43:0 Եւ արդ` հասեալ ի դուռնն նենգաւոր իշխանն Սիւնեաց, եւ տեսեալ նախ զաւագանի դրանն արքունի` մտանէր եւ առաջի թագաւորին Յազկերտի. ընդունէին զնա թագաւորն եւ ամենայն մեծամեծքն արքունի առ վայր մի մեծարանաւք եւ շքեղութեամբ:

 43:0 The duplicitous prince of Siwnik’ reached the court, and after first seeing the court nobility, he went into the presence of king Yazkert. For the moment, the king and all the grandees at court received him with respect and pomp:

43:1 Զի թէպէտ եւ գիտէին զվնաս նորա եւ զերդումն, եւ զուխտն զոր ուխտեալ էր նենգութեամբ ընդ սրբոյն Վարդանայ եւ ընդ ամենայն իշխանս աշխարհին Հայոց, յաղագս զնոսա կորուսանելոյ եւ զինքն հաւատարիմ ցուցանելոյ` սակայն ոչ ինչ զգացուցեալ տային գիտել նմա:

 43:1 Although they knew about his harmfulness, the vow and oath which he had treacherously sworn with saint Vardan and with all the princes of the land of Armenia—to destroy the others and to show himself as loyal—(the Iranians) in no way let (Vasak) know this:

43:2 այլ լռութեամբ որպէս զանգէտս պատուէին զնա` որպէս զայր հաւատարիմ եւ զբարեգործ, մինչեւ ածեալ հասուցանէին ի դուռն զսուրբ քահանայսն Աստուծոյ եւ զաւագս ի տանուտերացն Հայոց, ի սեպհացն` որ ապստամբն էին, ընդ նոսին եւ ի տոհմէն Մամիկոնէից եւ Կամսարականաց եւ յայլ ազգաց զտղայ մանկունսն ապստամբացն, զորս նախագոյն տարեալ նենգաւորին կացուցանէր առաջի հազարապետին Միհրներսեհի եւ այլ աւագանւոյ դրանն:

 43:2 Rather, remaining silent about this, as though they did not know, (the Iranians) honored him as a loyal and benevolent man. (This situation continued) until they brought to court the blessed priests of God, the senior tanuters of Armenia and the sepuhs who had revolted, as well as the boys from the Mamikonean tohm and the Kamsarakans and from others azgs, the children of the rebels whom the treacherous (Vasak) led first before the hazarapet Mihrnerseh and the other court nobility:

43:3 Եւ անաւրէն հազարապետն Արեաց հրամայէր նախ զքահանայսն ածել զառաջեաւ. եւ հարցանէր զսուրբ երէցն Արածայ զՍամուէլ, եւ զնորին զհոգւոյ որդին, զսուրբ սարկաւագն զԱբրահամ, որոյ զկրակն անցուցեալ էր զԱրտաշատու. «Ո՞րպիսի համարձակութեամբ եւ ո՞յր հրամանաւ իշխեցէք գործել զայդպիսի մահապարտութեան գործ, եւ ոչ ածէք զմտաւ զահ թագաւորաց եւ զերկիւղ իշխանաց, եւ այնպիսի մեծ կրակի իշխեցէք ձգել զձեռս ձեր. զի թէ մարդոյ եղեալ էր այնպիսի յանդգնութիւն` համայն արժանի մահու էր գործն, թող թէ յաստուածսն:

 43:3 The impious hazarapet of the Aryans first ordered that the priests be brought before him. He asked the blessed presbyter of Arac, Samuel, and his spiritual son, the blessed deacon Abraham who had extinguished the Artashat fire: “With what boldness and under whose orders did you dare to do such a deed, which is worthy of death, and to put your hands forth to such a great fire, having no fear of kings or princes? For when such a deed is perpetrated against a man, it merits death, to say nothing about perpetrating it against the gods:

43:4 Եւ լուեալ զայս սրբոցն երկոցունց, տեառն Սամուէլի եւ Աբրահամայ` ետուն պատասխանի միաբանութեամբ, էր ինչ որ ստուգախաւսութեամբ, եւ էր որ եպերանաւք, ցուցանելով զիւրեանց աներկիւղ համարձակութիւնն եւ լսողացն զանզգայաբար հարցմամբն ծիծաղելով:

 43:4 When the two holy men, the lord Samuel and Abraham, heard this, they replied in unity, demonstrating their fearless bravery with accurate speech and contempt, ridiculing the senseless question of the listeners:

43:5 ասեն. «Երկնչել զերկիւղ զարժանն եւ զարդար ի թագաւորաց եւ իշխանաց` նոյն աւրէնքն մեր հրամայեն. բայց զԱստուծոյ երկիւղն փոխանակել ընդ երկիւղի մարդոյ` ոչ առնումք յանձն:

 43:5 Our laws also order us to fear the worthy and just kings and princes. But we refuse to replace the fear of God with fear of a man:

43:6 Իսկ յաղագս կրակիդ որ ասէք ցմեզ, թէ սպանէք` մեք զկրակն ոչ գան հարկանելով եւ ոչ չարաչար խոշտանգանս ածելով նմա` վնասեցաք ինչ. այլ հայեցեալ ի ժամանակ ամբոխին եւ ի սպասաւորաց վատթարութիւնս, որք առ ոչինչ համարեալ զերկիւղ աստուածոցն իւրեանց, թողին զնա որպէս զոչինչ արհամարհանաւք, եւ ինքեանք գնացին. եւ մեր տեսեալ միա՛յն զկրակն, առանց մարդոյ մոխրեալ, եւ այնպէս կացեալ ի բազում աւուրս առանց ուրուք խնամ տանելոյ` առաք զմոխիրն հեղաք ի բաց. վասն զի զայն ի նորին սպասաւորացն տեսանէաք հանապազաւր, կրելով ցանկ զմոխիրն եւ հեղլով յերկիր:

 43:6 And as for the fire which, you say, we killed, in no way did we harm it either by beating it or by wicked torture. Rather, seek the misdeed in the mob and the attendants there at the time, who had no fear of their gods, and who scornfully abandoned it and departed. We saw no man, but only the fire, in ashes. And so, it remained thus for many days without anyone giving it any attention, until we took the ashes and extinguished it. For we had always observed its attendants carrying the strewn ashes and dumping them on the ground:

43:7 Բայց որպէս չարախաւսացն մերոց իմացուցեալ է ձեզ զմէնջ, թէ առեալ զկրակն ի ջուր վարեցին` յայդմ բնաւ իսկ չէ արժան արդարադատութեանդ ցասնուլ մեզ եւ առ մահապարտս ունել, այլ գովութեան եւ պատուի առնել արժանի:

 43:7 But as for (the information) given to you about us—that we took the fire and extinguished it with water—it in no way befits your fairness to become enraged with us and to put us to death. Rather, (our actions) deserve praise and honor:

43:8 Զի թէ արդարեւ ըստ ձեր բանիցդ, զոր լուեալ է յուսուցչացն ձերոց` խաւսիք, եւ ճշմարիտ է վկայութիւնն այն, եւ զի եղբայր է ջուր կրակի` մեր ոչ միայն զի անցուցեալ չէ եւ վնասեալ զկրակն, այլ եւ մեծարեալ է զնա եւ բարի արարեալ:

 43:8 For indeed according to your doctrine, which we have heard from your teachers, you have said, and it is true, that water is the brother of fire. Not only did we not extinguish or harm the fire, but we were honoring it, and doing it a good turn:

43:9 Արդ` թէ արժանի մահու են` այնոքիկ են արժանի, որ թողին եւ արհամարհեցին զկրակն եւ գնացին, եւ ոչ մեք, որ առաք եւ յեղբայր նորին տուաք, զի պահեսցէ սիրելապէս եւ բազում շքեղութեամբ, եւ ի ժամու տացէ ի բաց:

 43:9 If any are worthy of death, it is the ones who scorned and abandoned the fire, and not we who took it and gave it to its brother so that it would be kept affectionately and with much pomp, entrusted to it forever:
