնի ամաց ինչ ապա եւ սուրբն Տրդատ արքայ յանհամբուրից բարւոյ եւ յանհնազանդից ճարտարութեանն խարդաւանեալ խորամանկութեամբ՝ եւ տուեալ նմա յարբուցումն մահու. զոր տարեալ հանգուցանեն զմարմին նորա ի նմին աւանի ի նոյն պարտիզկան՝ մերձ եդեալ ի քնարանս սրբոյն Գրիգորի, որ համեմատ ընդ նմա իսկ զամենեսեան արտորոշէր ի ճանապարհաց չարաց՝ վերակացու երկրորդ լեալ լուսաւորութեանս մերում:

10:8 After a few years the blessed king Trdat was treacherously deceived by people of unpleasant and disobedient nature, and was given a deadly drink. His body was also buried in the same awan and the same garden near the grave of Saint Grigor, with whom he had equally struggled to turn away all the people from the ways of wickedness, thus becoming the second author of our enlightenment:

10:9 Իսկ մեծն Վրթանէս մինչդեռ տակաւին էր ի Տարօն գաւառին ի մատրանն Յովհաննու մկրտչի եւ Աթանագինեայ վկայի՝ մահ սպառնացեալ լինէր նմա ի ծածուկ իմն ի բնակչաց Սիմ լերինն. որք վասն ապիրատ եւ անազդակ չար գործոց միշտ յանդիմանեալ առ ի նմանէ լինէին:

10:9 But while Vrt’anes the Great was still in the district of Taron, in the chapel of John the Baptist and the martyr At’anagines, he was secretly threatened with death by the inhabitants of Mount Sim whom he constantly chastised for their unjust and perverse deeds:
|
10:10 Իսկ նորա զգացեալ ապա եւ զտեղի տուեալ չարին՝ գնայ փախստեայ ի գաւառն յԵկեղեաց, անդ կալեալ իւր կայան բնակութեան:

10:10 When he perceived this, he yielded to the wickedness, and escaped to the district of Ekeghik’, where he established his place of habitation:

10:11 Իսկ յետ մահուան սրբոյն Տրդատայ անօրէնն Սանատրուկ երկրորդ՝ ազգաւ յԱրշակունի տանէ, զոր կացուցեալ էր նահապետ Տրդատայ ի Փայտակարան քաղաքի, եւ յետ մահուան նորա ապստամբութեամբ բազմաւ թագ իւր կապեալ: Ըստ ամբարիշտ հրամանի նորա բարբարոս հիւսիսական ազգքն այնոքիկ զսքանչելի մանուկն Գրիգորիս, զոր եպիսկոպոս Աղուանից կացուցեալ էին ի տոհմէ սրբոյն Գրիգորի՝ սպանանեն ձիախրոխտ ընթադրութեամբ ի Վատնեան դաշտին. եւ տարեալ հանգուցանեն զսուրբ մարմին նորա ի գեօղն Ամարաս, որ ի Փոքր Սիւնիս:

10:11 After the death of Saint Trdat, the impious second Sanatruk of the Arshakuni house, whom Trdat had set up as nahapet in the city of P’aytakaran, rose in insurrection and crowned himself king. At his ungodly order the barbaric tribes of the north put the wonderful youth Grigoris, who had been appointed bishop of Albania from the house of Saint Grigor, to death in the Vatnean plain by means of the trampling hoofs of horses. They buried his saintly body in the village of Amaras in Lesser Siwnik’:
