1:0 Յաղագս ընդ երկուս բաժանելոյն աշխարհին Հայոց, եւ թագաւորելոյն Արշակայ հրամանաւ թագաւորին Յունաց, եւ կէս ազգին թագաւորեալ Խոսրով հրամանաւ թագաւորին Պարսից, թէ ո՛րպէս զաշխարհն ընդ երկուս բաժանեալ` սահման ի մէջ իւրեանց արկանէին, եւ ո՛րպէս աշխարհն հատան յիւրաքանչիւր յերկոցունց կուսաց:

 1:0 How the land of Armenia was divided in two, with half the Armenian people being ruled by Arshak at the order of the Byzantine emperor, and half the people being ruled by Xosrov at the order of the Iranian king. And how, after the land of Armenia was divided into two parts, they set a boundary between them; how other lands and districts were separated and their territories diminished on all sides by the two foreign powers:

1:1 Ապա յետ մահուն Մանուէլի զօրավարին Հայոց ոչ իմն կարաց հաստատել ի վերայ աշխարհի թագաւորութեանն Արշակայ. այլ բազումք ի Հայոց նախարարացն անտի ելին զատեան գնացին առ թագաւորն Պարսից, եւ մատնեցին նմա զաշխարհն Հայոց. եւ խնդրեցին ի նմանէ թագաւոր արշակունի:

 1:1 After the death of Manuel, Armenia’s general, no one was able to establish the reign of Arshak over the land. Rather, many of the Armenian naxarars went in a body to the king of Iran to whom they betrayed the land of Armenia. They requested from him an Arsacid king:

1:2 Եւ նորա յանձին կալեալ մեծաւ խնդութեամբ ընդ իւր ձեռն տալ իւրով բանիւ ի նմին տոհմէ ի թագաւորութենէն Հայոց արշակունի, եւ նովաւ յինքն գրաւել զաշխարհն Հայոց:

 1:2 With great delight the Iranian king consented to find a candidate from the same Arsacid tohm as the Armenian kingdom, and through him he would get hold of the land of Armenia:

1:3 Ապա գտանէր ի նմին տոհմէ մանուկ մի անուն Խոսրով, եւ կապեաց թագ ի գլուխ նորա. եւ ետ նմա կին զքոյր իւր զԶրուանդուխտ, եւ արար ընդ նմա զամենայն զզօրս զօրութեան իւրոյ. եւ Զիկ նուիրակ դաստիարակ ետ արքային Խոսրովայ. եւ եկին հասին յաշխարհն Հայոց:

 1:3 He found a youth named Xosrov, from that same tohm, put the crown on his head, and married him to his sister Zruanduxt. The Iranian king also sent all the forces at his disposal along with king Xosrov and gave him the nuncio Zik as a tutor. They arrived in the land of Armenia:

1:4 Իբրեւ ետես Արշակ արքայ զնոսա, մերժեցաւ տեղի ետ չոգաւ գնաց ի սահմանս Յունաց, եւ էրն թիկունք Արշակայ թագաւորին Հայոց. եւ Խոսրովու` թագաւորն Պարսից:

 1:4 When king Arshak saw them, he gave way and departed, going to the Byzantine border. The Byzantines supported Arshak as king of Armenia, while the Iranian king supported Xosrov:

1:5 Ապա եկին զօրքն Յունաց թագաւորին ի թիկունս, եւ թագաւորն Արշակ զԵկեղեաց գաւառաւ, եւ զօրքն Պարսից եւ արքայն Խոսրով յԱյրայրատ գաւառին:

 1:5 Then the troops of the Byzantine emperor came to help. King Arshak was in the vicinity of Ekegheats district, while the Iranian troops and king Xosrov were in Ayrarat district:

1:6 Ապա դեսպանք եւ հրեշտակք երկուց թագաւորացն, Յունացն եւ Պարսից, միմեանք առ միմեանս երթեւեկէին:

 1:6 Emissaries and messengers of the two kings, Byzantine and Iranian, were going back and forth to each other:

1:7 Եւ այնուհետեւ առնէ խորհուրդ միաբանութեան հաւանութեան ընդ միմեանս թագաւորն Յունաց եւ թագաւորն Պարսից. եւ լաւ համարեցան զաշխարհն Հայոց նախ ընդ երկուս ի մէջ իւրեանց բաժանել. զի ասէին:

 1:7 Then the two kings decided upon peace. They thought it would be a good thing first to divide the land of Armenia into two parts, between themselves, saying:

1:8 թէ ի միջի բնակեալ է այս հզօր եւ հարուստ թագաւորութիւն, լաւ է զի այսու եղծանել եւ խանկարել կարասցուք զայս թագաւորութիւնս. նախ ընդ երկու բաժանել երկու թագաւորօքս արշակունօք` զորս կացուցաք, ապա եւ ընդ նոսա կրծել ջանասցուք, աղքատացուցանել, ի մէջ արկանել ի ծառայութիւն զի մի՛ կարասցեն ի մէջ մեր ամբառնալ զգլուխս:

 1:8 It would be good to try to obstruct and destroy this mighty and wealthy kingdom which is in our midst. First, we divide it into two, under two Arsacid kings whom we installed. Later through them we shall try to destroy and impoverish the Armenians and put them into service so that they will be unable to raise their heads between us:

1:9 Եւ հաստատեցին զայս խորհուրդ. ընդ երկու զաշխարհն բաժանեցին:

 1:9 They confirmed this plan, and divided the land into two:

1:10 Բաժին կողմանն Պարսից էր թագաւորին Խոսրովու, եւ բաժինն մասին Յունաց էր թագաւորին Արշակայ:

 1:10 The Iranian sector went to king Xosrov, while the Byzantine sector went to king Arshak:

1:11 Բայց եւ ի նոցանէ բազում գաւառք կրծեալք հատեալք այսր անդր, եւ մնաց սակաւ մասն յաշխարհաց երկոցունց առ երկոսեան թագաւորսն:

 1:11 But there were many districts which had been shorn away here and there and only a small part of the lands remained to the two kings:

1:12 Բայց սակայն երկոքեան թագաւորքն Հայոց` Արշակ եւ Խոսրով, որ սիւնքն գաւառքն մնացին թագաւորութեանն Հայոց երկոցուն կողմանց ի մէջ իւրեանց, եւ երկոքեան թագաւորքն արշակունիքն ի մէջ երկու բաժնացն սահմանս արկեալ հաստատէին խաղաղութեամբ, եւ երկիրն Հայոց երկոքեան բաժինքն, երկուց թագաւորացն հնազանդէին իւրաքանչիւր բաժնի իւրաքանչիւր թագաւորի. բայց սակայն մեծ էր Խոսրովու բաժին նորա քան զԱրշակայ:

 1:12 Nonetheless, between the few remaining districts ruled by the two Arsacid kings, Arshak and Xosrov, they established borders peaceably, while each of them was obedient to his own monarch. Xosrov’s sector was larger than Arshak’s:

1:13 Եւ բազում գաւառք յերկոցունցն հատան. նուաղեաց բաժանեցաւ ցրուեցաւ թագաւորութիւնն Հայոց, պակասեաց յիւրմէ մեծութենէն յայն ժամանակն եւ յապայ:

 1:13 But many districts had been cut away from both of them and the greatness of the Armenian kingdom waned then and subsequently:
