28:0 Յաղագս խաղաղութեան երկրին Հայոց, եւ միաբանութեան նախարարացն:

 28:0 Peace in Armenia and the Unity Among the Naxarars:

28:1 Յայսմ ժամանակի Վասակ հայկազուն, որ Գաբուռն յորջորջէր՝ վասն զի փեսայացեալ էր Աշոտոյ իշխանաց իշխանի, իշխան ապա Սիւնեաց զնա կացուցանէր՝ յարքունուստ նմա առնելով պատիւ. որ բազում ճոխութեամբ վարեալ զիշխանական պետութիւն իւր, տիրելով միանգամայն Սիսական ազգին:

 28:1 At this time, Ashot raised his son-in-law Vasak Haykazun, surnamed Gaburn, as prince of Siwnik’, and obtained for him honor from the royal court. Ruling over his principality with great might, the latter likewise extended his sway over all the people of Sisakan:

28:2 Բայց զմեծ սպարապետութիւնն Հայոց տայ Աշոտ եղբօր իւրում Աբասայ, որ էր այր քաջանձնեայ եւ թիկնաւէտ, առոյգանձն եւ գեղեցիկ հասակաւ, կորովի եւ աջողակ ի պատերազմունս. որ եւ աջակցեալ իսկ եղբօր իւրում Աշոտոյ զամենեսեան հնազանդէր ընդ լծով ծառայութեան. ի բազում կողմանս բազում անգամ արութիւն ցուցեալ՝ եւ հռչակաւոր եւ հոյակապ ի մէջ բազմաց երեւեալ:

 28:2 On the other hand Ashot appointed to the office of the great sparapetut’iwn of Armenia his brother Abas, a brave man, sturdy, vigorous and handsome in stature, robust and skilled in warfare. He had assisted his brother Ashot in bringing everyone to submission, had displayed his valiance on many occasions and in numerous places, and was renowned as well as distinguished among the multitude:

28:3 Բայց յետ վախճանելոյ Աշոտոյ մեծի եւ հռչակաւորի իշխանի տանն Արծրունւոյ եւ դնելոյ զնա ի շիրիմս հարց իւրոց՝ պայազատէր զիշխանական պետութիւնն զայն Գրիգոր որդի նորա ընդ նորա, որ Դերենիկն անուանիւր:

 28:3 Now, after the death of Ashot, the great and illustrious prince of the Arcruni house, and his burial in the cemetery of his ancestors, his son Grigor, surnamed Derenik, succeeded to the principality in his father’s place:

28:4 Եւ էր նա այր սէգ եւ զգաստ եւ սօս ի գնացս ոտից, եւ զօրաւոր արդեամբք եւ բանիւ, եւ տնօրինէր միշտ յամենայն բարեձեւութիւնս բերիլ:

 28:4 He was a proud man, prudent, and haughty in his manner, powerful in word as well as deed, who always tried to conduct himself with all propriety:

28:5 Եւ վասն զի փեսայացեալ էր նա Աշոտոյ իշխանաց իշխանի, սակս այնորիկ հայրախնամ կամօք եւ խոհական սիրելութեամբ միշտ խրատ բարեաց նմա մատուցանէր. որ եւ ի սկզբան անդ ընկալեալ՝ հլու եւ զգօն մտօք հաւանէր ընդունիլ եւ յոտին զբոլոր թշնամիս ի սադրելոյ նորա կացուցանէր:

 28:5 And as he was the son-in-law of Ashot, the presiding prince, the latter with paternal care and thoughtful love always gave him sound advice. At first he was willing to accept this instruction obediently and wisely and through it he brought all of his enemies to submission:

28:6 եւ շինութեան եւ խաղաղութեան պարապեալ՝ յապահովս ի բնակութեան իւրեանց պատրաստէր զհայրենի տէրութիւնն իւր ի բոլոր հինից:

 28:6 He busied himself peacefully with building and made his ancestral domain a safe place, secure from all plundering troops, in which to live:

28:7 Բայց յետոյ ի կամս անձին զինչպիտութեան բերեալ՝ ոչ անսայր բանի խրատու աներոյ իւրոյ որպէս յերէկն եւ յեռանդն, եւ չլինէր նմա այն յաջողումն ինչ ի բարութիւնս:

 28:7 Subsequently, however, he conducted himself in accordance with his own caprices, and did not heed the advice of his father-in-law as he had done earlier; thus he could not achieve his former success:

28:8 Բայց մեծ իշխանն Սիւնեաց Վասակ, որ ըստ փաղաքշականին Իշխանիկ անուանիւր՝ յաւէտ իմաստութեամբ եւ հեզահամբոյր հանդարտութեամբ եւ հաւանութեամբ մեծաւ հնազանդէր Աշոտոյ իշխանին իշխանաց, եւ խրատու նորա զունկն մատուցանէր խնամով՝ իբրեւ զօրէնս միշտ ի սրտի իւրում պահելով: Եւ ի ձեռն այնորիկ յաւէտ իմն ընդարձակագոյն զտուն տէրութեան իւրոյ յարդարէր ի բոլոր բարեմասն լրութիւնս. եւ կայր բազում խաղաղութեամբ ըստ ամենայն հանդիսի բարեպաշտութեան:

 28:8 But the great prince of Siwnik’ Vasak, flatteringly surnamed ishxanik, yielded to the presiding prince Ashot with great wisdom, meekness and temperance, and heeding his words of advice with care, kept them in his mind as precepts, whereby he brought a greater degree of prosperity on his domain and lived in peace in accordance with all the manifestations of piety:

28:9 Բայց միւս եւս իշխանն Սիսական՝ Վասակ, որ Գաբուռն փաղաքշաբար անուանիւր՝ յայսմ ժամանակի վախճանեալ եւ եդեալ ի շիրիմս հարց իւրոց, պայազատէ զհայրենի տէրութիւնն Գրիգոր որդի նորա ընդ նորա, որ Սուփանն յորջորջէր:

 28:9 At this time, the other prince of Sisakan, that is to say Vasak, flatteringly surnamed Gaburn, died and was buried in the cemetery of his ancestors. His son Grigor, surnamed Sup’an, succeeded to his father’s realm:

28:10 Սա իմաստութեամբ եւ աջողաձեռնութեամբ եւ շինութեամբ բազմաւ անդր եւս քան զպայմանն լնոյր զչափ հարց իւրոց:

 28:10 He surpassed his ancestors in wisdom, good fortune and erection of buildings:

28:11 Բայց առաւել յեկեղեցեաց Քրիստոսի ի շինութիւն եւ ի նորոգութիւն զինքն վերաբերէր:

 28:11 and devoted himself especially to the construction and renovation of the churches of Christ:

28:12 Իսկ մեծ եւ սուրբ հայրապետն Զաքարիայ իբրեւ եկաց յառաջնորդութեան անդ իբրեւ ամս քսաներկու՝ վախճանեալ դնի ի քնարանի հարցն սրբոց:

 28:12 Now the great and blessed patriarch Zak’aria, reaching the twenty second year of his prelacy, died and was buried in the cemetery of the holy fathers:

28:13 Ապա իշխանն իշխանաց Աշոտ՝ ընտրեալ զայր մի պատուական յընտանեաց տանն կաթողիկոսարանին, Գէորգ անուն՝ որ էր ի գիւղաքաղաքէն Գառնւոյ, հրամայէ ձեռնադրել զնա յառաջնորդութիւն տանս Թորգոմայ:

 28:13 Then, the presiding prince Ashot chose an honorable man from the household of the katholikos Georg by name, from the komopolis of Garni, and ordered his consecration as prelate of the house of Togarmah:
