9:1 Եւ սաստկացեալ թագաւորին՝ ետ պնդել զոտս նորա ի հրապոյրս տկաց, եւ կախել զնա գլխիվայր. եւ ետ դնել ձագար ի նստոյ տեղւոջ նորա, եւ արկանել ջուր տկաւ յորովայն նորա:

 9:1 The king, even more incensed, ordered his feet to be bound with cords of wineskins and him to be hung upside down. And he had a funnel placed in his bottom and had water poured from a wine-skin into his belly:

9:2 Եւ ետ հրաման, եւ իջուցին յայնմանէ. եւ սկսաւ հարցանել զնա եւ ասէ. «Առնե՞ս զկամս իմ, թէ ոչ պաշտես զդիսն, որ են ամենայն երկրի կեանք եւ շինութիւն:

 9:2 Then he gave a command and they brought him down. And he began to question him, saying: “Will you do my desire, will you not serve the gods who are the life and prosperity of the whole earth:

9:3 Ետ պատասխանի Գրիգորիոս եւ ասէ. «Ես Տեառն Աստուծոյ իմոյ երկիր պագանեմ, զի նա է արարիչ եւ կեանք եւ շինութիւն:

 9:3 Gregory replied and note: “I worship the Lord my God, for he is creator and life and prosperity:

9:4 եւ զՈրդին հաստիչ եւ համազաւր եւ համագործ, եւ զՀոգի նորին, որ ելից իմաստութեամբ զամենայն տիեզերս:

 9:4 and the Son, fashioner and equal in power and deed; and his Spirit, who filled the whole universe with wisdom:

9:5 Այլ զկուռս կռեալս, կոփեալս, քերեալս եւ արարեալս՝ ոչ կալայ երբեք առ աստուածս, եւ մի՛ լիցի այլ ունել՝ մինչեւ իցէ շունչ իմ ի մարմնի իմում:

 9:5 But the hammered idols, sculpted and polished and worked [cf. Wis. 13.11; Is. 41.7], I never held to be gods - and may I never so hold any other so long as my breath is in my body:

9:6 Ետ պատասխանի թագաւորն եւ ասէ. «Փոխանակ զի իշխեաց ասել կռեալս եւ քերեալս դիցն՝ պահանջեսցի դա ընդ այդորիկ:

 9:6 The king replied and note: “In return for daring to call the gods hammered and polished, let him pay retribution for that:

9:7 Եւ ետ հրաման քերել զկողս նորա երկաթի քերչաւք, մինչեւ ոռոգան վայրքն ամենայն յարենէ նորա:

 9:7 He ordered his flanks to be torn with iron scrapers until all the ground was running with his blood:

9:8 Եւ սկսաւ ասել ցնա. «Արդ արասցե՞ս զկամս իմ, Գրիգորիոս, որ յայդպիսի տանջանս մատնեցար:

 9:8 And he began to say to him: “So will you do my desire, Gregory, now that you have been given over to such torments:

9:9 Ասէ ցնա. «Ինձ լիցի պահել զուխտ աստուածպաշտութեան, զոր ուսայ ի մանկութենէ իմմէ, որ կարողն է փրկել զիս յամենայն նեղութենէ, եւ զքեզ արկանել ի տանջանս՝ որ ոչ ճանաչես զնա, եւ դարձեալ զայլս եւս զարհուրեցուցանել կամիս եւ քակել ի պաշտմանէ սիրոյ նորա:

 9:9 He replied: “May I keep the covenant of piety which I learned from my youth [cf. II Tim. 3.15]; God can save me from every tribulation [cf. I Tim. 4.8], and cast into torment you who do not know him and wish to frighten others still more and separate them from the service of his love:

9:10 Ետ պատասխանի թագաւորն եւ ասէ. «Ո՞ւր է Աստուած քո, որ փրկէն զքեզ ի ձեռաց իմոց, եւ կամ դատի, որպէս ասացեր, դատաստանաւք իւրովք:

 9:10 The king replied and note: “Where is your God, who will save you from my hands, or is judged, as you said, by his own judgments:

9:11 Եւ ետ հրաման, եւ բերին տատասկ երկաթի բազում սակառեաւք, եւ արկին ի վերայ գետնի թանձր. եւ մերկացուցին զԳրիգորիոս, եւ արկին ի վերայ տատասկին մերկ. եւ ծակոտեալ լինէին մարմինք նորա առ հասարակ:

 9:11 He gave a command and they brought iron “thistles” in many baskets and cast them thickly on the ground. They stripped Gregory and threw him naked onto the “thistles.” His flesh was pierced all over:

9:12 եւ քարշեցին եւ թաղեցին զնա ի տատասկին. եւ շրջշրջէին զնա անդէն, մինչեւ առ հասարակ ծակոտեցան մանրիկ մարմինք նորա, մինչ զի ոչ մնաց ի նմա տեղի ողջ:

 9:12 They dragged and buried and rolled him in the “thistles” until every part of his body was torn, leaving no place intact:

9:13 Եւ ի միւսում աւուրն ածին զնա առաջի նորա:

 9:13 The next day they brought him before the king:

9:14 Սկսաւ հարցանել զնա եւ ասէ. «Զարմացեալ զարմացեալ եմ, եւ կարի քաջ. զիա՛րդ կեաս դու կենդանի. եւ ոչ ինչ գրեցեր դու զցաւսդ, եւ խաւսիս եւս. զի արժան էր, թէ վաղուց էիր դու վախճանեալ ի տանջանաց այտի:

 9:14 He began to question him, saying: “I am very greatly amazed how you are able to stay alive. You have counted your pains as nothing and you still speak. For long before now you should have died from such torments:

9:15 Ետ պատասխանի Գրիգորիոս եւ ասէ. «Ոչ է իմ ժուժկալութիւն տոկալոյդ՝ իմով զաւրութեամբ, այլ ուժով շնորհի Տեառն իմոյ, եւ իմոյ յաւժարութեան կամացս, որ խնդրեցի ի նմանէ, զի եւ դու զփորձ առցես զծառայիս Աստուծոյ. զի գիտասցես, թէ ոչ ոք կարէ մեկնել զյուսացեալս ի նա ի սիրոյ նորա:

 9:15 Gregory replied and note: “My ability to endure this is not through my own power but through the strength of the grace of my Lord and of my well-disposed will, which I sought from him so that you might test this servant of God, that you might know that no one can separate from his love those who hope in him:

9:16 Զի նա տայ ոյժ եւ զաւրութիւն համբերութեան՝ համբերել նեղութեանց եւ փորձութեանց. զի ամաչեսցեն անաւրէնք յունայնութեան իւրեանց եւ յամբարշտութեան եւ յապստամբութեան իւրեանց, որ իբրեւ զքեզդ իցեն, եւ կացցեն ամաւթով յաւուրն այցելութեան եւ յանդիմանութեան:

 9:16 For he gives strength and power to endure and bear afflictions and testings, that the lawless may be ashamed in their inanity and impiety and rebellion [cf. Ps. 24.4] - who will become like you and will stand in shame at the day of visitation and reproach:
