34:0 Եւ սպարապետն Հայոց տէրն Մամիկոնէից երանելին Վարդան, առեալ ընդ իւր ի տանուտերացն Հայոց, որք ջերմեռանդն սիրով ճեպէին մարտիրոսութեան ժամուն պատահել, որք էին այսոքիկ. Խորէն Խորխոռունի, Արշաւիր Կամսարական, եւ Թաթուլ Դիմաքսեան, եւ Արտակ Պալունի, եւ Գիւտն Վահեւունեաց, եւ Հմայեակ Դիմաքսեան, եւ այլ տանուտեարք եւ սեպուհք, եւ բազումք ի զաւրացն Հայոց, որք ինքնայաւժար փութով փափագէին լինել վրէժխնդիր ուխտի սուրբ եկեղեցւոյ, եւ տալ զանձինս ի մահ ի վերայ սուրբ եւ ճշմարիտ հաւատոյն Քրիստոսի:

34:0 The venerable Vardan, the sparapet of Armenia and the lord of the Mamikoneans, took along with him the following tanuters of Armenia who hastened to meet the hour of martyrdom with fervent love:
Xorhen Xorxorhuni, Arshawir Kamsarakan, T’at’ul Dimak’sean, Artak Paluni, Giwt Vahewuni, Hmayeak Dimak’sean, as well as other tanuters and sepuhs and many of the troops of Armenia (who willingly and quickly wanted to avenge the covenent of the holy Church, and give their lives for the blessed and correct belief in Christ:

34:1 եւ այլ գունդք ի զաւրացն Մարդպետական այրուձիոյ, փոյթք ի գործ պատերազմին առաքինութեան. զորս եւ չարախորհուրդ իշխանին Սիւնեաց Վասակայ ծանուցեալ ոչ հաւանս իւրոյ չար մտածութեանն` կազմեալս առաքէր ընդ նմա. եւ զորոց գիտէր զհոլովումն ի վատթար կողմն, եւ ոչ ուղղակի ի խորհուրդ ուխտապահութեանն` ի տանուտերացն Հայոց եւ ի սեպհացն, որք էին երեւելագոյնք, եւ յայլ ռամիկ բազմութենէն` զայնս արգելեալ առ իւր պահէր:

34:1 and other brigades from the troops of the Mardpetakan cavalry, who were eager for a war of virtue. (These were people) whom Vasak, the malicious prince of Siwnik’, recognized as not sharing his own intentions, and so organized them and sent them along with (Vardan). But many of the most prominent tanuters of Armenia and the sepuhs, as well as (people) from the rhamik multitude in whom he recognized evil tendencies, and who were not directly (participants) in the plan of the sworn alliance, (Vasak) kept there with him:

34:2 Եւ հրաժարեալ երանելի զաւրավարն Հայոց տէրն Մամիկոնէից Վարդան, հանդերձ ընկերակցաւքն իւրովք եւ այլ զաւրուն արամբք որ էին ընդ նմա, յիշխանէն Սիւնեաց Վասակայ եւ յայլ մնացելոցն ընդ նմա աւագանւոյն` ողջախորհուրդ մտաւք գնային ի գործ պատերազմի:

34:2 Then the venerable general of Armenia, Vardan, lord of the Mamikoneans, together with his comrades and the other force of men with him, said farewell to Vasak, the prince of Siwnik’, and to the remaining nobles with him, and went to battle in sincerity:

34:3 Եւ մտեալ ի տուն Տեառն, որ է սուրբ եկեղեցի, երկիր պագանել տեառն Աստուծոյ ամենակալի, առեալ զսուրբ Աւետարանն եւ զնշան կենսատու խաչին` ողջունէր, դնելով անյագ ի վերայ բբաց աչացն եւ ճակատու:

34:3 Vardan entered a holy church, the house of the Lord, and worshipped the omnipotent lord God. (He) took the holy Gospel and the symbol of the envivifying Cross, and saluted them, insatiably placing them over his eyes and forehead:

34:4 Զնոյն առնէին ջերմեռանդն սիրով եւ որք ընդ նմայն էին ամենեքեան. եւ ողջամբ գնային ամենեքեան յորդորմամբ սիրոյ:

34:4 All of the people who were with him did the same thing with fervent love. Inspired with love, they all departed:

34:5 Եւ չեւ եւս հեռացեալք, տեսանէր աւթեւանս ոչ բազումս յԱյրարատոյ երանելի սպարապետն Հայոց Վարդան՝ եւ իշխանն Սիւնեաց Վասակ վաղվաղակի գաղտ դեսպանս առնէր առ Միհրներսեհ հազարապետն Արեաց եւ զիւր նենգաւոր խորհուրդն նամակաւ ծանուցանէր նմա:

34:5 Now the venerable sparapet of Armenia, Vardan, had not passed many lodging-places in (the district of) Ayrarat when Vasak, the prince of Siwnik’, quickly sent secret emissaries to Mihrnerseh, the hazarapet of the Aryans, informing him in a letter of his treacherous plan:

34:6 Նոյնպէս արար նամակ եւ առ Նիխորական Սեբուխտ եւ առ այլ աւագս, զորս արարեալ էր Միհրներսեհի ի վերայ Հայոց, - եւ զՎեհշապուհ հաւատարիմ վերակացու արար, որ էր ի ժամուն սենեկապան արքունի, յետ այնորիկ ապա եւ դպրապետ եղեւ Արեաց, - յորում գրեալ եցոյց նոցա նենգաւոր իշխանն Սիւնեաց Վասակ զիւր խաբէութեանն կամս:

34:6 He also wrote to Nixorakan Sebuxt and to other seniors whom Mihrnerseh had sent against Armenia—and to Vehshapuh whom he had made his loyal overseer (who was then the royal chamberlain, but subsequently became head of the Aryan dibheran). Vasak, the duplicitous prince of Siwnik’, wrote to demonstrate his treacherous will to them:

34:7 Դուք, ասէ, անհոգ լերուք յեկելոցդ ընդ Վարդանայ ի վերայ ձեր, եւ մի՛ ինչ զարհուրիք. վասն զի շատք այն են` զորս ես աստէն պահեցի առ իս. եւ զայլս բազումս ընդ այսր ընդ այնր ցրուեցի. եւ դա յոյժ սակաւուք է եւ ոչ բազմաւք:

34:7 Be at ease regarding Vardan’s advance upon you, and have no fear. For there are many (warriors) whom I have kept here with me, and I have dispersed many others here and there. Their numbers are not many, but few:

34:8 Եւ զայն ոչ յիշէր անաւրէնն, թէ սիրտք իշխանաց ի ձեռս Աստուծոյ են. քանզի որով կարծէր չարախորհուրդն շնորհ ինչ առնել նոցա` առաւել եւս զաւրութիւնն Աստուծոյ ի բարկութիւն սրտմտութեան փոխէր, եւ այնու գրգռէր զնոսա ի վերայ նորա. որ եւ ի ժամուն կատարեալ` կուտեցաւ ի գլուխ նորա ցուցակութեամբ:

34:8 But this impious one did not remember the fact that the hearts of princes rest in God’s hands. For, as will be shown, the malicious (Vasak) who hoped by his actions to gain favor from (the Iranians), had even more roused the power of God’s anger and (God) turned (the Iranians) against him. And at the final moment (Vasak’s actions) collapsed on his own head:
