12:0 Յետ նորա փոխանորդէ զիշխանութիւնն Սուլէյման ամս [Բ] եւ ամիսս [Ը], եւ վախճանի: Եւ այս է վարք նորա:

 12:0 Sulaiman [715-717] succeeded al-Walid as caliph, ruling for two years and eight months and then dying. Here follows an account of his deeds:

12:1 Սա յերկրորդ ամի իշխանութեան իւրոյ գումարէր զօրս բազումս եւ տայր ի ձեռս զօրավարին Մսլիմայ եւ առաքէր ի դրունս Կասպից: Որոց եկեալ եւ մարտ եդեալ ընդ զօրս Հոնաց որ ի Դարբանդ քաղաքի՝ հարին զնոսա եւ հալածեցին. եւ քանդեալ աւերեցին զդղեակապարիսպ ամրոցին:

 12:1 In the second year of his reign Sulaiman assembled numerous troops, entrusted them to General Maslama (Mslim), and sent him to the Caspian Gates. They arrived and fought against the Huns (Khazars) who were in the city of Darband (Derbend), striking and afflicting them. The Arabs demolished the walls of the fortress:

12:2 Եւ մինչդեռ քանդէին զպարիսպ ամրոցին՝ գտին վէմ մի մեծ ի հիմունս նորա, որ ունէր վերնագիր դրոշմեալ օրինակ զայս. «Մարկիանոս ինքնակալ կայսր շինեաց զքաղաք եւ զաշտարակս զայս բազում տաղանդօք յիւրոց գանձուց. եւ ի յետին ժամանակս որդիքն Իսմայելի քանդեսցեն զսա եւ յիւրեանց գանձուց վերստին շինեսցեն:

 12:2 While pulling down the fortress walls, they uncovered a large stone in the foundation which bore this inscription: “The autocrat emperor Marcian (Markianos) [450-457] built this city and these towers at great expense with funds from his treasury. In later times the sons of Ishmael will demolish it and rebuild it once more with funds from their own treasury:

12:3 Եւ իբրեւ գտին զդրոշմ գրոյն զոր ունէր քարն՝ դադարեցին ի քակելոյ զպարիսպն. եւ կացուցեալ գործավարս ի վերայ՝ վերստին շինեցին զկործանեալ պարիսպն:

 12:3 As soon as the Arabs discovered this inscribed rock, they ceased pulling down the wall. Then, after designating overseers, they started to rebuild the demolished wall:

12:4 Եւ ինքն Մսլիմ առեալ զբազմութիւն զօրացն՝ անցանէր ընդ պահակն Ճորայ, ասպատակ սփռեալ յաշխարհն Հոնաց. եւ երթեալ բանակէր մերձ առ Թարգու քաղաքի Հոնաց: Իսկ բնակիչք աշխարհին իբրեւ տեսին զհէնն, որ զարթուցեալ հասանէր ի վերայ նոցա՝ վաղվաղակի ազդ առնէին արքային Խագրաց, որ անուանեալ կոչէր Խաքան:

 12:4 Maslama took a multitude of troops and crossed through the Chora (Darband) Gates, raiding the land of the Huns. He went and pitched camp close to T’argu, a city of the Huns. Now as soon as the inhabitants of the land spotted the Arab bandits who had arisen and had come against them, they forthwith notified the king of the Khazars, whom they styled Qaqan:

12:5 Իսկ նորա առեալ ընդ իւր զբազմութիւն զօրացն եւ զամենայն յաղթանդամ հսկայազունսն իւր, որոց արիութիւն զօրութեանն հռչակեալ էր առ ամենայն ազգս՝ եւ եկեալ բանակէր մերձ առ նմա:

 12:5 The latter gathered up a host of troops, and all his gigantic and strong-bodied forces—whose renown for bravery was acclaimed among all peoples—and he came and encamped close to the Arabs:

12:6 Եւ ի բազում աւուրս մարտ եդեալ մարտնչէին ընդ միմեանս, ոչ գունդ առ գունդ, այլ ըմբշամարտ մարտիւ: Եւ յապաղէր Խաքանն զխառնամխի պատերազմն վասն գալստեան ԱլփԹարխանին, զոր էր կոչեալ ի թիկունս օգնականութեան:

 12:6 They did battle with each other for many days, but not fighting brigade against brigade. Rather, the combat was wrestling. The Khaqan was delaying entering the fray until the arrival of Alp T’arxan, whom he had called upon for assistance:

12:7 Իբրեւ ետես Սուլիման զանհուն զօրացն զբազմութիւն՝ վարանէր յանձն իւր, եւ խորհէր եթէ զիա՛րդ մարթասցէ հնարս գտանել, զի կարասցէ զերծանել ի նոցանէ:

 12:7 When Maslama observed the countless multitude of troops facing him, he began to doubt himself and wondered whether he could find some means of extricating himself from them:

12:8 Եւ հրաման տուեալ զօրացն լուցանել հուր սաստիկ ի բանակին. եւ թողեալ զաղխս բանակին անդէն, զհարճս եւ զծառայս եւ զաղախնեայս եւ գայլ խառնիճաղանճսն՝ ճանապարհ կալեալ ընդ լեառն Կովկաս՝ կոտորէր զանտառն, եւ ճանապարհ արարեալ զերծանէր մազապուր ի ձեռաց թշնամեացն:

 12:8 So he ordered his troops to kindle an enormous fire in the camp. Then, leaving behind his army’s equippage, concubines, servants and serving women and all the rest of the camp rabble, Maslama cut a path through the Caucasus Mountains, destroying forests as he went. Thus was he able to take to the road and escape from the clutches of the enemy by a hairsbreadth:

12:9 Եւ այնպէս կորագլուխ դառնայր լի ամօթով յաշխարհն Հոնաց: Եւ կատարեալ զայս ամենայն՝ վախճանեցաւ Մսլիման:

 12:9 And thus did he return from the land of the Huns, with his head bowed in disgrace. After all these events, Sulaiman died:
