17:0 The rebellion of some princes in the Greek sector and their death. Enemies from the Thracian side threaten the Greek empire:

17:1 Ապստամբէին դարձեալ ի կողմանցն Յունաց սեպուհքն Վահեւունիք - Սամուէլն զոր ասացի եւ Սարգիս եւ Վարազ Ներսէհ եւ Ներսէս եւ Վստամ եւ Թէոդորոս Տրպատունի: Եւ խորհէին սպանանել զկորատորն՝ մինչդեռ նա նստէր ի ջերմկի՝ բժշկել ի հիւանդութենէ, մերձ ի քաղաքն Կարնոյ: Իսկ նա ուստեմն իրազեկ եղեալ՝ փախստական ի քաղաքն անկանէր. եւ նոցա արշաւեալ ի ջերմուկն՝ ոչ դիպան նմա:

17:1 On the Greek side the Vahewuni nobles rebelled - Samuēl whom I mentioned above, Sargis, Varaz Nersēh, Nersēs, Vstam, and T’ēodoros Trpatuni. They planned to kill the curator while he was staying at a spa to be cured of an illness, near the city of Karin. But he learned of it somehow and fled for refuge into the city. They attacked the spa, but did not encounter him:

17:2 Ապա աւարեալ զոր ինչ ի դիմի հարկանէր՝ առին աւար բազում, եւ գնացին յերկիրն ամուր Կորդուաց. եւ կամեցեալ զամուրսն զայն ունել:

17:2 Then they plundered whatever they came across, took much booty and went to the inaccessible land of Korduk’ intending to hold those fortresses:

17:3 Ապա զհետ նոցա լինէին զաւրն Յունաց, Հերակղ զաւրավար եւ Համազասպ Մամիկոնեան. եւ նոցա հասեալ մերձ յամուրն՝ անցին զգետովն՝ որ կոչի Ջերմաց ընդ կամուրջն, որ անուանեալ կոչի Դանիէլի կամուրջ, եւ ի բաց ընկեցին զկամուրջն եւ ամրացեալք յանձուկն պահէին զտեղի կամրջին: Կային առ գետեզերբն, եւ խորհէին՝ թէ զինչ արժան է առնել:

17:3 The Greek army pursued them, with the general Heraclius and Hamazasp Mamikonean. When they (the fugitives) had arrived close to the fortress, they crossed the river called Jerm by the bridge which is called the bridge of Daniel. They destroyed the bridge, and posted themselves at the defile to defend the site of the bridge. They (the Greeks) stopped at the river-bank and pondered what they should do:

17:4 Եւ իբրեւ ոչ գտին հուն, եւ կամեցան դառնալ ի բաց՝ յանկարծակի ի դիմի հարկանէր սոցա երէց մի ուղեւոր. եւ կալեալ նոցա զերէցն՝ ասեն նմա. «Ցոյց մեզ զհուն գետոյս, ապա թէ ոչ սպանցուք զքեզ»: Եւ նորա առեալ զզաւրն՝ եցոյց զհունն ի ներքոյ անդ: Եւ անցեալ զաւրն ամենայն զգետովն՝ ոմանք ի թիկանց զամուրն պահէին, եւ ոմանք զկամրջախելն եւ զձորաբերանս ունէին, եւ այլք մտեալ յամուրն՝ ընդ նոսա մարտնչէին, եւ չարաչար լինէր կոտորածն. բայց սակայն սպառէին զնոսա:

17:4 Since they did not find a ford, they were intending to return, when unexpectedly a travelling priest encountered them. They seized the priest and said to him: ’Show us the ford over the river, otherwise we shall kill you. ’ He led the army and pointed out the ford below. The whole army crossed the ford. Some of them guarded the fortress from the rear, some held the bridgehead and the entrance to the valley, while others entered the fortress and attacked them. There was a dreadful slaughter, but they managed to exterminate them:

17:5 Արդ՝ զՆերսէս եւ զՎստամ եւ զՍամուէլ սպանին ի պատերազմին, որք ոչ սակաւ արարին շուրջ զնովաւ զկոտորածն. բայց զՍարգիս եւ զՎարազ Ներսէհ ձերբակալ արարին հանդերձ այլովք ոմամբք. եւ տարեալ ի Կարնոյ քաղաք, եւ ապա գլխատեցին: Որ ի ժամ գլխատելոյն ասէր Վարազ Ներսէհ ցՍարգիս. «Վիճակ արկցուք, թէ զո առաջի սպանցեն:

17:5 In the battle they killed Nersēs and Vstam and Samuēl, who made no little carnage around them. But Sargis and Varaz Nersēh they captured with some others. They brought them to the city of Karin and then cut off their heads. At the moment of decapitation Varaz Nersēh said to Sargis: ’Let us cast lots, whom they will kill first. ’:

17:6 Իսկ Սարգիս ասէր. «Ես այր ծեր եմ եւ մեղաւոր, աղաչեմ զձեզ, զպարգեւսդ այդ ինձ շնորհեցէք. թող զի փոքր մի հանգեայց, եւ ոչ իսկ տեսից զմահս ձեր»: Ապա զնա յառաջ գլխատեցին: Բայց Թէոդորոսն Տրպատունի փրծեալ փախստական գնաց ի դուռն արքային Պարսից: Եւ նորա կապել հրամայեաց եւ տալ ի ձեռս թշնամեացն, զի մեռցի. եւ սաստիկ աղետիւք վտանգեցոյց:

17:6 But Sargis note: ’I am an old man and a sinner; I beg you grant me this gift. Let me have this small comfort that I do not see your death. ’ Then they cut off his head first. But T’ēodoros Trpatuni escaped and fled to the court of the Persian king. He ordered him to be bound and handed over to his enemies to be put to death. And with great cruelty he had him tortured:

17:7 Եւ թշնամիքն որ էին ի Թրակացւոց կողմանէն, աւար առին զթագաւորութիւնն, անհուն զաւրացն բազմութեամբ ի ձեռն հապճեպ պատերազմացն զթագաւորութիւնն եւ զազգս Հռովմայեցւոց տէրութեանն կամեցեալ բառնալ, եւ թագաւորութեանն տիրել անձամբ ի վերայ թագաւորանիստ քաղաքին:

17:7 The enemies from the region of Thrace plundered the kingdom. With their enormous multitude of troops, through rapid campaigns they wished to eliminate the kingdom and the nation of the Roman empire, and to rule themselves over the royal capital:
