16:0 Գալ համարակարին գանձու մեծաւ առ յանկուցանել զիշխանս Հայոց ի բաժնէն Յունաց. յափշտակել իշխանաց զգանձն: Միաբանութիւն երկոցունց թագաւորաց ընդդէմ յափշտակչաց: Հաշտութիւն, երթալ ոմանց յիշխանացն առ Պարսիկ եւ այլոց առ Յոյնս:

16:0 The auditor comes with a great treasure to attract the Armenian princes from the Greek sector. The princes seize the treasure. The unity of the two kings against the robbers. Reconciliation; some of the princes go to the Persians, and others to the Greeks:

16:1 Արդ՝ իբրեւ տեսանէր թագաւորն Պարսից զմարդկան փախուստ ի կայսերէն՝ արձակոյր ի Հայս զՎասպուրականն համարակարն հանդերձ գանձու բազմաւ եւ մեծամեծ պատուովք. զի այնպէս նուաճեալ ածցէ զնոսա ի ծառայութիւն իւր. եւ գնայր համարակարն ի Հայս, եւ ընդ նմա գանձ ուղտուք բազմաւք:

16:1 Now when the king of Persia saw the flight of these men from the emperor, he sent to Armenia the auditor of Vaspurakan with much treasure and many honours, so that in this way he might subject them to his own service. The auditor went to Armenia accompanied by the treasure on many camels:

16:2 Եւ մինչ Սամուէլ Վահեւունի հանդերձ այլովք ընկերաւք իւրեանց գնացին ընդդէմ նորա եւ պատահեալ նմա ի սահմանս Ատրպատական աշխարհին՝ հանին զգանձն, եւ համարակարին զարեւն պարգեւ շնորհեցին: Եւ էին այսոքիկ. Ատատ Խորխոռունի, Սամուէլ Վահեւունի եւ Մամակ Մամիկոնեան, Ստեփանոս Սիւնի եւ Կոտիտ Ամատունեաց տէր եւ Թէոդորոս Տրպատունի, եւ հեծեալք իբրեւ երկու հազարք:

16:2 When Samuēl Vahewuni with other companions of his went to meet him and encountered him on the borders of the land of Atrpatakan, they seized the treasure but spared the auditor’s life. They were the following: Atat Khorkhoṙuni, Samuēl Vahewuni and Mamak Mamikonean, Step’anos Siwni, and Kotit, lord of the Amatunik’, and T’ēodoros Trpatuni, and about two thousand cavalry:

16:3 Եւ զայս եդեալ ի մտի՝ եթէ գանձուդ այդուիկ զՀոնս մեր արասցուք. եւ առեալ ի նոցանէ աւգնականութիւն՝ պատերազմեսցուք ընդ երկոսին թագաւորսդ, եւ բռնութեամբ զերկիրդ մեր ի մեզ դարձուսցուք: Եւ հասեալ ի Նախճաւան քաղաք՝ քակտեցան խորհուրդք միաբանութեան. ոչ հաւատալով միմեանց ի բաց բաժանեցին զգանձն, եւ բանակեցան եւ նստան ի շամբին, որ կոչի Ճահուկ:

16:3 They had reckoned that: ’With this treasure we shall make the Huns ours. Receiving support from them, we shall wage war against both kings, and by force restore our own land to us. ’ But when they reached the city of Nakhchawan, their plans of unity dissolved. Not trusting each other, they divided out the treasure and encamped at the fen called Chahuk:

16:4 Նա աւանիկ համարակարն երթեալ ի դուռն՝ պատմեաց թագաւորին զամենայն եղեալսն եւ բանք կայսերն արդարացան: Յայնժամ հրամայէ գրել Խոսրով արքայ հրովարտակ առ կայսր, եւ խնդրէ զաւր յաւգնականութիւն, եւ արձակու անդրէն զՎասպուրական համարակարն ի Հայս: Յայնժամ հրամայէ Հերակղի զաւրավարի, որ նստէր ի Հայաստան երկրի, առնուլ զզաւրս իւր եւ գնալ ի վերայ նոցա ի պատերազմ:

16:4 The auditor went to court and informed the king of all that had happened; the words of the emperor were vindicated. Then king Khosrov ordered a letter to be written to the emperor; he asked for an army in support, and sent back to Armenia the auditor of Vaspurakan. Then he (the emperor) ordered the general Heraclius, who was stationed in Armenia, to take his troops and march against them in war:

16:5 Եւ արդ՝ երթեալ միացան երկուց թագաւորացն զաւր ի Նախճաւանն քաղաքի: Եւ եղեւ ի գումարել ի վերայ նոցա զաւրացս այսոցիկ՝ սկսան արձակել առ նոսա պատգամս, զի մի լիցի պատերազմ եւ արիւնհեղութիւն ի մէջ քրիստոնէից, այլ ի բաց կացցեն ի յամառութենէն յայնմանէ, եւ նուաճեսցին անդրէն ի ծառայութիւն թագաւորին, եւ երդմամբ հաստատեալ առ նոսա, եթէ ոչ երկիւղ է ձեզ ի թագաւորէն: Ասէր եւ համարակարն, եթէ «Զիս արքայից արքայ առ ձեզ արձակեաց, եւ ես ձեզ իսկ բերի զգանձն, եւ չիք ինչ ձեզ երկիւղ յարքայից արքայէ», եւ ցուցանէր նոցա երդումն ըստ աւրինի իւրեանց:

16:5 So, the forces of the two kings joined together at the city of Nakhchawan. Now when these armies had united against them (the rebels), they began to send messages to them, that there should not be battle and the shedding of blood between Christians, but they should desist from their folly and submit to the authority of the king. And they confirmed this for them by an oath: ’You have nothing to fear from the king. ’ The auditor added: ’The king of kings sent me to you, and I have brought you the treasure. You have nothing to fear from the king of kings. ’ And he swore an oath to them in accordance with their custom:

16:6 Սկսան նոքա քակտել եւ բաժանել ի միմեանց. ի բաց եկաց ի սոցանէ Մամակն Մամիկոնեան եւ Կոտիտն Ամատունեաց տէրն եւ Ստեփանոս եւ այլք եւս ընդ նոսա, զանձինս անվնաս ցուցանելով համարակարին՝ նուաճեցին զզաւրս իւրեանց ի ծառայութիւն արքային Պարսից: Իսկ Ատատն Խորխոռունի եւ Սամուէլն Վահեւունի զաւրաւքն իւրեանց փախստական գնացին ընդ քաղաքագեւղն կոչեցեալ Սաւդայ, հասանէին յաշխարհն Աղուանից, ի Հոնս դէմս արարեալ, եւ անցեալ ընդ գետովն որ կոչի Կուր՝ բանակէին առ գետեզերբն:

16:6 They began to waver and to split apart from each other. Mamak Mamikonean, Kotit, lord of the Amatunik’, and Step’anos and still others in their company abandoned them. Declaring themselves innocent to the auditor, they submitted their forces to the authority of the king of Persia. But Atat Khorkhoṙuni and Samuēl Vahewuni fled with their own troops. Passing through the village called Sawdk’, they reached the land of the Ałuank’ and made for the Huns. After crossing the river called Kur, they camped on its bank:

16:7 Հասեալ եւ սոքա յափն գետոյն՝ բանակէին աստի կողմանէ: Եւ իբրեւ ոչ կարացին նոքա վստահանալ ի ճամբարս Հոնաց, յայնժամ ապա երդումն խնդրեալ ի թագաւորէն Յունաց, եւ գնացին ի ծառայութիւն նորա: Գնացին ոմանք առ համարակարն, եւ դարձան անդրէն յերկիրն իւրեանց: Եւ ժողովեալ համարակարին զամենայն իշխանս եւ զզաւրս Հայոց, որ ի Պարսից կողմանէ՝ ողոքաւ եւ եւս քաղցր բանիւք յորդորեալ զամենեսեան միաբանեաց, արար գունդս գունդս:

16:7 The others also reached the edge of the river and camped on the near side. Since they were unable to rely on the forces of the Huns, they then sought an oath from the king of the Greeks and submitted to him. Some went to the auditor and returned to their own land. The auditor assembled all the Armenian princes and soldiers who were from the Persian sector. Urging them with entreaties and sweet words, he brought them all to unity, and formed various contingents:

16:8 Եթող անդրէն յաշխարհին սակաւուք եւ գնաց. «Մինչեւ ես ծանուցից, ասէ, վասն ձեր, եւ հասցէ անտի հրաման դադարել անդ»: Զի զմտաւ իսկ ածեալ էր նորա եւ զայլոց գալն առ նոսա եւ զբազմանալն:

16:8 He left them in that country with a few troops and departed: ’Until I give news about you, he said, and an order comes for you to remain there. ’ For he had reckoned that others would come to them and increase their number:

16:9 Իսկ զԱտատն Խորխոռունի փութանակի հանդերձ զաւրուն իւրոյ կոչէ թագաւորն ի պաղատն, եւ մեծարէ շքով եւ պատուով. եւ տայ ինչս բազումս եւ գումարէ ի Թրակացիս:

16:9 But the emperor hastily summoned Atat Khorkhoṙuni with his troops to the palace. He bestowed on him compliments and honours, gave him many presents, and sent him to Thrace:
