14:1 Յայնմ ժամանակի ոչ սակաւ ինչ խռովութիւն լինէր ի մէջ Յունաց աշխարհին. ի կողմանս կողմանս յուզախնդիրք ելանէին, դեսպանս արձակէին, թերեւս ուրեք գտանել կարասցեն:

 14:1 In this period there was no small amount of disturbance in the land of the Greeks, as messengers were sent to various places and investigations were conducted, so that, perhaps, the women might be found somewhere:

14:2 Յայնմ ժամանակի գայր հասանէր դեսպան առ Տրդատ արքայ Հայոց մեծաց, եւ յանդիման լինէր թագաւորին ի Վաղարշապատ քաղաքի:

 14:2 Then the emissaries reached Trdat, king of Greater Armenia, coming into the king’s presence in the city of Vagharshapat:

14:3 Եւ իբրեւ մատոյց զհրովարտակն՝ առ ի ձեռանէ նորա խնդալով:

 14:3 When an emissary delivered the edict, King Trdat took it from his hand with joy:

14:4 Եւ էր պատճէն հրովարտակին աւրինակ զայս. «Ինքնակալ կայսր Դիոկղետիանոս, առ սիրելի եղբայր աթոռակից մեր Տրդատ, ողջոյն:

 14:4 The edict’s contents were these: “The emperor Caesar Diocletian to our beloved brother and colleague Trdat, greeting:

14:5 Գիտութիւն լիցի եղբայրութեանդ քում նիզակակցի մերում վասն չարեացս, որ անցանենն ընդ մեզ հանապազ ի մոլար աղանդէս քրիստոնէից. զի յամենայնի դսրովեալ լինի տէրութիւնս մեր յուխտէ նոցա, եւ արհամարհեալ լինի արքայութիւնս մեր ի նոցանէ. եւ ինչ համեստութիւն ոչ գոյ ի նոսա:

 14:5 Let your fraternity, our comrade in arms, know of the evils that continually befall us from this erring sect of the Christians: in everything our majesty is derided by their religion and our rule is despised by them, and there is no respect in them:

14:6 Զի ինքեանք զմեռեալ ոմն զխաչեալ պաշտեն, եւ փայտի երկիր պագանեն, եւ զոսկերս սպանելոցն պաշտեն, որ զիւրեանց մահն, որ վասն Աստուածոյն իւրեանց է՝ փառս եւ պատիւս համարին:

 14:6 For they worship some dead and crucified man, and adore a cross, and worship the bones of those put to death, and they consider their own death on behalf of their God to be glory and honor:

14:7 Եւ ի մերոց արդար աւրինացս դատապարտեալ լինին. վասն զի եւ զմեր զնախնիսն, զառաջին հարսն զթագաւորսն, դառնացուցեալս ձանձրացուցին. զի մեր սուրքս բթեցան, եւ նոքա ոչ զարհուրեցան ի մեռանելոյ:

 14:7 They have been condemned by our just laws because they embittered and angered our forefathers, our fathers and predecessors. Our swords have been blunted and they have not feared death:

14:8 Զի ինքեանք զհետ Հրէի ուրումն խաչելոյ մոլորեալ են, եւ զթագաւորս անպատուել ուսուցանեն, եւ գլխովին իսկ զպատկերս դիցն զաստուածոց անարգել ուսուցանեն:

 14:8 They have gone astray after some crucified Jew, and they teach dishonor for kings and complete disrespect for the images of the divine gods:

14:9 Նա եւ զլուսաւորացդ զաւրութիւն, զարեգական եւ զլուսնի աստեղաւքդ հանդերձ՝ առ ոչինչ համարին, նա եւ արարած առնեն այնր խաչելոյ:

 14:9 Similarly, they regard as naught the power of the luminaries, the sun, moon and stars, and hold them to be creatures of that crucified one:

14:10 Եւ գլխովին զպատկերս դիցն աստուածոց անարգել ուսուցանեն. եւ զաշխարհս ամենայն փոխեցին ի պաշտամանէ դիցն. մինչեւ զի եւ զկանայս անգամ յարանց եւ զարս ի կանանց կենդանւոյն մեկնեալս հեռացուցանեն:

 14:10 And they teach complete disrespect for the images of the divine gods, and dissuade the whole world from the worship of the gods. They even separate during their lifetime women from their husbands and men from their wives:

14:11 Թէպէտ եւ ազգի ազգի պատուհաս տանջանաց ի վերայ եդաք՝ առաւել եւս տոչորեալ յորդագոյնս տարածեցաւ աղանդ նոցա:

 14:11 Although we have inflicted on them all kinds of cruel punishments, their sect has become inflamed all the more and has spread only wider:

14:12 Թէպէտ եւ բիւրապատիկ ինչ արհաւիրս սաստից արկաք ի վերայ նոցա՝ ի հեղումն արեան նոցա առաւել եւս բղխեաց յորդեաց աղանդ նոցա:

 14:12 Although we have made countless terrible threats against them, at the shedding of their blood their sect has even more flourished and spread:

14:13 Դէպ եղեւ տեսանել ինձ յաղանդոյ ուսման նոցա աւրիորդ մի կոյս եւ գեղեցիկ, եւ կամեցայ առնուլ զնա ինձ կնութեան. սակայն եւ զայն իշխեցին խորամանգել յինէն:

 14:13 I chanced to see a young and beautiful girl among the following of their sect, and I wished to take her to wife. But of this too they were able to cheat me:

14:14 Եւ ոչ իբրեւ ի թագաւոր ցանկութեամբ փափաքեցին յիս. եւ ոչ ի սաստից սպառնալեաց իմոց երկեան ինչ նոքա. այլ առաւել եւս վասն աղանդոյն իւրեանց՝ աղտեղի եւ պիղծ եւ գարշ համարեցան զիս, եւ սնուցիչ նորին դայեկաւն ի կողմանս ձերոյ տէրութեանդ փախուցեալս յուղարկեցին:

 14:14 Not only were they not happy with me as king, they did not even fear my severe threats. But because of their sect they regarded me even more as stained, impure and abominable, and with their governess they have fled to the regions of your kingdom:

14:15 Արդ՝ փոյթ լիցի քեզ, եղբայր մեր, զի ուր եւ իցեն զկողմամբքդ զայդոքիւք՝ զհետս նոցա գտանել մարթասցես. եւ որ ընդ նմայն իցեն դայեկաւն հանդերձ՝ վրիժուց մահու արժանի արասցես. եւ զհրապուրեալն զչքնաղագեղն ինձ ի սոյն այսրէն յուղարկեսցես. ապա թէ հաճոյ թուեսցի քեզ տեսիլ գեղոյ նորա՝ այդրէն առ քեզ պահեսցես, զի ոչ երբեք գտաւ նման նմա ի մէջ Յունաց աշխարհիս:

 14:15 So, my brother, be quick to find their traces, wherever they may be in your parts. And take vengeance of death on whoever may be with her and their governess. And send back to me that beautiful charmer. But if her beauty pleases you, then keep her for yourself, for no one like her has ever been found in Greek lands:

14:16 Ողջ լեր դիցն պաշտամամբ ամենայն պատուով:

 14:16 Be well by the worship of the gods with all honor:
