11:0 Յաղագս դարձի իշխանացն անդրէն յերկիրն Հայոց, որք երթեալք էին առ կայսրն Վաղէս, զի եկին դարձան առ տէրն իւրեանց Արշակ. եւ կամ ո՛րպէս տրտմեալ թագաւորին Արշակայ ընդ կայսրն, ո՛րչափ ինչ վնասեաց ասպատակաւ կողմանց իշխանութեան թագաւորութեան Յունաց:

11:0 The princes return to the country of Armenia and to king Arshak from the Byzantine emperor Vaghes. They had been sent previously along with the patriarch Nerses. And how the indignant king Arshak of Armenia conducted punishing raids into Byzantine territory:

11:1 Այսոքիկ են իշխանքն, որք չոգան ի թագաւորէն մեծէ Արշակայ ի Հայոց աշխարհէն առ կայսրն Յունաց առ Վաղէս:

11:1 The following are the princes who had gone to Vaghes, the emperor of Byzantium from the great king Arshak, from the land of Armenia:

11:2 Ինքնին մեծ եպիսկոպոսապետն Հայոց Ներսէս. եւ մեծ նահապետն մամիկոնեան տոհմին, որում անուն Վարդան կոչիւր. եղբայր սա մեծի ստրատելատին Հայոց որում Վասակն կոչէր, որ դայեակք եւ սնուցիչք էին թագաւորին Արշակայ:

11:2 The great archbishop of Armenia, Nerses himself, the great nahapet of the Mamikonean tohm, named Vardan, the brother of the great stratelate of Armenia, named Vasak they were the dayeaks and nourishers of king Arshak:

11:3 Եւ ընդ նմա Մեհեն նահապետն Ռշտունեաց, եւ Մեհառ նահապետն Անձեւացեաց, եւ Գարջոյլ Մաղխազ նահապետն Խոռխոռունեաց, եւ Մուշկ նահապետն Սահառունեաց, եւ Դեմետ նահապետն Գնթունեաց, եւ Կիշկէն նահապետն Բագէնից, եւ Սուրիկ նահապետն Հրսիձորոյ, եւ Վրկէն նահապետն Հաբուժենից:

11:3 Mehen, the nahapet of Rhshtunik, Meharh, the nahapet of Anjewacik, Garjoyl Maghaz, the nahapet of Xorhxorunik, Mushk, the nahapet of Saharhunik, Demet, the nahapet of Gntunik, Gishken, the nahapet of Bagenk, Surik, the nahapet of Hesijor, Vrken, the nahapet of Habuzhenk:

11:4 սոքա չոգան դեսպանութեամբ ի սէր միաբանութեան առ կայսրն Վաղէս:

11:4 These individuals went to the emperor Vaghes in an embassy to confirm affection and unity:

11:5 Իսկ թագաւորն Վաղէս արգել աքսորեաց զմեծ քահանայապետն Ներսէս, եւ փոխանակ սորա արձակեաց զեղբօրորդիս զթագաւորին Արշակայ զԳնէլ եւ զՏիրիթ. եւ գանձս բազումս եւ անթիւս վասն զմիտս հաճել թագաւորին Արշակայ, ի ձեռս Վարդանայ եւ որք ընդ նմա էին, առաքէր:

11:5 But emperor Vaghes detained and exiled the great chief-priest Nerses, releasing in his place king Arshak’s nephews, Gnel and Tirit. Vaghes also sent much, inestimable treasure to placate the mind of king Arshak, entrusting this to Vardan and those with him:

11:6 Եկին հասին դեսպանքն երթեալք ի կայսերէն առ թագաւորն Հայոց մեծաց Արշակ, եւ մատուցանէին նմա զհրովարտակն կայսերն. եւ ընդ նմին գիր տրտնջելոյ եւ ամբաստանութեան:

11:6 The emissaries who had left the emperor came to king Arshak of Greater Armenia presenting him with the emperor’s hrovartak and with it a document of displeasure and accusation:

11:7 Զի գրեալ էր կայսրն զսրբոյն Ներսիսէ առ թագաւորն Հայոց Արշակ, թէ նա սպան զորդին իւր զմիամօր, վասն այսորիկ արգելաւ աստէն. զի մի՛ մեղադիր ինչ լինիցիս, ընկալ եւ զպատանեակսդ առաջի զարձակեալսդ զերկոսեան զեղբօրորդիսդ Արշակայ, զԳնէլն եւ զՏիրիթն:

11:7 For the emperor had written to Arshak, the king of Armenia, about the blessed Nerses, saying that he had killed his only son, and therefore had been arrested. “And so that you will not in any way blame us, accept the two freed hostages, the brother’s sons of Arshak, Gnel and Tirit:

11:8 Ունէին եւ զանթիւ կարասի գանձուցն առաջի թագաւորին:
|
11:8 The emissaries also laid before the king countless treasures of wealth:
|
11:9 Իսկ թագաւորն Արշակ իբրեւ լուաւ եւ ետես զայս ամենայն, անշնորհ առնէր զտալիսն եւ զբերելիսն կարասոյն:

11:9 Now when king Arshak heard and saw alI of this, he was ungrateful to the giver and to the bearers of the wealth:

11:10 Ի ցասումն մեծապէս բարկութեամբ ընդ կայսերն նիւթեաց, եթէ զիա՛րդ իշխեաց, արգելուլ զայնպիսի այր զմեծ եւ զպատուական, զգլուխ եւ զվարդապետ զառաջնորդ աշխարհի եւ զթագաւորութեան միոջ:

11:10 He was moved to intense anger against the emperor, wondering how he dared to detain a man such as Nerses, great and honorable, the head, vardapet, and leader of the land and realm:

11:11 Քարինք բազումք, ասէ, ի վերայ կայսերն, եւ ձեր ի բերելդ. քարինք եւ մեր շատ կան ի թափել զատամունս նորա ի տալն. եւ ձեր ի բերելդ. զմեր վատթարութիւնս յո՛ տարայց. արդ այդմ երախտեացդ ես դարձուցանեմ:

11:11 He note: “May many rocks fall upon the emperor and upon you, the bearers. We too have many rocks with which to knock out your teeth and his. How can I stand this wickedness done to us? Now I will repay him for this favor:

11:12 Տայր հրաման Վասակայ իւրում զօրավարին զօր ժողովել, զգունդս բովանդակել, ելանել հարկանել եւ աւար առնուլ զկողմանս Գամրաց:

11:12 He commanded Vasak, his general, to assemble a force, to organize brigades, and to go and loot the Cappadocian areas:
|
11:13 Իսկ զօրավարն սպարապետն Վասակ, վաղվաղակի զտուեալ հրամանս նորա կատարէր. զզօրս բազումս իբրեւ զերկերոյր եւ զվաթսուն հազարաց ի մի վայր կուտէր. հարկանէր աւար առնոյր զկողմանս Գամրաց մինչեւ ի քաղաքն յանկուրացւոց. զվեց ամ զմիմեանց զհետ աւերէր զաշխարհ սահմանացն Յունաց:

11:13 The general and sparapet Vasak immediately implemented the orders given him; he assembled in one place some [260000] troops, and looted the Cappadocian areas as far as the city of Ankura. For six years, one after the other, he destroyed the land on the borders of Byzantium:

11:14 Լցան աւարաւ բազմաւ եւ պէսպէս մեծութեամբ, բռնութեամբ սաստիւ մեծաւ թշնամութեամբ ընդ կողմանս ընդ այնոսիկ:

11:14 They filled up with much loot and diverse sorts of greatness, visiting upon those areas violence with great, intense emnity:
