56:0 Յաղագս վկայութեանն Զուիթայ երիցու յերկրին Պարսից:

 56:0 The martyrdom of the priest Zuit, from the city of Artashat, in the country of the Iranians:

56:1 Ապա իբրեւ չոգան տարան յերկիրն Պարսից զամենայն գերութիւն Հայոց, եւ զԶուիթ երէց Արտաշատ քաղաքի ունէին կապանօք առաջի թագաւորին Պարսից Շապհոյ:

 56:1 Now when all the Armenian captives had been taken to the country of Iran, they took the presbyter of the city of Artashat, Zuit before king Shapuh of Iran, in shackles:

56:2 Եւ նայէր թագաւորն Պարսից Շապուհ, եւ տեսանէր զերէցն Զուիթ այր բարձր եւ անձնեայ, եւ ի տիոց մանուկ. եւ հեր գլխոյն ալեւորեալ էին, այլ մուրուքն դեռ տակաւին սեաւ եւս կային:

 56:2 King Shapuh of Iran looked and saw the priest Zuit, a tall and attractive man, but a youth, The hair on his head was grey, but his beard was still black:

56:3 Ապա յորժամ զառաջինն խօսել սկսաւ, ասէ. Եթէ տեսանէ՞ք զառնդ զայդր զչարութիւն. քանզի յայտ է, ի հերաց այտի երեւի` թէ կախարդ է. զի հերքն սպիտակ են, եւ մուրուքն սեաւ:

 56:3 When the king began to speak, he note: “Do you see that he is a man of evil? It is clear from his hair that he is a witch, for his hair is white though his beard is black:

56:4 Իսկ երիցուն տուեալ պատասխանի` ասէ. Թէ քեզ պէտ իցէ, այլ զինչ կամիս խօսել եւ առնել` խօսեաց. այլ վասն այդորիկ գիտեա, զի յիրաւունս սպիտակեցեալ են նախ հերքս. զի բազում աւուրբք երէց են, գոնեա՛ հնգետասան ամօք քան զմուրուս նախաբոյս են:

 56:4 The priest replied: “Say what you want to do, and do it. But as for the question of the hair know that the hair on my head was justified in turning white first, for it was at least fifteen years earlier than the beard in sprouting:

56:5 Իսկ թագաւորն հրաման տայր մինչեւ ի վաղիւն պահել զնա. իսկ ի վաղիւն հրաման տայր ածել ի հրապարակն շղթայիւք:

 56:5 The king ordered that he should be held until the next day. Now the next day he ordered that Zuit be brought to the concourse in chains:

56:6 Եւ ելին ոստիկանք արքունի հարցանել, եթէ իցէ` յանձն առցէ պաշտել զօրէնս մոգութեանն, ոչ մեռցի:

 56:6 Then ostikans of the court arose and inquired whether he would consent to accept the worship of the Mazdean faith; otherwise, he would be put to death:

56:7 Իսկ նա ոչ առնոյր յանձն. այլ կամեցեալ մեռանել խնդութեամբ վասն Աստուծոյ, երթեալ ի տեղի մահուան, եւ աղաչեաց զվերակացուս իւրոյ մահուանն, զի թողացուսցեն նմա սակաւ մի կալ յաղօթս:

 56:7 But Zuit refused. On the contrary he was delighted and wanted to die for the name of God. Going to the place of execution, he requested of his overseers that he be allowed to pray a little:

56:8 Եւ մատուցեալ յառաջագոյն, եդ ծունր եւ ասէ:

 56:8 Going forward, he kneeled and note:

56:9 Աղօթք ի ժամ մահուն Զուիթայ:

 56:9 The Prayer before death:

56:10 Արարիչ մեր, որ արարեր զերկինս եւ զերկիր եւ զծով յոչընչէ, եւ ստեղծեր զմեզ ի հողոյ, եւ զհողեղէնս այսպէս իմաստունս բանաւորս եւ կենդանիս արարեր:

 56:10 O our Creator, who created the sky and the earth and the sea out of nothing, who created us out of the earth, and provided us with reason, word and life:

56:11 Եւ շնորհեցեր մեզ զգիտութիւն քո, զոր ցուցեր ազգաց որդւոց մարդկան ի ձեռն սրբոց քոց մարգարէիցն կարապետացն քոց. եւ դու քեզէն եկիր իջեր մարդացար երեւեցար յերկրի, եւ ընդ մարդկան շրջեցար. եւ զկատարեալ իմաստութիւնդ քո շնորհեցեր արարածոց քոց, զոր Առաքելովքն քարոզեցեր քոց ստացուածոց յաշխարհի:

 56:11 You gave us your knowledge, which you communicated to the human race through the holy prophets, your forerunners; then you yourself descended (from heaven), became a man, appeared on earth and walked among people, and gave your perfect wisdom to your creatures, preached through your apostles to your followers in the world:

56:12 Եւ վարդապետօքն սրբովք, զորս եղեր ի քում յեկեղեցւոջ լուսաւորս, զամենեսեան իմաստնացուցեր:

 56:12 And through the holy teachers, whom he set as lights in his church, He made all wise:

56:13 Եւ զիս զայր զանարժան արժանի արարեր քում ծառայութեանդ. եւ պատրաստեցեր զիս տառապեալս սնանել եւ ուսանել ընդ ձեռօք քո սրբոյ եւ մեծի եւ քո քահանայապետին Ներսիսի` քո պաշտօնէին, եւ ի ձեռաց նորա առնուլ զձեռնադրութիւն երիցութեան, եւ ի ձեռաց նորա զիս նուիրեալ քեզ ի քահանայութեան:

 56:13 And you have honored me, an unworthy one, to become your servant, you have given me, a sufferer, the opportunity to be educated and to study with your servant, the holy and great high priest Nerses, and to be ordained a priest by him, and to be ordained a priest by him to you:

56:14 Եւ յայնմ աշտիճանէ պատրաստեցեր ըմպել զվկայութեան բաժակն փրկութեան, զոր ըմբելով` զանուն տեառն կարդացից. զաղօթս իմ ես տեառն տաց առաջի ամենայն ժողովրդոց նորա:

 56:14 In this rank, he prepared me to drink the ascetic cup of salvation, which I will drink, glorifying the name of God, and I will turn my prayer to the Lord in front of all his people:

56:15 Ընդ որում քեզ փառք եւ զօրութիւն եւ իշխանութիւն միածնի Որդւոյ քո սիրելոյ Յիսուսի Քրիստոսի, եւ կենդանարար Հոգւոյդ քում սրբոյ, յառաջ քան զամենայն յաւիտեանս այժմ եւ միշտ եւ յաւիտեանս յաւիտենից. ամէն:

 56:15 Glory and power and authority to You and to Your beloved only-begotten Son Jesus Christ and to your life-giving Holy Spirit, from everlasting, now, and ever, and to the ages of ages:

56:16 Եւ իբրեւ զայս ամենայն ասաց, բազում մարդիկ ամբոխի ժողովեալ էին, ասացին զամէնն:

 56:16 When he had said all this, the crowded crowd that had gathered note: Amen:

56:17 Ապա զայրացեալք վերակացուք սպանողութեանն, թէ ընդէ՛ր այնչափ երկար թողացուցին նմա խօսել, ապա տագնապաւ ի տեղի մահուն հասուցանէին:

 56:17 Then the executioners were angry that they had allowed him to talk for so long, and therefore they immediately took him to the place of execution:

56:18 Իսկ նա մեծաւ խնդութեամբ կարկառեալ զպարանոցն, վճարէր ի սուսերէն:

 56:18 And he, with great joy, offered his neck and died from a sword blow:
