 31:0 The murder of the emperor Maurice and the reign of Phocas. Rebellion of the generals Heraclius and Nersēs from Phocas. The siege of Urha by the army of Phocas, and of Dara by the army of Khosrov. Arrival of Khosrov to assist Urha; he captures the city and returns with Theodosius, son of Maurice. The capture and destruction of Dara by Khosrov. Capture of Urha by the army of Phocas, and the murder of Nersēs:

31:1 Եւ եղեւ յամի չորեքտասաներորդի Խոսրովայ արքայի, ի քսաներորդ ամի Մաւրկայ թագաւորութեանն՝ ապստամբեալ ի բաց կացին ի կայսերէ զաւրն Յունաց, որ ի Թրակացւոց կողմանէ, եւ նստուցին իւրեանց թագաւոր զայր ոմն անուն Փոկաս կոչեցեալ: Եւ գնացեալ միաբանութեամբ ի Կոստանդնուպաւլիս՝ սպանին զՄաւրիկ թագաւոր եւ զորդիս նորա, եւ նստուցին զՓոկաս յաթոռ թագաւորութեանն:

 31:1 In the [14th] year of king Khosrov, the [20th] year of the reign of Maurice, the Greek army in the region of Thrace rebelled from the emperor and installed as their king a certain man called Phocas. They went in unison to Constantinople, killed the king Maurice and his sons, and installed Phocas on the throne of the kingdom:

31:2 Եւ գնացին ինքեանք անդէն ի կողմանս Թրակացւոց աշխարհին ի դէմ թշնամւոյն: Եւ էր որդի մի կայսերն Մաւրկայ, անուն նորա Թէոդոս: Լուր համբաւոյն ելեալ տարածանէր ընդ ամենայն երկիր, եթէ զերծաւ Թէոդոս եւ գնաց առ թագաւորն Պարսից:

 31:2 Then they returned to the regions of Thrace against the enemy. The emperor Maurice had a son named T’ēodos. A rumour spread over the whole country that T’ēodos had escaped and gone to the Persian king:

31:3 Ապա ոչ սակաւ ինչ խռովութիւն լինէր ի մէջ Հռովմայեցւոց տէրութեանն անդէն ի թագաւորանիստ քաղաքին, եւ յԱղեքսանդր քաղաքի յԵգիպտոս, եւ յԵրուսաղէմ եւ յԱնտիոք, եւ յամենայն կողմանս երկրի առեալ սուր զմիմեանս սատակէին:

 31:3 Then there was no little turmoil in the Roman empire - there in the royal capital, and in the city of Alexandria in Egypt, and in Jerusalem and Antioch. In all regions of the land they took up the sword and slaughtered each other:

31:4 Հրաման ետ թագաւորն Փոկաս սատակել զամենայն ապստամբ՝ որ երկմտեալ էին ի նորին թագաւորութենէ: Բազումք սատակեցան անդէն սրով ի թագաւորանիստ քաղաքին: Եւ առաքեալ զԲոնոս ոմն իշխան հանդերձ զաւրու ի վերայ Անտիոքայ եւ յԵրուսաղէմ եւ յամենայն կողմանս աշխարհին. եւ նորա երթեալ եհար զԱնտիոք եւ զԵրուսաղէմ սրով սուսերի, եւ զամենայն իսկ զբազմութիւն քաղաքաց երկրին այնորիկ սպառեաց սրով:

 31:4 The king Phocas ordered all the rebels who were disloyal to his reign to be slaughtered. Many were put to the sword in the royal capital. He sent a certain prince Bonos with an army against Antioch and Jerusalem and all regions of that land. He came, attacked Antioch and Jerusalem with the sword, and exterminated the large population of the cities of that land:

31:5 Յայնժամ ապստամբեալ ի բաց եկաց ի Փոկասայ Երակլէս զաւրավար զաւրու իւրով, որ էր ի կողմանս Աղեքսանդրի, եւ բռնացեալ ի բաց կալաւ զերկիրն Եգիպտացւոց: Եւ յԱսորւոց կողմանէ ապստամբեալ Ներսէս զաւրավար ի Միջագետս Ասորւոց, եւ հանդերձ զաւրու իւրով մտեալ բռնանայ յՈւրհայ քաղաքի: Եւ եկեալ զաւր ի վերայ նորա՝ պատեալ պաշարեալ պահէին զքաղաքն հանդերձ զաւրու:

 31:5 Then the general Heraclius with his army, who was in the regions of Alexandria, rebelled against Phocas and forcibly took over the land of Egypt. In the area of Syria the general Nersēs rebelled in Mesopotamia, and with his army seized control of the city of Urha. An army came to attack him, and they kept the city and his army besieged:

31:6 Եւ եղեւ՝ իբրեւ լուաւ արքայն Խոսրով զլուր համբաւոյն այնորիկ՝ ժողովեալ գումարեաց զամենայն բազմութիւն զաւրաց իւրոց, եւ գնաց ընդ արեւմուտս, եւ հասեալ ի Դարա քաղաք՝ նստաւ շուրջ զնովաւ եւ պաշարեաց զնա, եւ մարտ եդեալ կռուէր ընդ նմա: Եւ ընդ կողմանս Հայոց գումարեալ զաւրս, եւ զՋուան Վեհ ոմն իշխան մեծ զաւրագլուխ նոցա: Յայնժամ արքայ Խոսրով բաժանէ յերկուս մասունս. զմի մասն եթող անդէն շուրջ զքաղաքաւն, եւ միւսով մասամբն գնաց ինքն ի վերայ զաւրուն, որ պատեալ պաշարեալ պահէին զՈւրհայ:

 31:6 Now when king Khosrov heard news of this, he gathered all the host of his army and marched westwards. On reaching the city of Dara, he besieged and attacked it. In the area of Armenia, he assembled troops and appointed a certain great prince Juan Veh as their commander. Then king Khosrov divided (his forces) into two parts. One part he left there around the city; with the other part he himself marched against the army which was besieging Urha:

31:7 Եւ հասեալ ի վերայ նոցա յանկարծաւրէն ի ծագել առաւաւտուն՝ զոմանս սատակէր սրով, զոմանս փախստական արարեալ, կէսքն ամացեալ ի գետն Եւփրատ մեռանէին, եւ կէսքն գնային հալածական: Իսկ արքայն Խոսրով մատուցեալ ի դուռն քաղաքին, զի բացցեն նմա եւ մտցէ ի ներքս. իսկ նոքա բացին զդուռն:

 31:7 Attacking them unexpectedly at dawn, some he put to the sword, some he turned to flight. Some jumped into the river Euphrates and perished; the others were scattered in flight. Then king Khosrov approached the gate of the city so that they might open it for him to enter inside; and they opened the gate:

31:8 Բայց մանուկ մի զարդարեալ թագաւորական հանդերձիւ, եւ եդեալ ի վերայ գլխոյն նորա պսակ, եւ եհան արձակեաց առ նա Ներսէս, ասէ. «Դա է որդի թագաւորին Մաւրկայ, Թէոդոս, եւ արասցես ի վերայ դորա ողորմութիւն, որպէս եւ հայր դորա ի վերայ քոյ:

 31:8 But Nersēs dressed a youth in royal garb, placed a crown on his head, and sent him to him, saying: ’This is the son of king Maurice, T’ēodos; do you have pity on him, just as his father had on you. ’:

31:9 Եւ մեծաւ խնդութեամբ ընկալեալ զնա Խոսրովայ արքայի, դարձաւ անդրէն եւ գնաց ի Դարա քաղաք, եւ ունէր զնա առ իւր թագաւորական պատուով. եւ նստաւ նա շուրջ զԴարայիւ զտարի մի եւ կէս, եւ փորեցին զհիմունս քաղաքին ի ներքոյ պարսպին, եւ կործանեալ զպարիսպն նորա՝ առին զքաղաքն, եւ սուր ի վերայ եդեալ մաշեցին զամենայն սրով սուսերի:

 31:9 With great joy king Khosrov received him, then returned to the city of Dara. He kept (the youth) with him with royal honour. He besieged Dara for a year and a half. They mined the foundations of the city below the wall; and having destroyed the wall, they captured the city and put all (the inhabitants) to the sword:

31:10 Եւ առեալ զառ եւ զաւար քաղաքին, դարձան անդրէն ի Տիզբոն, քանզի էր զաւր նորա աշխատեալ եւ լքեալ ի պատերազմէ քաղաքին: Եւ հասեալ ի վերայ Ուրհայի այլ զաւր ի Յունաց կողմանէ՝ մարտեան ընդ քաղաքին եւ առին զնա. եւ կալեալ զՆերսէս սպանին եւ արիւն հեղին:

 31:10 Taking the booty and plunder of the city they returned to Ctesiphon, because his army was weary and exhausted from the battle for the city. Another army from Greek territory reached Urha, attacked and captured the city. Arresting Nersēs, they killed him and shed blood:
