38:0 Յաղագս Աշոտոյ եւ Հասանայ Արծրունեաց խռովութեանն, եւ մահուանն Աշոտոյ:	38:0 The Discord between Ashot and Hasan Arcruni, and the Death of Ashot:
38:1 Զայսու ժամանակաւ մեծ իշխանն Արծրունեաց Աշոտ, որի բողբոջից բուսոյ Սենեքերիմայ արքայի՝ ելեալ զգնայր շրջէր զկողմամբք իւրոյ տէրութեանն փոքր ինչ գնդով. եւ հասեալ ի ձորակ մի, զոր Փորակ Լմբայ անուանեն՝ երեկօթս անդ առնէին յագարակի միոջ, յորում բնակէին Գաբաւոնացիք՝ ընդ յարկաւ շինուածի տանցն մտեալ զետեղեալ սակս ձմեռային ժամանակին:	38:1 About this time, Ashot, the great prince of the Arcruni, who was of the descendants of King Sennacherib, set out to make a tour of his own domain with a small army, and having reached a glen called P’orak Lmbay, he spent the night there on an agarek, where the Gabawonac’ik’ (Gibeonites) lived, and took shelter under the roofs of houses because of the wintry season:
38:2 Իսկ Հասանն Արծրունի՝ որդի Վասակայ ուրացելոյ զՔրիստոս եւ հօրաքեռ որդի նոյն իշխանին Աշոտոյ, բնակութիւն կայանի իւրոյ ունէր զամրոցն անուանեալ Սեւան:	38:2 Hasan Arcruni, the son of Vasak who had renounced Christ, and of the paternal aunt of the very same prince Ashot, had his residence at the fortress of Sewan:
38:3 Իսկ իբրեւ լուաւ զիշխանէն յայնմիկ Փորակի գալ յիջեւանս՝ դաւաճանեալ ի չար դիւէ անտի եւ կամաւոր կուրութիւն յինքն կրեալ, զօր ի գաղտնիս իմն կազմէր, սրիկայս պատրաստէր, աղեղնաւորս, շեշտաւորս, սուսերաւորս, վահանավառս կորովիս զէնս շարժեալ. եւ ինքն իսկ հուպ ընդ նոսին տրեխաւորեալ եւ յաղակարծս դիմեալ չուեալ գիշերի հասանէին ի վերայ իշխանին:	38:3 Upon learning that prince Ashot had encamped in this glen, he was deceived by the wicked wiles of Satan, and blinded by his own free will, he secretly mustered his forces, got ready his assassins, marshalled his warriors, bowmen, hatchetmen, swordsmen, and vigorous peltasts, and followed them closely behind. Marching through the night, they came upon the prince unexpectedly:
38:4 եւ պարայածեալ, պատեալ, շրջափակեալ, պաշարեալ պահէին զդրունսն տանցն, յորում օթագայեալն լինէր իշխանն Աշոտ իւրայօքն ի դիպահոջ իմն զնոսա բերեալ եւ ի ձեռս կարծեցեալ ըմբռնեալ:	38:4 and surrounded the gates of the houses where prince Ashot and his retinue were spending the night. Having confined the latter within, they considered the enemy already apprehended:
38:5 Իսկ ապա Հասանն յեցեալ ի նիզակն զոր ունէր՝ եւ կիցս իբրեւ զայծեամն ընկեցեալ ի տանիսն, յորում իշխանն կայր՝ վազէր. եւ ի տրոփական դոփմանէ ոտիցն թնդեալ տանիքն եւ ի վայր փլուզեալ՝ հոսեալ անկանէր զկնի փլուզմանն Հասանն ի տուն անդ:	38:5 Thereupon, Hasan with the help of the spear which he held in his hand, leaped like a deer onto the roof of the house in which the prince was, and began to run, when the roof caved in because of the heavy tramping of his feet, and with the roof Hasan himself fell in:
38:6 Իսկ ապա ի հագագասփիւռ ձայնէ խօսիցն Հասանայ՝ զնա ծանուցեալ եւ վաղվաղակի ըմբռնեալ ածէին զնա առ իշխանն:	38:6 Here he was recognized by the guttural quality of his voice, whereupon they seized him immediately, and brought him to prince Ashot:
38:7 Իսկ աղխատրոյզ շփոթմանն իրազգած եղեալ զօրացն Հասանայ՝ իբրեւ զծուխ ի մրրկէ հալածեալ եւ փախստեայ անհետ կորնչէին:	38:7 But when Hasan’s men became aware of the confusion, they fled and vanished without a trace, like smoke blown away by the wind:
38:8 Եւ այսպէս զգուբն, զոր եւ փորեաց եւ պեղեաց Հասանն՝ ի նոյն ընկլուզաւ, զոր եւ գործեաց:	38:8 Thus the very pit which Hasan had dug (for someone else), swallowed him:
38:9 Իսկ իշխանն Աշոտ ի շղթայս կապարանի զնա արկեալ՝ եւ առեալ տարեալ յամրոցն Սեւան, ի դուրս առ ինքն զամրոցն տալ հայցէր:	38:9 Prince Ashot put him in fetters, and brought him to the fortress of Sewan, where, standing before the gates, he demanded that the fortress be turned over to him:
38:10 Իսկ մայրն Հասանայ եւ եղբայր նորուն, որ առ ի մօրէ եւ ոչ ի հօրէ՝ բռնազբօսեալ՝ ոչ կամեցան տալ զբերդն, ոչ կարացեալ վստահ լինիլ ի խոստացեալ բանս իշխանին վասն ողջանդամ զկապեալն Հասան թողլոյ:	38:10 However, Hasan’s mother and brother—on his mother’s side, but not on his father’s—did not wish to give him the fortress under threat of force, because they could not be sure of the promises of the prince concerning the safe return of Hasan:
38:11 Ապա զգացուցեալ արքայի Սմբատայ՝ հարկ առնէր ինձ երթալ յամբոկ գործոյն, թերեւս կարողութիւն լիցի փակել զկորստական դուռն, զոր անձամբ անձին եբաց Հասան:	38:11 When the news reached king Smbat, he advised me to go and resolve the matter, with the expectation that perhaps I could close the doorway of destruction which Hasan had opened before himself:
38:12 Իսկ իմ երթեալ չուեալ եւ համոզեալ զտիկինն վասն զամրոցն տալոյ եւ փրկելոյ զՀասան ի մահու երկիւղէ եւ ողջանդամ զնա լուծանել ի կապարանէն:	38:12 I went and persuaded the princess to turn over the fortress in order to save Hasan from the danger of death and assure his safe return from captivity:
38:13 ընկալայ ապա եւ յիշխանէն յետկար սաստիկ երդմանց՝ լուծանել թողուլ ողջանդամ եւ անվնաս զՀասան:	38:13 Then I acquired from the prince a solemn oath promising to release Hasan unharmed:
38:14 Իսկ ես իբրեւ առեալ ետու զամրոցն ի ձեռն իշխանին, ապա ի նանրական չար խորհրդոց ազատաց ոմանց հրապուրեալ՝ փորէ զաչսն Հասանայ, կուրացուցեալ զնա տգիտաբար ի կորուստ անձին իւրոյ. վասն զի որք երդմանց օրինաց եւ միջնորդաց առաջնորդաց հեստեալք եւ դիւրափոփոխք գտանին ի հակամիտութիւն հակառակացն բերեալ՝ այնպիսիքն մահու անձանց առիթք գտեալք, ոչ կարեն հաստատուն կեանս իւրեանց ստանալ:	38:14 After receiving the fortress, I handed it over to the prince. Subsequently, attracted by the futile and wicked advice of certain azats, the latter had Hasan’s eyes put out, and through ignorance brought damnation upon himself; for all those who break their oath, or heed not the words of an intervening prelate, or are easily swayed by the opposite view, bring about their own destruction, and cannot acquire for themselves a secure life:
38:15 Իսկ իմ զաւետարանական իշխանութիւնն ի գործ արկեալ եւ բանիւ սահմանականաւ կապեալ զիշխանն՝ տրտում թախձանօք անցեալ գնացի:	38:15 But I employed the power invested in me by the gospels, and having excommunicated the prince, returned in deep sorrow:
38:16 Ապա յետ ամի միոյ անցելոյ՝ տգիտութիւն յանդգնութեան արկաւ իբրեւ զօթոց զբարեվայելուչ եւ զպատկառող եւ զչքնաղատեսակ դիտակաւն Աշոտոյ:	38:16 After one year, recklessness and ignorance robed Ashot’s becoming, stately, and handsome stature like a garment:
38:17 Եւ այսպէս զվախճան կենաց ընկալեալ ի տիս երիտասարդութեան՝ սաստիկ սուգ տրտմութեան զմեօք զեղեալ յարդարէր:	38:17 Thus, still in the prime of his youth, he met his end, and afflicted us with deep grief:
38:18 Զկնի ապա եղբայր նորուն Գագիկ պայազատէ զիշխանութիւնն զայն մեծ. եւ զկրտսեր եղբայր նորուն զԳուրգէն կացուցանէ մարզպան Հայոց արքայն Սմբատ:	38:18 His brother Gagik succeeded to his large domain, and king Smbat set up his younger brother Gurgen as marzpan of Armenia:
