3:1 Եւ եղեւ իբրեւ լուաւ զայս ամենայն թագաւորն Պարսից՝ զուարճանայր, զուարթանայր, տաւն մեծ ուրախութեան առնէր զաւրն զայն, եւ բազում ուխտ ատրուշանացն կատարէր:

3:1 When the king of the Persians heard about all this, he was delighted and rejoiced. On that day he celebrated a great feast and carried out many vows to the fire-temples:

3:2 Զաւրաժողով լինէր, խաղայր գնայր, ասպատակ սփռէր զկողմամբք Հայաստան աշխարհին. զխաւսուն եւ զանասուն, զծեր եւ զտղայ, զերիտասարդ եւ զմանուկ առ հասարակ խաղացուցանէր ի գերութիւն:

3:2 King Ardashir assembled troops and advanced, raiding throughout the areas of the Armenian land. He led into captivity people and animals, the elderly and infants, youths and children alike:

3:3 Անդ ոմն պրծեալ ապրեցուցանէր ի հինէ անտի յորդւոցն Խոսրովու թագաւորին Հայոց՝ մանկիկ մի փոքրիկ, անուն Տրդատ. առեալ դայեկացն փախուցեալ ի դուռն կայսեր ի կողմանս Յունաց:

3:3 It happened that someone took and saved from that raid one of the children of Xosrov, king of the Armenians. This was a small child named Trdat, who was taken by dayeaks and escaped to the court of the emperor in Greek territory:

3:4 Եւ զերկիրն Հայոց այնուհետեւ եկեալ արքային Պարսից յիւր անուն զտեղիսն անուանէր. եւ զզաւրսն Յունաց փախստական արարեալ հալածական տանէին մինչեւ ի սահմանս Յունաց:

3:4 Thereafter the king of the Persians came to the country of the Armenians, renaming places after his own name and putting to flight the Greek troops, chasing them to the borders of Greece (i.e., to Byzantine territory in western Asia Minor:

3:5 Վիհս փոսացուցեալ՝ սահմանս հաստատէին, եւ տեղւոյն անուն եդեալ Դրունս Փոսից, առ տեղեաւն որում Սոյզն կոչէին:

3:5 Digging trenches, the Persians established the new borders, naming the place formerly called Soyzn (“the Pit”), the “Gate of Trenches:

3:6 Եւ զայլ մարդիկ երկրին խաղացոյց, եւ զաշխարհն յինքն գրաւեաց:

3:6 The king had other people led to their Persian country, and he seized that Armenian land for himself:

3:7 Արդ՝ երթեալ, սնեալ եւ ուսեալ Տրդատէս առ կոմսի ումեմն Լիկիանէս անուն կոչեցելոյ:

3:7 Now Trdat Trdate’s (Tiridates) went and was nourished and educated by a certain count, who was named Licinius (Likiane’s:

3:8 Իսկ որդի Պարթեւին որ ի կողմանս Յունաց գաղթեաց՝ սնանէր եւ ուսանէր ի Կեսարիայ Կապադովկացւոց քաղաքին:

3:8 Meanwhile Gregory, the son of Anak the Parthian, who had gone to the Byzantine areas, was nourished and educated in the city of Caesarea in Cappadocia:

3:9 եւ մերձաւորեալ զնա սնոյց դայեկաւք երկիւղիւն Քրիստոսի. եւ ուսեալ եւս զքրիստոսական դպրութեան հանգամանս ընտանի եղեալ գրոց Աստուծոյ. եւ մերձեալ յերկիւղ Տեառն, որոյ անուն ճանաչէր Գրիգորիոս:

3:9 Someone close to him had him raised by dayeaks in the fear of Christ and, additionally, he was schooled in the details of Christian learning, becoming familiar with the scriptures of God and the fear of the Lord. His name was Gregory (Grigorios:

3:10 Իբրեւ տեղեկացաւ ի դայեկացն հայրենի գործոցն որ եղեալն էին՝ ել եւ գնաց առ Տրդատիոս ըստ հեշտ պաշտաման:

3:10 As soon as he had been informed by the dayeaks about the deeds done by his father, Gregory arose and went to Trdat (Trdatios) to perform voluntary service:

3:11 Եւ թաքուցանէր զանձն, եւ զայն ինչ ի վեր ոչ հանէր, թէ ո՛յր, կամ ուստի՛, կամ ո՛րպէս, կամ զիա՛րդ. զանձն ի ծառայութիւն տուեալ ի հնազանդութեան պաշտէր առաջի նորա:

3:11 He hid his identify and other facts about himself concerning who he was, where he had come from, how, and why. He obediently gave himself into Trdat’s service and worked for him:

3:12 Ընդ ժամանակս ընդ այնոսիկ իշխանն Յունաց ի հալածել կայր զեկեղեցի Աստուծոյ:

3:12 In that period, the prince of the Byzantines was persecuting the church of God:

3:13 Իսկ իբրեւ զգացեալ Տրդատիոս վասն Գրիգորի, թէ Քրիստոսական պաշտամանն հաղորդ է՝ սկսեալ այնուհետեւ պատուհասակոծ առնէր զնա, եւ ազգի ազգի արհաւիրս արկանէր ի վերայ նորա:

3:13 As soon as Trdat realized that Gregory was a member of the Christian faith, he began to scold and threaten him with various punishments:

3:14 բազում անգամ ի բանդս եւ ի կապանս տանջանաւք նեղէր զնա՝ թողուլ ի բաց լինել նմա յերկրպագութենէն Քրիստոսի, եւ ի հնազանդութիւն դառնալ նմա դիցն սնոտեաց եւ պղծութեանն պաշտաման:

3:14 Often he harassed Gregory with torments in prison and in fetters so that he would abandon the worship of Christ and, obediently, turn to the vain and loathsome worship of the gods:
