27:0 Another battle of Smbat with the enemy in Taparastan and his victory. Smbat is more greatly honoured than all the marzpans. Smbat’s coming to Armenia. The rebuilding of the church of St. Gregory at Dvin. The Catholicosate of Abraham Ṙshtuni:

27:1 Եւ եղեւ ի գալ միւս ամի՝ ժողովէին ամենայն գունդքն թշնամեաց, եւ երթեալ բանակէին ի Տապարաստան գաւառի. գումարէ եւ Սմբատ զամենայն զաւրսն իւր եւ ի դիմի հարկանի նոցա պատերազմաւ: Եւ մատնեաց տէր Աստուած զզաւրս թշնամեացն ի ձեռն Սմբատայ, եւ սատակեաց զամենայն սրով սուսերի. եւ ապրեալքն գնացին փախստական ի տեղիս իւրեանց:

27:1 When the next year came round, all the forces of the enemy gathered together and went and camped in the province of Taparastan. Smbat also gathered his own troops and attacked them in battle. The Lord God delivered the enemies’ army into Smbat’s hand. He put them all to the sword, and the survivors fled to their own regions:

27:2 Իսկ այնք, որ էին ընդ նոսա, խնդրեցին երդումն եւ պայման եւ եկին կացին առաջի Սմբատայ, եւ Յովսէփն այն ընդ նոսա: Ապա ունէր Յովսէփ զգիւտն իւր առաջի նորա եւ պատմէ զտեսիլն, եւ բազում նշանս, զոր արարեալ էր ի մէջ բարբարոսացն, պատմէր: Յայնժամ յարուցեալ Սմբատ ծունր կրկնէր առաջի նորա, եւ առեալ յինքն՝ կնքէր զինքն նովաւ. եւ տայր ի ձեռն Միհրուի ուրումն առն երանելւոյ, զոր եւ կարգեալ էր ի վերայ տանն իւրոյ հաւատարիմ եւ կամակատար, որ ի տանէ Դիմաքսենից, եւ տայր յեկեղեցին զոր ունէին երիցունք դրան նորա:

27:2 Then those with them requested an oath and pact, and came before Smbat; and that Yovsēp’ was with them. Now Yovsēp’ held his discovery in front of him (Smbat), described the vision, and told of the many signs which had been worked among the barbarians. Then Smbat stood up and genuflected before it; taking hold of it, he signed himself with it. He entrusted it to a certain blessed man, Mihru, whom he had put in charge of his own house as a reliable servant; he was from the house of the Dimak’seank’. He gave it to the church which the priests of his house served:

27:3 Յայնժամ առաքէ առ նա թագաւորն հրովարտակ մեծապէս գոհութեամբ, պատուով մեծացուցանէ ի վեր քան զամենայն մարզպանս իւրոյ տէրութեան առնելով, եւ զամենայն անաւթս մատռուակացն առաքէ նմա ոսկի, եւ հանդերձս թագաւորականս, արտախուրակս ոսկեզաւծս եւ զանգապանակ ակամբք եւ մարգարտովք կարգեալ. եւ զորդի նորա, որոյ անունն էր Վարազտիրոց, զոր էր սնուցեալ նորա իբրեւ զմի յորդւոց իւրոց եւ էր մեծարու ամենայն դրանն արքունի՝ կարգէր ի մատռուակութեան, պաշտել զգինի անձին արքայի:

27:3 Then the king sent him a letter with much thanks, greatly honoured him and promoted him above all the marzpans of his kingdom. He sent to him all (kinds of) serving vessels in gold, royal robes, gilded diadems, stockings set with precious stones and pearls. His son, called Varaztirots’, whom he had raised as one of his own sons and was respected by the whole royal court, he appointed as butler, to serve wine to the king himself:

27:4 Եւ կալաւ Սմբատ զմարզպանութիւն աշխարհին այնորիկ ամս [Ը]: Յետ այսորիկ հրաման հասանէ կոչել զնա բազում մեծարանաւք ի դուռն արքունի, եւ հրամայէ երթալ տեսանել զերկիր իւր՝ յամի ութ եւ տասներորդի իւրոյ թագաւորութեանն:

27:4 Smbat held the marzpanate of that country for eight years. After that an order came summoning him with much honour to the royal court. The king bade him visit his own country in the [18th] year of his reign:

27:5 Արդ՝ խնդրէ նա հրաման յարքայէն շինել զեկեղեցի սրբոյն Գրիգորի, որ էր ի Դուին քաղաքի: Եւ վասն զի վախճանեալ էր Մովսէս կաթուղիկոսն երանելի, եւ ոչ գոյր վարդապետ ի տեղւոջն յայնմիկ՝ եւ եւս փութացաւ խնդրել յարքայէն հրաման. եւ հասեալ հրաման յերկիր իւր՝ առնէ խնդիր վասն աթոռոյն մեծի, զի կարգեսցեն ի վերայ նորա տեսուչ խնամող եկեղեցւոյն եւ առաջնորդ փրկութեան իւրոյ:

27:5 Then he requested permission from the king to rebuild the church of St. Gregory which was in the city of Dvin. Because the late Catholicos Movsēs had died, and there was no vardapet in that place, he hastily sought permission from the king. When the permission reached his country, he then made a request concerning the supreme cathedra, that they might appoint to it a bishop as guardian of the church and primate of its salvific role:

27:6 Եւ նստուցին զԱբրահամ զՌշտունեաց եպիսկոպոսն յաթոռ հայրապետութեան: Ապա սկսան արկանել հիմն եկեղեցւոյն. ժողովեաց ճարտարապետս քարի, եւ կացոյց ի վերայ նոցա հաւատարիմ գործակալս, եւ հրաման ետ փութանակի հասուցանել ի կատարումն:

27:6 They installed Abraham, the bishop of Ṙshtunik’, on the patriarchal throne. Then they began to lay the foundation of the church. He gathered master-stonemasons and set over them reliable superintendents, and commanded them to bring it to a rapid conclusion:

27:7 Եւ գրեալ գիր ամբաստանութեան բերդակալին եւ մարզպանին առ արքայ, եթէ «Կարի մերձ է առ բերդն, եւ վնասակար է ի թշնամւոյ»: Հրաման հասեալ յարքայէ, եթէ «Բերդն քակեսցի, եւ եկեղեցին անդրէն ի նմին տեղւոջն շինեսցի»: Ամէն:

27:7 The commander of the fortress and the marzpan wrote a letter of complaint to the king, declaring: ’It is very close to the fortress and there is danger from an enemy. ’ The order came back from the king: ’Let the fortress be demolished, and the church built in that very spot. ’ Amen:
