16:1 Եւ իբրեւ եկն եհաս ի սահմանս Հայոց՝ լուաւ Գրիգորիոս, թէ Վահէվանեան մեհեանն մնացեալ է յերկրին Տարաւնոյ, մեհեանն մեծագանձ, լի ոսկւով եւ արծաթով, եւ բազում նուէրք մեծամեծ թագաւորաց ձաւնեալ անդ. ութերորդ պաշտաւն հռչակաւոր, անուանեալն Վիշապաքաղն Վահագնի, յաշտից տեղիք թագաւորացն Հայոց Մեծաց, ի սնարս լերինն Քարքեայ, ի վերայ գետոյն Եփրատայ, որ հանդէպ հայի մեծի լերինն Տաւրոսի, որ եւ անուանեալ ըստ յաճախաշատ պաշտաման տեղեացն՝ Յաշտիշատ:

16:1 As soon as they had reached the borders of the Armenians, Gregory heard that there remained in the Taron country a temple to Vahagn, a temple with a large treasury, full of gold and silver and many gifts presented by the grandee kings. This was the eighth famous shrine, named for Vahagn the Dragon-Reaper, a place of sacrifice for the kings of Great Armenia, located on the summit of Qarqe Mountain on the banks of the Euphrates River, which faces the great Taurus Mountains, and called Yashtishat after the frequent sacrifices made there:

16:2 Զի յայնժամ դեռ եւս շէն կային երեք բագինք ի նմա. առաջին՝ մեհեանն Վահէվանեան, երկրորդն՝ Ոսկեմաւր Ոսկեծին դից, եւ բագինն իսկ յայս անուն անուանեալ Ոսկեհատ Ոսկեմաւր դից. եւ երրորդ՝ մեհեանն անուանեալ Աստղկան դից, Սենեակ Վահագնի կարդացեալ, որ է ըստ յունականին Ափրոդիտէս:

16:2 At this time there still were three sanctuaries remaining in it: first was the temple of Vahevan (Vahagn), second was the altar to the Golden Mother, the goddess born of gold, and the altar was named, after her, golden built of the Golden-mother goddess; and third was the temple named after the goddess Astghik - who is the Greek Aphrodite - called the Chamber of Vahagn:

16:3 Արդ՝ դիմեաց գալ սուրբն Գրիգորիոս, զի քանդեսցէ եւ զայն եւս, զի տակաւին իսկ տգէտ մարդիկ խառնակութեան զոհէին յայս բագինս մնացեալս:

16:3 Now saint Gregory went there so that he might also demolish this site, since ignorant folk were still making impure sacrifices at its remaining altars:

16:4 Եւ իբրեւ դարձեալ գայր նա ի կողմանցն Յունաց՝ բարձեալ բերէր ընդ իւր նշխարս ինչ յոսկերաց մեծի մարգարէին երանեալ մկրտչին Յովհաննու եւ զսուրբ վկային Քրիստոսի զԱթանագինէի:

16:4 As Gregory was returning from Greek territory, he brought with him some relics of the bones of the great prophet, the blessed John the Baptist, and of Athenagenes, the holy martyr of Christ:

16:5 Եւ իբրեւ եկին հասին յանդիման մեհենացն, մաւտ ի գետն Եփրատ՝ կամէր հանել զնոսա ի վեր, ի բարձրաւանդակ տեղի մեհենացն, կործանել զբագինսն, եւ շինել զվկայարանս նոցա:

16:5 Once they had arrived opposite the temples, near the Euphrates River, Gregory wanted to take the relic up to the heights where the temples were located, to destroy the altars and to construct martyria for them:

16:6 Իբրեւ եկին մաւտ եղեն ի գետն Եփրատ իբրեւ ձիոյ արշաւանաւք երկուք, եւ դեռ ընդ փոքր ձորակ մի անցանել կամէին, ընդ ջուր մի սակաւ՝ զտեղի առին սպիտակ ջորիք կառացն, ուր կային գանձքն աստուածային, նշխարք սրբոցն. ոչ կարացին հանել ըստ ձորակն:

16:6 When they had arrived at a distance of about two stadia from the Euphrates River and wanted to cross through yet another small valley with water in it, the white mules pulling the cart that contained the divine treasures - the relics of the saints - stopped and the drivers were unable to move them through the valley:

16:7 Եւ յայտնեալ առ Գրիգոր հրեշտակ Տեառն՝ ասէ. «Հաճեցաւ Տէր զբնակել սրբոցդ Աստուծոյ ի տեղւոջդ:

16:7 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to Gregory and note: “It has pleased the Lord that the saints of God should dwell here in this place:

16:8 Ուր եւ անդէն բազմութեան զաւրացն, մէն սակաւ սատարեալ՝ շինեցին զվկայարանն, եւ զսուրբսն ի հանգիստ փոխեցին:

16:8 And so the multitude of troops all together built a chapel and transferred the saints’ relics there as a resting place:
