Ագաթանգեղոս 1-8 Agatangeghos

8:1 Եւ մինչդեռ կայր նա կախեալ այնպէս՝ խաւսեցաւ զայս ամենայն. եւ գրեցին ատենակալ դպիրքն նշանագրացն. զի առ ոչինչ համարեալ զկախաղանն, եւ ոչ զբրածեծ գանին գրեաց ինչ զվիշտս. զի ջարդեալ էր զամենայն մարմինսն յոզորածեծն առնելոյ:	8:1 All this he said while hanging thus suspended. And the scribes of the tribunal wrote it down. For he paid no heed to the gallows and disregarded the blows of the bastinado. For they had broken all his body from the flagellation:
8:2 Եւ այլ եւս բազում քան զայս խաւսեցաւ՝ մինչդեռ կայր կախեալ գլխիվայր, եւ գրեցին եւ մատուցին զայն առաջի թագաւորին. քանզի էր կախեալ զեաւթն աւր զմիոյ ոտանէն:	8:2 And he said many more things while he was hanging upside down, and they wrote them down and brought them before the king, since he was hanging for seven days from one foot:
8:3 Եւ յետ այսորիկ ետ հրաման, եւ իջուցին զնա անտի:	8:3 Then he gave a command and they brought him down:
8:4 Սկսաւ խաւսել ընդ նմա թագաւորն Հայոց Տրդատ եւ ասէ. «Զի՞նչ ունիս, եւ կամ զի՞նչ եդեր ի մտի, լինե՞լ կցորդ կենաց իմոց, որպէս աշխատեցարն ընդ իս ի մանկութենէ վաստակովք, եթէ մեռանել տարապարտուց, ի տարապարտ խորհուրդս ընդունայնութեան մտացդ՝ ուր կասդ իսկ:	8:4 Trdat, king of Armenia, began to speak with him, saying: “What is your opinion and what decision have you made? To share in my life just as you have labored with me from a young age; or to die vainly in the inane thoughts of your foolish mind:
8:5 Նա պատասխանի ետ եւ ասէ. «Փութամ ես ելանել ի մարմնոյս, եւ առնուլ զկեանսն յաւիտենից. այլ տո՛ւր հրաման վասն իմ որպէս եւ կամիս, զի՛նչ մահ եւ հրամայես ի վերայ իմ:	8:5 He replied and note: “I am anxious to leave this body [cf. II Cor. 5.8] and receive eternal life. But command in my case as you wish, whatever death you impose on me:
8:6 Ետ պատասխանի արքայ եւ ասէ. «Ոչ տամ զայդ պարգեւ՝ եթէ լիցի քեզ վախճան մահու երագ երագ եւ հանգչել ի տանջանաց, զոր կոչես դու կեանս յաւիտենից:	8:6 The king replied and note: “I shall not give you that reward, for you to receive death quickly and have respite from tortures, which you call eternal life:
8:7 այլ կտտել զքեզ յերկար, զի ոչ լիցի հնար քեզ երագ մեռանել, այլ տանջել զքեզ յերկար եւ պահանջել ի քէն զանարգանս դիցն եւ զյամառութիւնդ քո, որ ոչ կամեցար պաշտել զնոսա:	8:7 But I shall cause you to be tormented for a long time to prevent you from dying quickly, and shall rather torture you at length and exact retribution from you for your insults to the gods and your obstinacy in being unwilling to worship them:
8:8 Եւ ետ հրաման բերել կոճեղս փայտից, եւ առնել ըստ ոլոքի խոտցաց ոտից նորա. եւ դնել եւ պնդել ուժգին առատկաւք, մինչեւ իջանէր արիւնն ընդ ծայրս ոտից մատանց նորա. եւ ասէ. «Գիտիցե՞ս կամ զգայցե՞ս ինչ արդեաւք զցաւսդ:	8:8 He commanded that blocks of wood be brought and fixed to his shins and feet and tightened with strong cords until the blood ran down to the tips of his toes. And he note: “Do you feel or sense your pain at all:
8:9 Նա պատասխանի ետ եւ ասէ. «Տուաւ ինձ զաւրութիւն, քանզի խնդրեցի ես յԱրարչէն արարածոց, որ է ճարտարապետ եւ Արարիչ ամենայնի՝ որ երեւի եւ որ ոչն երեւի:	8:9 And he replied and note: “I have been given strength [cf. Acts 1.8], because I asked the Creator of creation, who is the architect and creator of everything visible and invisible:
8:10 Եւ հրամայեաց, եւ լուծին զնա յայնմանէ:	8:10 And he commanded, and they lost him:
8:11 Եւ ետ հրաման բերել բեւեռս երկաթիս եւ վարել ընդ ներբանս ոտից նորա. եւ առեալ զձեռանէ նորա աստի եւ անտի՝ ընթացուցանէին զնա յայս կոյս եւ յայն կոյս. եւ արիւնն հոսէր իջանէր յոտից անտի, եւ ոռոգանէր զերկիրն սաստիկ յոյժ:	8:11 And he commanded iron nails to be brought and driven through the soles of his feet. They took him by the hand and made him run this way and that. And the blood ran out from his feet and watered the earth in great abundance:
8:12 Եւ դարձեալ ասէ ցնա. «Ա՞յդ են աներեւոյթ արարածք Աստուածոյն քո, զոր դուն տեսանես:	8:12 And again, he said to him: “Are these the invisible creations of your God, which you now see:
8:13 Նա ասէ. «Բարիոք ասացեր, եթէ այս իցեն աներեւոյթ արարածք Աստուծոյն իմոյ. վասն զի Սերմանի տկարութեամբ՝ եւ յառնէ զաւրութեամբ. սերմանի անարգութեամբ՝ եւ յառնէ փառաւք:	8:13 He replied: “Rightly have you said that these are the creations of my God, because ’it is sown in weakness and rises up in power; it is sown in dishonor, and rises up in glory’:
8:14 Զի Լալով լան՝ որք տանիցին զսերմանիս իւրեանց, այսինքն են վիշտք եւ չարչարանք, որ հասանեն մեզ որ վասն աստուածպաշտութեանն են:	8:14 For ’they weep indeed, who will take away their seeds" [Ps. 125.6a] - that is toil and torment which come upon us for the sake of piety:
8:15 այլ յորժամ որայն ի հունձս եկեալ մատուսցէ զատոքութեանն բերրի զպտուղ սերմանողացն՝ ընդ նմին եւ զցնծութիւն բերկրութեան ուրախութեանց ամենայնի բերէ:	8:15 But when the germ of wheat comes to harvest it will offer to the sowers the ripe fruit of its maturity, and likewise it brings the joy of happy fruitfulness to all:
8:16 Ասէ թագաւորն. «Բախեցէ՛ք զաման լալոյ արտասուացն. թող եկեսցէ դմա ուրախութիւն:	8:16 The king note: “Break the vessel of these tears of weeping; let joy come to him:
8:17 Եւ հանին նմա կռուփս ի գլուխն, հարկանելով զնա անհնարին:	8:17 They buffeted him on the head, striking him cruelly:
8:18 Սկսաւ հարցանել զնա եւ ասէ. «Ա՞յդ է ուրախութիւնն:	8:18 He began to question him and note: “Is this happiness:
8:19 Եւ նա ասէ. «Այո՛ այս է. զի թէ ոչ քրտնեսցի մշակն ի տապ խորշակի ջերմոյն արեգակնակէզ լինելով՝ ոչ ըմբռնէ զարդիւնս շայեկանս ուրախութեան պտղոցն ձմերայնւոյն հանգստեան:	8:19 He replied: “Yes, it is. For unless the laborer sweats in the torrid heat of the shining sun, he will not gain the true reward of joyful fruit, rest in the winter:
8:20 Ետ պատասխանի արքայ եւ ասէ. «Դու աստէն իսկ աշխատեա՛ց ի մշակութիւն տանջանացդ, յորում կասդ:	8:20 The king answered and note: “You indeed have labored here at the toil of these torments in which you find yourself:
8:21 Եւ ետ հրաման բերել աղ եւ բորակ եւ բարկ քացախ, եւ ընկենուլ զնա յորսայս, եւ դնել զգլուխ նորա ի հիւսանց մամուլս եւ դնել փող եղեգան ի քիթս նորա, եւ արկանել զայն ընդ քիթս նորա:	8:21 And he ordered salt and borax and rough vinegar to be brought, and for him to be turned on his back, his head to be placed in a carpenter’s vice, and a reed tube to be put in his nose, and this liquid to be poured down his nose:
8:22 Եւ յետ այսորիկ ետ հրաման, եւ բերին պարկս աւդենիս մեծամեծս եւ լցին զայն մոխրով հնոցի. եւ արարին թուլագոյն, զի մի՛ կարի լի իցէ, վասն տուրեւառ շնչոյն, զի հարկանելով ընդ խելսն վտանգեսցէ զնա:	8:22 After that he commanded and they brought a large sack of sheepskin and filled it with cinders from a furnace. They made it not quite full in order to let him breathe, but so that his brain was affected and he would be thus tormented:
8:23 Եւ ագուցին զայն ի գլուխ նորա, եւ կապեցին զբերան պարկին ի փողս նորա. եւ կաց նովաւ աւուրս վեց:	8:23 They fixed this over his head and tied the mouth of the sack round his neck. And he remained thus for six days:
8:24 Եւ յետ այսորիկ ետ հրաման, եւ ածին առաջի թագաւորին, եւ ի բաց հանին զպարկն ի գլխոյն:	8:24 After that he commanded and they led him before the king and removed the sack from his head:
8:25 Սկսաւ խաւսել թագաւորն եւ ասէ. «Ուստի՞ գաս. թերեւս յարքայութենէ անտի գայցես զոր ասէին:	8:25 The king began to speak, and note: “Whence come you? Perhaps you come from the kingdom which you mentioned:
8:26 Ետ պատասխանի Գրիգորիոս եւ ասէ. «Այո՛, ի՛սկ յարքայութենէ զոր ասէի՝ անտի գամ. վասն զի արժանի արար զիս Աստուած զայս ամենայն կրել յանձին վասն անուան իւրոյ:	8:26 Gregory replied and note: “Yes, I indeed come from the kingdom of which I spoke. For God made me worthy to endure all this for his name’s sake:
8:27 Արդարեւ իսկ կայ մնայ ինձ արքայութիւնն որ ոչ անցանէ. փոխանակ մոխրոյն՝ անթառամ ծաղիկքն, եւ փոխանակ քացախոյն՝ անսպառ ուրախութիւնքն:	8:27 Truly there awaits me the kingdom that passes not away - instead of cinders, unfading [cf. I Pet. 1.4] flowers; instead of the vinegar, inexhaustible joy:
