91:1 Յաղագս մահուանն Գրիգորի եւ Արիստակեայ, եւ թէ է՛ր աղագաւ կոչի լեառնն` Մանեայ այրք:

 91:1 Concerning the death of Gregory and Aristakēs, and why the mountain is called “Caves of Manē:

91:2 Յեաւթն եւ ի տասներորդի ամի թագաւորութեանն Տրդատայ գտաք նստեալ յաթոռ սրբոյ առաքելոյն Թադէոսի զհայրն մեր Գրիգորիոս եւ ըստ Աւետարանի ծնող:

 91:2 In the seventeenth year of Trdat’s reign we have found that our father and parent in the gospel, Gregory, sat on the throne of the holy apostle Thaddaeus:

91:3 Յետ լուսաւորելոյ զամենայն Հայս լուսով աստուածգիտութեան, եւ ջնջելոյ զխաւար կռապաշտութեանն, եւ լնլոյ զամենայն կողմանս եպիսկոպոսաւք եւ վարդապետաւք` սիրեաց զլերինս եւ զամայութիւն եւ զհանդարտութեամբ մտաց յինքեան կեալ, որպէս զի խաւսեսցի ընդ Աստուծոյ անզբաղապէս. փոխանորդ իւր թողլով զորդի իւր զԱրիստակէս, ինքն կալով ի գաւառին Դարանաղեաց, ի լերինն Մանեայ այրս:

 91:3 After illuminating the whole of Armenia with the light of divine knowledge, banishing the darkness of idolatry and filling all regions with bishops and teachers, in his love for the mountains and solitude and a secluded life with tranquility of mind to speak to God without distraction, he left his own son Aristakes as his successor and remained himself in the province of Daranaḷik’ in the mountain “Caves of Manē:

91:4 Այլ ասասցուք, թէ է՛ր աղագաւ կոչի Մանեայ այրք:

 91:4 But let us explain why it is called “Caves of Manē:

91:5 Քանզի էր կին ոմն անուն Մանի, յընկերաց սրբոց Հռիփսիմեանց, որպէս զՆունէ Վրաց վարդապետուհի. որ ոչ շութափեաց հետեւել նոցա ի գալն առ մեզ, գիտելով զամենայն տեղիս` Աստուծոյ, բնակեցաւ ի լերինս յայսոսիկ, յայրս ինչ քարանց. վասն որոյ կոչեցաւ անուն լերինն Մանեայ այրք. յոր այրի յետոյ բնակեցաւ եւ սուրբն Գրիգոր:

 91:5 There was a certain woman, Manē by name, among the companions of Saint Rhipsimē, like Nunē, the teacher of the Georgians, who made no haste to follow them when they came among us; but knowing that all places are God’s, she dwelt in these mountains in some caves in the rock. For this reason, the mountain was named “Caves of Manē,” and in that cave later dwelt Saint Gregory:

91:6 Այլ թէպէտ եւ բնակեցաւ անդ, սակայն ընդ ժամանակս ժամանակս յայտնեալ շրջէր ընդ աշխարհս, հաստատէր ի հաւատս զաշակերտեալսն:

 91:6 But although he lived there, nevertheless from time to time he revealed himself and traveled about the country, confirming his disciples in the faith:

91:7 Բայց իբրեւ եկն նորին որդին Արիստակէս ի ժողովոյն Նիկիայ` յայնմ հետէ ոչ եւս երեւեցաւ յայտնել ումեք սուրբն Գրիգորիոս:

 91:7 But when his own son Aristakēs returned from the council of Nicaea, thenceforth Saint Gregory appeared no more to anyone:

91:8 Վասն որոյ յիսկզբան քահանայանալոյ նորա, յեաւթն եւ ի տասներորդ ամէ թագաւորութեանն Տրդատայ մինչեւ ցքառասուն եւ վեցերորդ ամն նորին, յորմէ հետէ ոչ եւս յաւել ումեք երեւել` համարեալ թուին ամք երեսուն:

 91:8 Therefore from the beginning of his priesthood in the seventeenth year of Trdat’s reign until the forty-seventh of the same, from when he no longer appeared to anyone, are reckoned thirty years:

91:9 Եւ յետ նորա Արիստակէս ամս եաւթն, ի քառասուն եւ յեաւթներորդ ամէն Տրդատայ մինչեւ ցյիսուն եւ երրորդ ամն նորին, յորում եղեւ կատարումն Արիստակեայ:

 91:9 After him Aristakēs was patriarch for seven years, from the forty-seventh year of Trdat until his fifty-second, in which Aristakēs died:

91:10 Զի արդարեւ էր սուսեր հոգեւոր ըստ ասացելումն, վասն որոյ թշնամի ամենայն անիրաւաց եւ զազրագործաց թուէր նա:

 91:10 Truly he was a spiritual sword, according to the saying [cf. Eph. 6:17; Heb. 4:12], and thus was accounted an enemy of all the unjust and evildoers:

91:11 Յաղագս որոյ եւ Արքեղայոս, որ էր կարգեալ ի վերակացութիւն Չորրորդն կոչեցեալ Հայոց, կշտամբեալ ի նմանէ` սպասեաց դիպող աւուր. եւ պատահեալ նմա ի ճանապարհի ի Ծոփաց գաւառին` սպան զնա սրով, եւ ինքն գնաց փախստական ի Տաւրոս Կիւլիկեցւոց:

 91:11 Therefore Archilaeus, who had been appointed to the governorship of what is called Fourth Armenia, on being reprimanded by him waited for an opportune day. And meeting him on the road in the province of Tsop’k’, he slew him by the sword and fled himself to the Taurus of Cilicia:

91:12 Իսկ զմարմին երանելւոյն բարձեալ աշակերտաց նորին` բերին յԵկեղեաց գաւառն, հանգուցանել ի Թիլն, յիւրում աւանին:

 91:12 But his disciples took the saint’s body to the province of Ekeḷeats’ and laid it to rest in T’il, his own town:

91:13 Եւ յաջորդեաց զաթոռն երէց եղբայր նորին Վրթանէս, ի յիսուն եւ ի չորրորդ ամէն Տրդատայ եւ անդր:

 91:13 His elder brother Vrt’anēs succeeded him from the fifty-fourth year of Trdat on:

91:14 Բայց սրբոյն Գրիգորի ի Մանեայ այրն կեցեալ աներեւութաբար ամս բազումս` փոխի մահուամբ ի կարգս հրեշտակաց:

 91:14 Saint Gregory lived in seclusion in the Cave of Manē for many years and on his death was transposed to the ranks of the angels:

91:15 Եւ հովուաց գտեալ զնա վախճանեալ` ի նմին տեղւոջ թաղեցին, ոչ գիտելով թէ ո՛վ ոք նա իցէ:

 91:15 Shepherds found him dead and buried him in the same place without knowing who he was:

91:16 Վայելէր իսկ նոցա, որք Փրկչին մերոյ ծննդեանն եղեն խորհրդածուք, լինել եւ աշակերտին յուղարկմանն սպասաւորք:

 91:16 It was indeed fitting that they who were the ministers of our Savior’s birth [cf. Luke 2:13] should also be the servants of his disciple’s burial:

91:17 Եւ ծածկեալ ամս բազումս աստուածային իմն գոգցես տեսչութեամբ, իբրեւ զՄովսէսն զայն ի հնումն, զի մի՛ ի պաշտաւն ի դեռահաւատ բարբարոսացս առցի ազգաց:

 91:17 Saint Gregory’s relics were hidden for many years by divine providence you might say, like Moses of old [cf. Deut. 34:6], lest they become the object of a cult to the half-converted barbarian nations:

91:18 Իսկ յորժամ սերտեալ հիմնեցան հաւատք կողմանցս այսոցիկ` զկնի յետ բազում ժամանակաց յայտնեցաւ ճգնաւորի ումեմն Գառնիկ անուն կոչեցելոյ, եւ բերել եդաւ ի գեաւղն Թորդան նշխարք սրբոյն Գրիգորի:

 91:18 But when the faith had become firmly established in these regions, after a long time Saint Gregory’s relics were revealed to a certain ascetic called Gaṙnik, who took them and buried them in the village of T’ordan:

91:19 Սա, որպէս ամենեցուն յայտնի է, աշխարհաւ Պարթեւ, գաւառաւ Պահլաւ, յազգէ թագաւորեցելոյ զատուցեալ Արշակունի, ի ցեղէ Սուրենական, ի հաւրէ Անակ կոչեցելոյ, յարեւելից կողմանց աշխարհիս մերոյ` արեւելք ճշմարիտ ծագեալ մեզ եւ իմանալի արեգակն եւ հոգեւոր ճառագայթ, ի խորին չարութենէ կռապաշտութեան ելք, երանութեան եւ շինութեան հոգեւորի առիթ, աստուածային արդարեւ արմաւենի տնկեալ ի տան Տեառն եւ ի գաւիթս Աստուծոյ մերոյ ծաղկեալ:

 91:19 He, Gregory, as is clear to all, was a Parthian by origin, from the province of Pahlav, a descendant of the reigning Arsacid family, from the Surēn branch through his father called Anak. From the eastern regions of our land he arose for us as a true dawn, a spiritual sun and divine ray, an escape from the profound evil of idolatry, the source of blessing and spiritual prosperity, truly a divine palm tree planted in the house of the Lord and flourishing in the courts of our God:

91:20 Եւ այսպիսեաւք եւ այսքանեաւք ժողովրդովք բազմացեալ, ի ծերութիւն պարարտութեան հոգեւորի զմեզ ժողովեաց ի փառս եւ ի գովեստ Աստուծոյ:

 91:20 He increased the number of the faithful among such and so many peoples and gathered us to an old age of spiritual wealth [cf. Ps. 91:15] for the glory and praise of God:
