4:76 Քանզի եթէ աւագագոյնք էին եւ եթէ մանկագոյնք, զմի առաքինութիւն հաւատոյ զգեցան:

 4:76 For if some were older and some younger, yet they were clothed with a single virtuous faith:

4:77 Ոչ ինչ յիշեցին ամենեւին զանուն փափկութեան մայրենի ազատութեանն, այլ իբրեւ մարդք, որ վշտամբերք լեալ իցեն անդստին ի շինական սովորութեանցն, տանջելով վարեալ զկեանս աշխարհիս, անդրագոյնք եւս քան զնոսա յանձն առին զհամբերութիւն վշտաց:

 4:77 They did not at all recall the memory of the comfort of their matronly nobility, but like laboring men used to peasant tasks they endured the toils of country life, and even more than their husbands accepted and sustained such labors:

4:78 Ոչ միայն յոգիսն մխիթարեալ կացին առ աներեւոյթ զաւրութիւն յուսոյն յաւիտենից, այլ եւ մարմնոյ նեղութեամբք առաւել եւս բարձին զբեռն ծանրութեան:

 4:78 Not only in the spirit were they consoled by the invisible power of the hope of eternity, but in the tribulations of the body they bore even more easily their heavy load:

4:79 Զի թէպէտ եւ ունէին զիւրաքանչիւր ձեռնասուն սպասաւորս, ոչ ոք երեւէր ի նոցանէ՝ թէ ո՛ր տիկինն իցէ եւ կամ ո՛ր նաժիշտն. մի հանդերձ էր հասարակաց, եւ միապէս գետնախշտիք երկոքեան:

 4:79 For although they each had their domestic servants, none could be distinguished among them as being mistress or maid. All wore the same clothing and both alike slept on the ground:

4:80 Ոչ ոք ումեք անկողնարկ լինէր. քանզի եւ չճանաչէին իսկ զխոտեղէնսն ընտրել ի միմեանց. մի գոյն թխութեան փսիրայիցն, եւ մի գոյն սեւութեան սնարից բարձիցն:

 4:80 No one made another’s bed, for they did not distinguish one’s straw from another’s. Their mats were the same shade of gray; their pillows the same shade of black:

4:81 Ոչ գոյր նոցա խախամոքք անուշարար առանձինն, եւ ոչ հացարարք որոշեալ ի պէտս սպասու ըստ ազատաց կարգի, այլ հասարակաց էր:

 4:81 They had no confectioners for individual delicacies nor separate bakers to serve them in accordance with their noble rank, but they shared all they had:

4:82 Շաբաթամուտն ըստ կարգի միայնակեցաց, որ յանապատս բնակեալ են:

 4:82 The Friday evening (fast) they observed like solitaries who dwell in the deserts:

4:83 Ոչ ոք ումեք ջուր ի ձեռս արկանէր, եւ ոչ կրտսերք աւագաց դաստառակս մատուցանէին. չանկաւ աւշնան ի ձեռս փափկասուն կանանց, եւ ոչ մատուցաւ եւղ ի զուարթութիւն խրախութեան:

 4:83 No one poured water over another’s hands; the younger did not offer the older towels. The delicate women did not use soap, nor were they offered oil for merry feasting:

4:84 չեդան առաջի սուրբ սկտեղք, եւ ոչ անկան բաժակակալք յուրախութիւն. չեկաց ուրուք նոցա նուիրակ առ դուրս, եւ ոչ կոչեցան պատուականք յարանց ի տաճարս նոցա. չյիշեցան նոցա, թէ գուցէ ոք ամենեւին ի բնակասնունդ դայեկաց եւ կամ բնաւ ի սիրելի հարազատաց:

 4:84 Immaculate dishes were not set before them, nor plates for jollity. No butler stood at their door, and no illustrious men were invited to their homes. Nor did they have any recollection of who was one of their domestic nurses and who one of their dear relations:

4:85 Փոշոտեցան եւ ծխոտեցան սրահակք եւ սրսկապանք նորեկ հարսանց, եւ սարդի ոստայնք ձգեցան ի սենեակս առագաստաց նոցա. կործանեցան բարձրագահք տաճարաց նոցա, եւ խանգարեցան սպասք երախանաց նոցա. անկան կործանեցան ապարանք նոցա, եւ տապալեալ աւերեցան ամուրք ապաստանի նոցա:

 4:85 The hangings and bed curtains of the newly married brides became dusty and sooty; spiders’ webs were spun in their nuptial chambers. The chairs of honor in their houses were destroyed; the vessels for their banquets were broken. Their palaces crumbled and fell; the fortresses of their refuge were demolished and razed:

4:86 Չորացան ազազեցան բուրաստանք ծաղկոցաց նոցա, եւ տաշտախիլ եղեն որթք գինեբեր այգեաց նոցա:

 4:86 Their flower gardens dried up and turned to sand; the wine-bearing stocks of their vineyards were uprooted:

4:87 Աչաւք իւրեանց տեսին զյափշտակութիւն արարոց իւրեանց, եւ ականջաւք իւրեանց լուան զչարչարանս վշտից սիրելեաց իւրեանց. առան գանձք իւրեանց յարքունիս, եւ ոչ մնացին ամենեւին զարդք երեսաց իւրեանց:

 4:87 With their own eyes they saw the ravaging of their property; with their own ears they heard the torments and sufferings of their dear ones. Their treasures were confiscated by the court, and there remained no ornaments at all for their faces:

4:88 Տիկնայք փափկասունք Հայոց աշխարհին, որ գրգեալք եւ գգուեալք էին յիւրաքանչիւր բաստեռունս եւ ի գահաւորակս, հանապազ բոկ եւ հետի երթային ի տունս աղաւթից, անձանձրոյթ խնդրեալ ուխտիւք, զի համբերել կարասցեն մեծի նեղութեանն:

 4:88 The delicate women of Armenia, who had been cossetted and pampered in their litters and sedan-chairs, regularly attended the houses of prayer without shoes and on foot, begging with tireless entreaties that they might be able to endure their great tribulation:

4:89 Որ ի մանկութենէ իւրեանց սնեալ էին ուղղովք զուարակաց եւ ամճովք էրէոց, խոտաբուտ կենաւք իբրեւ զվայրենիս ընդունէին զկերակուրն մեծաւ խնդութեամբ, եւ ոչ յիշէին ամենեւին զսովորական փափկութիւնն:

 4:89 Those who from their childhood had been raised on the marrow of steers and the dainty parts of game, most joyfully ate grass, living like wild animals and not at all mindful of their accustomed luxury:

4:90 Սեւացեալ ներկան մորթք մարմնոյ նոցա, վասն զի ցերեկ արեւակէզք էին եւ զամենայն գիշերսն գետնաբեկք:

 4:90 The skin of their bodies turned black in color, for by day they were burned by the sun, and the whole night they lay on the ground:

4:91 Սաղմոսք էին մշտնջենաւորք մրմունջք ի բերանս նոցա, եւ մխիթարութիւնք կատարեալք ընթերցուածք մարգարէիցն:

 4:91 Psalms were perpetually murmured on their lips; and readings from the prophets were their supreme consolation:

4:92 Միաբանեցին երկու երկու իբրեւ ամոլք հաւանք եւ հաւասարք՝ ուղիղ տանելով զակաւսն արքայութեան, զի առանց վրիպելոյ հասցեն ի նաւահանգիստն խաղաղութեան:

 4:92 They were joined in couples like willing and equal yoked pairs, plowing straight the furrow of the kingdom so that they might arrive at the haven of peace without losing their way:

4:93 Մոռացան զկանացի տկարութիւն, եւ եղեն արուք առաքինիք ի հոգեւոր պատերազմին. մարտ եղեալ կռուեցան ընդ մեղսն կարեւորս, հատին կտրեցին եւ ընկեցին զմահաբեր արմատս նորա:

 4:93 They forgot their feminine weakness and became men heroic at spiritual warfare. Waging war with the gravest sins, they struck away and cut out their deadly roots:

4:94 Միամտութեամբ յաղթեցին խորամանկութեան, եւ սուրբ սիրով լուացին զկապուտակ ներկուածս նախանձուն. հատին զարմատս ագահութեան, եւ չորացան մահաբեր պտուղք ոստոց նոցա:

 4:94 By sincerity they overcame deceit; and by holy love they cleansed the livid stains of jealousy. They extirpated the roots of avarice; and the mortal fruits of its branches dried up:

4:95 Խոնարհութեամբ կռփեցին զամբարտաւանութիւն եւ նովին խոնարհութեամբ հասին երկնաւոր բարձրութեանն:

 4:95 By humility they smote pride; and by the same humility they attained the heights of heaven:

4:96 Աղաւթիւք բացին զփակեալ դրունս երկնից, եւ սուրբ խնդրուածովք իջուցին զհրեշտակս ի փրկութիւն. լուան աւետիս ի հեռաստանէ, եւ փառաւորեցին զԱստուած ի բարձունս:

 4:96 By their prayers they opened the closed gates of heaven; and by their pious supplications brought down angels for salvation. From afar they heard the good news; and they glorified God on high:

4:97 Այրիք որ ի նոսա էին՝ եղեն վերստին հարսունք առաքինութեան, եւ բարձին յանձանց զնախատինս այրութեանն:

 4:97 The widows among them became second brides of virtue, removing from themselves the opprobrium of widowhood:

4:98 Իսկ կանայք կապելոցն կամաւք կապեցին զմարմնաւոր ցանկութիւնս, եւ եղեն կցորդ չարչարանաց սուրբ կապելոցն. ի կեանս իւրեանց նմանեցին քաջ նահատակացն մահուամբ, եւ ի հեռաստանէ եղեն վարդապետք մխիթարիչք բանտարգելեացն:

 4:98 The wives of the prisoners willingly chained the desires of the flesh and shared the torments of the holy prisoners; in their lifetimes they resembled the valiant martyrs in their death, and from afar became consoling teachers for the imprisoned:

4:99 Մատամբք իւրեանց վաստակեցին եւ կերակրեցան, եւ զկարգեալ ռոճիկ նոցա յարքունուստ՝ ամ յամէ թոշակ առնէին եւ տային տանել նոցա ի մխիթարութիւն:

 4:99 With their own fingers they toiled and sustained themselves; the stipend allotted them from the treasury they made their yearly allowance and had it brought to them for consolation:

4:100 Անարիւն ճիպռանց նմանեցին, որ երգոյն քաղցրութեամբ առանց կերակրանաց կեան, եւ կենդանի են միայն զաւդն ծծելով, զանմարմնոցն բերեն զնմանութիւն:

 4:100 They resembled bloodless grasshoppers who exist without food by the sweetness of their song and live by merely breathing the air, exhibiting the likeness of the incorporeal beings:
