44:0 Յաղագս անձնատուր լինելոյ Յուսփայ Աշոտի սպարապետի, եւ ազատութեան Յովհաննու կաթողիկոսի:	44:0 Surrender of the Sparapet Ashot to Yusuf and the Release of the Katholikos Yovhannes:
44:1 Բայց ոստիկանն Յուսուփ ի բոլոր յեղանակս ամարայնոյն իբրեւ զանգայռագեղ առիւծ մռմռեալ եւ յորս զինքն Սմբատայ պատրաստեալ՝ այնպէս ի բազում աւուրս դեգերէր:	44:1 The ostikan Yusuf roared liked a wild lion throughout the entire duration of the summer season, during which time he made preparation against Smbat, and was thus preoccupied for several days:
44:2 Սակայն ոչ կարացեալ ստնանել ինչ նմա յայնմ նուագի սակս ի լերինս բարձունս ամրանալոյն եւ ի խորափիտ ձորս եւ յամուրս քարանձաւաց, ապա չուէ գայ դարձեալ ի Դվին քաղաք:	44:2 Nevertheless, unable to do any harm on that occasion, because the king had taken refuge in the fastnesses of high mountains and in abysmal valleys, he returned once again to the city of Dvin:
44:3 Անդ ապա ընդ առաջ եկեալ հասեալ լինի նմա չքնաղագեղ եւ առատամիտ եւ առատաձեռն ի պարգեւս բազմաց սպարապետն Հայոց Աշոտ՝ եղբօրորդի արքային Սմբատայ. ինքնակամ դիմագրաւ երթեալ հասեալ՝ անձնատուր լեալ եւ ի հնազանդութիւն Հագարացւոյն մտեալ:	44:3 Here he was joined by the handsome, wise and generous sparapet of Armenia, namely Ashot—the son of king Smbat’s brother Shapuh—who had voluntarily come to surrender, and submit to the Hagarite:
44:4 Թերեւս զմտաւ ածեալ նորա զփարթամաշնորհն Յուսուփ, զի գոնէ թէ եւ նա եւս ըստ նորուն սակի գտցէ շնորհս առաջի երկրորդն Փարաւոնի եւ նոյնաբար դարձուցանել բաւեսցէ ի բարիս զբարս ոստիկանին չարի ընդ ազինս գրոհի տան իւրոյ. եւ կամ թէ ըստ անրջիցն տեսութեան թերեւս ստասցի ձեռն բաւական շտեմարանել զխորհրդական ցորեանն ընդդէմ սաստկացեալ սովոյն առ ի յապրուստ կենցաղական կարգաց նորա Իսրայէլի ի սովամահ կորստենէ անտի, որ հանդերձեալն էր լինել:	44:4 Perhaps he thought that like Joseph, who was generously endowed with grace, he might possibly win over the good grace of the second Pharaoh, and be able to turn the wicked ostikan’s disposition in favor of his own house, or, in accordance with his dreams, he might store sufficient amount of the symbolic grain as a precaution against the severe famine in order to provide for the livelihood of the new Israel, and save her from starvation, which was about to come:
44:5 Բայց իբրեւ ետես զՀագարացին զայն Փարաւոն, որ ոչ գիտէր զՅովսէփ, եւ ի միտս առնոյր զհնարիմացութեան նորա զխորհուրդ առ ի չարչարել զազգս մեր, եւ զոր խնդրէր նա՝ այնմ ոչ եհաս, - զանգիտեալ այնուհետեւ ի մահացող խորամանկութենէ բռնադատին:	44:5 But when Ashot saw that the Hagarite pharaoh did not acknowledge Joseph, and realized that he was cunningly plotting to torment our people, as well as being unable to attain what he had sought, he was terrified of the raging intrigues of the tyrant:
44:6 միանգամայն իսկ եւ ի մահուան երկիւղէ, եւ ոչ ինչ ելի աղագս հատուածի գտանել մարթացեալ, - այնուհետեւ ակամայ կամօք հարկեցաւ ամենայն իրօք բերիլ ի կամս ոստիկանին արդեամբք եւ խորհրդովք եւ բանիւ մերձաւորութեամբ զկնի ընթացաբար բերեալ հետեւեալ ի կատարելութիւն կամաց նորա. սակայն եւ այնպէս՝ ոչ կարէր լիակատար յինքն յանգուցանել զվստահութիւն սրտի սաղապ եւ սնոտի խաբեբայն:	44:6 At the same time, being in danger of death, because he could not find a way of disengaging himself (from Yusuf), he was forced contrary to this wishes to submit to the will of the ostikan in everything, in deed as well as thought. In the course of their communication, he gradually yielded to him completely. Yet, even then, the fickle and base rogue could not completely win the confidence of Ashot:
44:7 Իսկ ոստիկանն առկայացեալ որջանայր ի Դվին՝ զդառնաշունչ եղանակս ձմերայնոյն ի նմա անցուցանել:	44:7 The ostikan retired to Dvin in order to spend there the severe winter season:
44:8 Իսկ ապա այնուհետեւ հարկեցայ ես խնդրել ելս հրաման թողութեան յոստիկանէն՝ որպէս ոմն երբեմն ի սանդարամետէն Պրոտիրիադայ, եւ այս ոչ թերեւս ի զանգիտելոյ յառժամանակեայ մահուանէն որ ըստ Աստուծոյ, այլ զի սակս ոսկւոյ տնօրինէր եւ ի բազմաց օգնականութենէ բազումս հատուցեալ էի զզրադատ գանձուց պարտապանութիւն, եւ այլ ոչ եւս ունէի բնաւ բաւականի հատուցանել ինչ, եւ ոչ ոք էր՝ որ օգնէր ինձ. սակս այնորիկ յայս ածայ:	44:8 Thereupon, I was compelled to ask for amnesty from the ostikan, as someone in time past was accustomed to ask the sandaramet Prodoriad. I took this course of action not so much because of my fear of death, which is something temporary for God, but because he kept me for acquiring gold, and I had frequently paid the unjust exactions with the money that I had raised with the help of many (friends). Yet, I had run short of funds, and as there was no one who could help me, I was forced to act accordingly:
44:9 Եւ վերին օգնականութիւնն արտաքս զիս առ ի նմանէն կորզեաց, որոյ ձեռք իւր լի էր արեամբ. եւ սակս ահի ծանրասրտին Փարաւոնի փախեայ ըստ Մովսիսի ի Մադիամ եւ յերկրորդն Հեզաբէլայ ըստ Եղիայի ի Սարեփթայ Սիդոնեան:	44:9 Through the heaven sent succour I was able to get myself away from the blood-stained hands of the ostikan, and out of my fear of the obstinate Pharaoh, I ran away from him and went to Madian like Moses; like Elijah I fled the second Jezabel and took refuge in Sarephta of Sidon:
44:10 Եւ վասն զի չարացն գերչաց չար հէնք սաստկապէս դեռեւս մածեալ ունէր զաշխարհս մեր. սակս այնորիկ եւ ես ըստ տէրունեանն հրամանի հալածեալ շրջեցայ ի քաղաքէ ի քաղաք ի կողմանս արեւելեայ Աղուանից առ մեծ իշխանն Սահակ երթեալ եւ առ թագաւորն նոցունց Ատրներսեհ, որ ըստ արեւելից հիւսիսոյ Կովկասու. զի եւ նոքա ի ժողովրդենէն մերմէ եւ խաշն արօտի մերոյ էին: Եւ ի նոցանէն ոչ ինչ սակաւ ծախս ռոճկաց ըստ իւրաքանչիւրումն սակի կարգէր մեզ պարտապանաբար վճարելով զպէտս ամենեցունց:	44:10 As the cruel devastations of the wicked enslavers extensively spread throughout our land, I heeded the order of the Lord and wandered from one city to the other in the region of Albania (Aghuank’) in the East, where I went to stay with the great prince Sahak, and their king Atrnerseh, who rules in the northeastern regions of the Caucasus. These people were of our fold, and flocks of our pasture. Each one of them out of obligation contributed his share of the large allowance set for me that paid for all of my needs:
44:11 Եւ անտի ելեալ գնացաք ի կողմանս Գուգարացւոց եւ անդ բնակեցաք՝ ակն ունելով փրկութեան մերոյ ի Տեառնէ:	44:11 Departing from there, we went to the region of Gugark’ and resided there, expecting our salvation from the Lord:
