29:0 Յաղագս թագաւորելոյ Աշոտոյ իշխանաց իշխանին, եւ սպանման Գրիգորի Արծրունւոյ:

 29:0 The Rule of the Presiding Prince Ashot as King, and the Murder of Grigor Arcruni:

29:1 Այլ ինձ աստանօր ոչ արդեօք այլ ինչ է բանս սիրելի քան թէ դեգերիլ ի բանս գովեստից, որ վասն Աշոտոյ իշխանաց իշխանին են հետեւմունք:

 29:1 Nothing now could indeed please me more than (the task of) concentrating on words of praise about the presiding prince Ashot that comprise a sequel:

29:2 Վասն զի ի տիս հասեալ միջակութեան՝ քաջահասակ էր նա եւ անձնեայ եւ թիկնաւէտ եւ զուարթերես եւ մրայօն նկարէն իմն, եւ նիշ արեան յաչսն ունելով՝ որպէս զյակինթ կարմիր ի մէջ մարգարտի ծագեալ, եւ վայելչացեալ գեղեցկութեանն ալեօք:

 29:2 Having reached middle age, he was of great stature, tall, robust, with a cheerful countenance surmounted by dark eyebrows. He had a speckle of blood in his eye, a red ruby glowing in the midst of pearls, and his splendid white hair gave him distinction:

29:3 մեծիմաստ եւ քաղցրաբան, եւ առ կերակուրս խրախճանաց պարկեշտ. ոչ խանդացեալ նորա ընդ լաւագոյնսն եւ ոչ արհամարհեալ զնուաստագոյնսն, այլ հասարակաց ի վերայ տարածէր զզգեստ խնամոց իւրոց: Եւ լծակօք իմն կշռէր նախ զիւր եւ ապա զամենեցուն կենցաղս. միանգամայն իսկ ասել, եթէ որ ինչ մարդկութեանս է պիտանի ոչ ինչ կասեցուցանէր:

 29:3 He was wise and soft-spoken, temperate at banquets. He neither would envy his betters nor would he look down upon those who were humble. He spread his care like a mantle over everyone. He held the scales evenly and first examined his own conduct before all others’. In short, he hindered nothing that was of benefit to humanity:

29:4 Զայսպիսիս ապա տեսեալ քաջատոհմիկ պերճութիւն իշխանացն եւ նախարարացն Հայոց՝ խորհուրդ միաբանական առեալ՝ թագաւորեցուցանել զնա ի վերայ ինքեանց, զեկուցանեն ամիրապետին ի ձեռն ոստիկանին Յիսէի՝ որդւոյն Շեխայ:

 29:4 In view of the nobility of his family, the princes and naxarars of Armenia unanimously resolved to raise him up as king over themselves, and informed the caliph through the governor ’Isa son of Shaikh:

29:5 Զոր եւ սիրալիր սրտիւ զարժանահայց խնդիրն ընկալեալ՝ առաքէ ապա Աշոտոյ թագ թագաւորական. զոր եւ բերեալ իսկ ոստիկանին Յիսէի՝ ընդ նմին եւ այլ եւս զգեստս թագաւորականս, եւ պարգեւս եւ պատիւս, եւ երիվարս օդապարիկս զինուք եւ զարդուք մատուցանէին առաջի նորա:

 29:5 Receiving this fitting request with friendly disposition, the caliph sent to Ashot a royal crown, which the governor ’Isa brought and presented together with royal robes, gifts, honors, swift horses, weapons and ornaments:

29:6 Կոչեցաւ ապա եւ անդ մեծ հայրապետն Գէորգ եւ զհոգեւոր օրհնութեանցն գովութիւնս աստուածայինս ի վերայ կատարեալ փոխանակ օծման սրուակի իւղոյն՝ պսակեն զնա թագաւոր ի վերայ Ասքանազեան ազին:

 29:6 Then they summoned the great patriarch Georg, who conferred on him the divine benediction of spiritual blessings instead of the anointment with the chrism, and crowned him king over the people of Ashkenaz:

29:7 Եւ այնուհետեւ բազում եւ երեւելի կարգս յարդարէր աշխարհի տէրութեան իւրոյ, յօրինուածս տանց, ազգաց, քաղաքաց, շինից, դաստակերտաց, եւ հարթ հաւասար ըստ իւրաքանչիւրոցն կատարէր կարգս լեռնականաց եւ ջերմահովիտ բարեխառն դաշտականաց:

 29:7 Subsequently, Ashot introduced many significant regulations into his realm; he made arrangements concerning the feudal houses, the cities, the shens and the dastakerts. The laws passed by him applied equally to mountain dwellers and to the inhabitants of temperately warm valleys:

29:8 եւ զամենայն տափարակ տեղիս՝ ագարակս եւ գոմս դնէր. եւ զմարմանդս յայգիս եւ ի բուրաստանս զարդարէր. եւ զամենայն որ ինչ օրէն է թագաւորութեան եւ որ ինչ ի թագաւորութեան եւ որ շուրջ զթագաւորութեամբ ոչինչ իւիք կասեցուցանէր. եւ գրեթէ հարստագոյն եւ խոհեմագոյն քան զամենայն թագաւորութիւնս գտանէր:

 29:8 He turned all level lands into farms (agarak), and folds (gom), and enriched the pastures with vineyards and orchards. In no way did he deny his kingdom the needed rules and ordinations, and for the most part, he was more powerful and wiser than all the other kings:

29:9 Եւ այսպէս ի նորոգատուր թագաւորութեանն բարձրացուցանէր զազգս Թորգոմեան:

 29:9 Thus, he exalted (the name of) the people of Togarmah in his newly acquired kingdom:

29:10 Եւ ապա ձեռն զհիւսիսական կողմամբք արկեալ ի ծործորս մեծի լերինն Կովկասու, որ ի հովիտն եւ ի ձորս երկայնագոգս բնակեալք էին ազգք ընդ իւրեաւ հնազանդեցուցանէր:

 29:10 Then, he laid his hand on the northern regions, where he subordinated peoples who dwelt in the valleys and far-reaching dales of the Caucasus:

29:11 այլ եւ զաղխատրոյզ բնակիչսն Գուգարաց եւ զելուզակուտ մարդիկ Ուտի գաւառի առ հասարակ ընդ ձեռամբ նուաճէր՝ ի բաց ի նոցանէ հերքելով զաւազակութիւն մարդադաւութեան, եւ իբրեւ օրինաւորս եւ հլուս զամենեսեան կազմէր, եւ առաջնորդս եւ իշխանս նոցա կացուցանէր:

 29:11 He also brought into submission the barbarous peoples of Gugark’ and the marauders of the province (gawar) of Uti. Banishing from their midst brigandage and murder, he turned all of them into obedient, law-abiding people, and set rulers as well as princes over them:

29:12 Այլ եւ զթագաւորն Եգերացւոց ի սէր միաբանութեան ընդ իւր կապակցեալ՝ այնպէս նմա այցելէր, մինչ զի անընդհատ յորդիութեան սակի գոլով՝ մտերմաբար պարտավճար միշտ նմա ի ծառայութիւն բերէր:

 29:12 Furthermore, he made an alliance with and paid a visit to the king of Egrisi, who as a constant vassal of Ashot faithfully rendered him service by an obligatory tribute (partavchar:

29:13 Այլ եւ մեծ Կայսրն Յունաց՝ Բարսեղ, ոչ փոքր ինչ պայման խաղաղութեան եւ նուաճութեան եւ սիրոյ հաստատէր ընդ արքային մերոյ Աշոտոյ՝ որդի սիրելի զնա անուանելով եւ հաղորդակից կացուցանելով յամենայն թագաւորութիւնս տէրութեան իւրոյ:

 29:13 Basil, the great emperor of the Greeks, also offered terms of peace—which were in no way trivial, harmony and friendship to our king Ashot, whom he addressed as ’beloved son’, and he communicated this to all the kingdoms in his dominion:

29:14 Եւ այսպէս ապա լցեալ եւ կատարեալ լինէր բովանդակաբար բոլոր կարգս առաքինի գործոց ըստ կարգի այնց պարծանաց, զորս ընկալեալն էր:

 29:14 Thus, Ashot completed and perfected the chain of his virtuous deeds in accordance with the glorification that he had received:

29:15 Զայսու ժամանակաւ մեծ իշխանն տանն Արծրունի՝ Գրիգոր, որ Դերենիկն յորջորջիւր՝ ձեռն զգաւառօքն եւ զքաղաքօքն արկեալ զկողմամբք Հերայ եւ Զարաւանդայ՝ ի հնազանդութիւն ընդ իւրեաւ զկողմանսն զայնոսիկ նուաճէր:

 29:15 About this time, the great prince of the Arcruni house, Grigor, surnamed Derenik, laid hands on the districts and cities of the region of Her and Zarawand, and subjected these places:

29:16 Իսկ Իսմայէլեան ազգին գլխաւորք, որք բնականաբար սեպհականեալ էին զսահմանս քաղաքացն եւ գաւառացն այնոցիկ, թէպէտ եւ շրթամբք զհարթ հաւասարութիւն եւ զհնազանդութիւն առ իշխանն Գրիգոր ցուցանէին եւ յայտ առնէին. սակայն սիրտք իւրեանց հեռացեալք մեկուսի էին ի նմանէ:

 29:16 And although leaders of the Ishmaelite people, who laid claim through habitancy to the possession of the territories of these cities and districts, showed themselves in agreement with, and submissive to prince Grigor, yet, in their hearts they were at variance with him:

29:17 Ապա յաւուրս աշնայնոյն մեծ իշխանն չուէր գնայր զկողմամբք Հերայ ի հանդիպումն գլխաւորի քաղաքին. եւ իբրեւ ել առ իշխանն՝ դաւաճանութեամբ ի ծածուկ զօրս ղօղեալ թագուցանէր ի խոխոմս յայգեստանին:

 29:17 Then during the fall, when the great prince set out for the region of Her in order to meet the ruler of the city, the latter, on his way to meet the prince, treacherously concealed troops in a ravine in the vineyard:

29:18 Եւ ի հանդիպիլ իշխանին՝ յանկարծօրէն յարուցեալ զօրքն Իսմայէլեան ի տեղւոջէ իւրեանց, ի թիկանց կուսէ իշխանին ի վերայ զեղեալ հեղան. եւ առ ժամայն հարեալ զիշխանն սրով սուսերի յերկիր կործանեցին:

 29:18 Upon the arrival of the prince, the Ishamelite forces suddenly came out of their hideout, and attacking the prince from the rear, instantly struck him down with sword, and threw him to the ground:

29:19 Եւ այնպէս խարդաւանել յանօրինաց՝ բարձաւ մեռեալ. եւ տարեալ թաղեցաւ ի շիրիմս հարց իւրոց:

 29:19 Betrayed by the infidels in this manner, he met his death, and was carried away to be buried in the cemetery of his ancestors:

29:20 Իսկ զկնի նորա պայազատէ զիշխանութիւնն մեծ՝ Աշոտ որդի իւր, թոռն արքային Աշոտոյ:

 29:20 His son Ashot, the grandson of king Ashot, succeeded to his great domain:

29:21 Բայց զմնացորդս բանիցս այսոցիկ՝ զօրութեանց եւ քաջութեանց եւ մրցանաց եւ պատերազմաց եւ բազում բարի օճանից աւանիկ գրեալ ի գիրս Պատմութեանց Շապհոյ Բագրատունւոյ՝ բաւական քեզ կացուցանել տեղեկագոյն առնն բարեբաստութեան:

 29:21 But the material that I have left out of my narrative, that is to say, the account of the valiant acts, struggles and wars of Ashot, is to be found in the History of Shapuh Bagratuni, which will give you sufficient details on the good fortune of this man:

29:22 Իսկ Վասակ Սիսական իշխանն, որ ըստ փաղաքշականին Իշխանիկն անուանիւր, աստուածամերձ պողոտայիւ եւ բարեպաշտագոյն հանդիսիւ քաղաքավարեալ զկեանս իւր՝ վախճանի, եդեալ ի շիրիմս հարց իւրոց:

 29:22 As for Vasak prince of Sisakan flatteringly surnamed ishxanik, he died after living a godly and pious life, and was buried in the cemetery of his ancestors:

29:23 Եւ ապա եղբայր նորուն Աշոտ ընդ նմա պայազատէր զիշխանութիւնն զայն. այլ հեզահամբոյր եւ խաղաղասէր, բարեպաշտօն եւ երկիւղած յԱստուծոյ եւ ամենայնիւ յամենայն ի շինութեան զինքն պարապեցուցեալ հայրենի տէրութեան իւրոյ:

 29:23 Then, his brother Ashot succeeded to his realm. He was an affable, peaceloving, pious and God-fearing man, who occupied himself entirely with the welfare of his paternal domain:
