3:1 Արդ՝ ի լնուլ վաթսներորդի վեցերորդի աւուրն, ընդ այգուն առաւաւտանալն, մատուցեալ իշխանքն թագաւորաւն եւ նախարարաւքն եւ խառնիճաղանճ ամբոխիւն հանդերձ, նա եւ կանանւոյն ժողովեալ մատաղ մանկտովն անմեղաւք, երամ երամ եւ դասադասեալք անկանէին առաջի սրբոյն Գրիգորի, աղաչէին եւ խնդրէին զբժշկութիւն գտանել հարուածոցն պատուհասին հասելոյ. քանզի հարեալք էին բարկութեան գաւազանաւն յարդար դատաստանէն:

3:1 When the sixty-sixth day came round, at the dawn of morning, the nobles and king and princes and the common people, with the crowd of women and young children, approached and fell down in flocks before saint Gregory, beseeching and begging for healing from the torments which had fallen on them as punishment, because they had been struck in a just judgment by the rod of God’s anger:

3:2 Մանաւանդ թագաւորն, զի էր նա փոխեալ ի կերպարանս աղբեւայոյզ խոզաց. քանզի թաւացեալ էին առ հասարակ ամենայն մարմինքն, եւ ընդ անդամս ոսկերացն բուսեալ էր խոզանաստեւ իբրեւ զմեծամեծ վարազաց վայրենեաց. եւ եղնգունք ծայրից մատանց ոտիցն եւ ձեռացն կճղակացեալք էին իբրեւ զգետնաբիր եւ զարմատակեր կնճացն:

3:2 Especially the king, because he had been changed into the form of a wallowing pig. For his whole body had become hairy, and on his limbs, bristles had grown like those of great wild boars. And the nails of his hands and feet had hardened like the claws of beasts that dig the earth or eat roots:

3:3 Նա եւ պատկեր երեսացն դիմացն շրջեալ էր ի պատկեր եւ ի կնճիթ գոճանացն յեղեգան բնակելոց. իբրեւ յիւրոց ի գազանամիտ բարուցն բնութենէ եւ ի վարուց՝ ի թագաւորութեանն շքոյ սաստկութենէ անկեալ, շրջեալ ի տեսիլ նմանութեան անասուն խոտակեր գազանաց. եւ շրջէր ի մէջ գազանացն ի ներքս յեղեգանն, կորուսեալ ի միջոյ մարդկանէ:

3:3 Similarly, the appearance of his face had turned into the likeness of the hard snout of an animal living among reeds. Because of the beast-like nature of his way of life he had fallen from the honor of his throne, and he roamed about in the likeness of pasturing beasts [cf. Ps. 48.13] among the animals in the reeds, lost to the society of men:

3:4 Իսկ իբրեւ եկն եհաս ելեալ ի բանդէ վիրապին խոստովանողն Քրիստոսի Գրիգորիոս, հասանէր ի տեղի վկայելոցն՝ իբրեւ ի տեսչութենէն Աստուծոյ ի մի վայր ամենեքեան ժողովեալ՝ այսամտեալք ամենեքին, ի տեղին հասեալք յայտնեցան:

3:4 When Gregory, the confessor of Christ, had come forth from the dungeon-pit and reached the place of the martyrs, as if by the providence of God all those possessed by demons gathered together in that same place:

3:5 Եւ թագաւորն խոզացեալ՝ մեծաձայն ճչէր, կանչէր, խանչէր բոհբոհելով, փրփրացեալ, դիզացեալ, կնճթակերպ երեսաւքն, լեալ ի նմանութիւն չորքոտանւոյ, ընթացեալ յեղեգնաբնակ երամէ գազանացն ի միջոյ՝ հասանէր յայն տեղի:

3:5 And the king, in swinish form, cried out in a loud voice, he called out, grunted and slobbered and foamed at the mouth in his snout like face, and in the likeness of a four-footed beast ran from the boars’ reedy pasture to the same spot:

3:6 Իսկ երանելին Գրիգորիոս յաղաւթս կացեալ՝ խնդրէր յամենապարգեւէն Աստուծոյ առ մի նուագ՝ ոչ զկերպարանացն հարուածելոց առողջութիւն, այլ զմտացն ունկնդրութիւն վարդապետութեանն, զգաստանալ, առնուլ ի միտ զասացեալսն Աստուծոյ պատգամացն:

3:6 But blessed Gregory prayed for a brief while, begging from the all-bountiful God not healing for the various torments but attention to his teaching, that they might come to their senses and comprehend the message of God’s words:

3:7 Եւ լեալ բժշկութիւն այսչափ միայն - քաջ լսել եւ ի միտ առնուլ եւ համարձակ խաւսել:

3:7 And they had just enough healing to be able to hear, comprehend and speak freely:
|
3:8 Եւ մինչեւ ի վաթսուն եւ ի վեց աւրն զաւուրս վարդապետութեանն՝ ի նոյն կայր կերպարանս, ձորձապատեալ, պատատեալ, ի մէջ բազմամբոխ աշխարհաժողով հրապարակացն կուտակելոց մարդկանն:

3:8 And all through the sixty-six days of instruction the king remained in the same form, though wrapped in garments, in the midst of the great crowd of the assembled populace:

3:9 Իբրեւ սկսան թաւալել անկանել առաջի նորա եւ խնդրել բժշկութիւն, - քանզի թագաւորն զատեալ էր կերպարանաւքն ի մարդկային բնութենէ ձաղածանակ տեսլեամբն, բայց միայն ի բանիմաստ խաւսարանացն եւ լսելոյն. - իսկ նա յետ աղաչանացն տուեալ պատասխանի ասէ ցնոսա, եթէ «Եւ ես ընդ ձեզ իբրեւ զմի ի ձէնջ խնդրեցից զձեր աւգուտն, եւ դուք սրտի մտաւք խնդրեցէ՛ք զձեր բժշկութիւնն, քանզի մարդասէր Աստուածութիւնն ողորմեսցի ձեզ:

3:9 When they began to wallow and fall before him and to ask for healing - because the king had lost his natural human form for that ridiculous appearance, except for the ability to speak and hear - then after their supplications he replied and said to them: “I too like one of you will seek your advantage. And do you sincerely request healing, because the benevolent deity will have mercy upon you:

3:10 Բայց փութացարո՛ւք շինեցէ՛ք զվկայարանսն, զի հանգուսցուք զվկայսս Աստուծոյ, զի եւ սոքա զձեզ հանգուսցեն ի տանջանաց պատուհասիցդ. եւ ապրեսջիք յահագին եւ ի դառն պատրաստեալ հանդերձեալ խոստացեալ դատաստանացն, եւ արժանի լիջիք արքայութեանն Քրիստոսի:

3:10 But hasten and build chapels in order to give repose to the martyrs of God, that they in turn may give you respite from the torments of your punishment, and that you may be saved from the terrible and bitter judgments that have been promised and prepared for the future, and that you may become worthy of the kingdom of Christ:

3:11 Իսկ նոցա խնդրեալ, զի փութով հրամայեսցէ, որպէս եւ կամիցի զի՛նչ եւ կամիցի առնել:

3:11 Then they begged him quickly to command as he might wish and whatever he might wish to be done:
|
3:12 Իսկ նորա տեսիլ պատմեալ նոցա՝ ասէ:

3:12 But he related to them a vision as follows:
