2:26 Եւ հրամայէր վեց առն երկու քաշկէնս ժամէ ի ժամ, եւ դորակ եւ կէս ջուր. եւ ամենեւին ոչ զոք թողոյր մաւտ երթալ ի դուրս բանտին:

 2:26 He ordered that two barley loaves and a jar and one-half of water be given to each six men at each meal time. And he allowed no one at all to approach the prison gates:

2:27 Եւ իբրեւ աւուրս քառասուն այսու նեղէր զնոսա, եւ ոչ լուաւ ի նոցանէ բան թուլութեան, այլ իմն ած զմտաւ, եթէ ոք յիւրոց ծառայիցն գաղտ եգիտ ինչ ի նոցանէ եւ ի ծածուկ տայցէ նոցա կերակուր:

 2:27 When he had tormented them in this way for forty days but had heard no word of vacillation from them, he thought that one of his own servants had secretly received something from them and might have given them food on the sly:

2:28 Ինքն երթեալ կնքէր զերդ եւ զդուռն բանդին, եւ զկարգեալ ռոճիկն տայր յիւր հաւատարիմսն տանել նոցա. եւ արար զայս աւուրս հնգետասան:

 2:28 He went himself and sealed the skylight and door of the prison, and had men he trusted take the allotted ration to them. He did this for fifteen days:

2:29 Սակայն եւ այնպէս երանելիքն ոչ ինչ շտապեալ տագնապեցան. այլ մեծաւ համբերութեամբ տանէին զճգնութիւնն, եւ անդադար սաղմոսիւք կային ի հանապազորդ պաշտամանն. եւ ի կատարել աղաւթիցն զուարթագին գոհանալով՝ սակաւիկ մի հանգչէին ի գետնախշտի յանկողինսն:

 2:29 Nonetheless, the blessed ones were in no way oppressed or troubled. Rather, with great patience they endured this austerity and with unceasing psalms performed the daily service. At the completion of their prayers they would rest for a while in joyful gratitude, with the hard ground as their bed:

2:30 Իսկ պահապանքն որ ի վերայ կապելոցն կային, յոյժ էին զարմացեալ ընդ առողջութիւն անհիւանդութեան նոցա, իբրեւ լսէին զանդադար հնչումն ձայնիցն:

 2:30 But the guards in charge of the prisoners were greatly astonished at their sound health when they heard the ceaseless sound of their voices:

2:31 Վասն այնորիկ պատմեցին յականջս մոգպետին եւ ասեն. «Ոչ են արքն այն լոկ առանց մեծի զաւրութեան. զի եթէ պղնձի մարմինք ունէին նոքա, արդ լուծեալ էր ի գէճ խոնաւոյ անտի:

 2:31 Therefore, they reported to the chief-magus and note: “These are not ordinary men without great power. For even if their bodies were of bronze they would have decayed from the humid dampness:

2:32 Բազում ժամանակք են մեր, զի յանձն է մեզ պահպանութիւն բանտիս. ոչ յիշեմք՝ եթէ ի կապելոց ոք ամսաւրեայ ժամանակ կեցեալ է ի տանդ յայդմիկ:

 2:32 It is a long time that the guarding of this prison has been entrusted to us, but we do not remember any prisoner living for a month in this dungeon:

2:33 Արդ մեք ասեմք քեզ. եթէ առեր հրաման վասն մահու նոցա եւ սպանանես, դու գիտես. ապա թէ ոչ, պահել յանձն արարաւ քեզ եւ ոչ դատել զնոսա, չարաչար վտանգ է կապելոցն:

 2:33 Now we say to you: If you have received a command for their death and you kill them, you know what you are doing. But on the other hand, if you have been detailed to guard and not condemn them, then the prisoners are in terrible danger:

2:34 Նա եւ մեք զահի հարեալ եմք եւ յոյժ երկնչիմք, յորժամ տեսանեմք զայնպիսի անհնարին նեղութիւնս:

 2:34 Furthermore, we are awestruck and very fearful when we see such unbearable afflictions:

2:35 Եւ իբրեւ զայս լուաւ մոգպետն, յարուցեալ ինքնին երթայր ի մէջ գիշերին յերդ բանտին:

 2:35 When the chief-magus heard this, he arose and went himself in the middle of the night to the dungeon skylight:

2:36 Եւ հայեցեալ ի ներքս ընդ մութ գիշերոյն, այն ինչ լինէր նոցա ի պաշտամանէն հանգչել, եւ տեսանէր զանձն իւրաքանչիւր կապելոցն, զի իբրեւ զկանթեղ անշիջանելի վառեալ բորբոքէր:

 2:36 Looking inside through the evening gloom, while they were resting from their worship, he saw each one of the prisoners shining like an inextinguishable lamp:

2:37 Զահի մեծի հարաւ, եւ ասէր ընդ միտս իւր. «Զի՞նչ է այս մեծ սքանչելիքս. աստուածք մեր ուրեմն եկեալ իջեալ են ի բանտս, եւ նոցա փառաւորութիւնն լուցեալ բորբոքի:

 2:37 Greatly terrified, he said to himself: “What is this great miracle? Our gods then have descended into this prison and their glory has taken fire:

2:38 Եւ եթէ նոքա առ սոսա ոչ մերձենան, մարդոյ լոկոյ անհնարին է զայսպիսի պայծառութիւն լուսոյ զգենուլ:

 2:38 If they are not close to them, it is impossible for a mere man to be clothed in such glorious light:

2:39 Իմ այսպէս լուեալ էր վասն կեշտիս այսորիկ, եթէ առ յոյժ յիմարութեանն մոլորեալ են, եւ ստութեամբ կերպարանին յաչս տգէտ մարդկան. թերեւս եւ այս տեսիլ այնպէս ինչ երեւեցաւ ինձ:

 2:39 I have so heard about this sect that they are deranged in their great folly and take on false forms in the eyes of ignorant men. Perhaps this was some such vision that appeared to me:

2:40 Եւ ոչ կարէր համաւրէն կալ ի վերայ իրացն երեւման:

 2:40 He was totally unable to understand the reality of the vision:

2:41 Եւ մինչդեռ յայսմ մտաց խորհրդի էր, դարձեալ սուրբքն յիւրաքանչիւր խշտեկացն կանգնեցան կացին ի սովորական պաշտամանն:

 2:41 And while he was thus reflecting, the saints again rose from each one’s pallet for the customary worship:

2:42 Յայնժամ ճշմարտեալ գիտաց մոգպետն. եթէ ոչ այլ ընդ այլոյ տեսանէր՝ որ երեւեցաւն նմա, այլ ի նոցունց յանձանց փայլէր լուսաւորութիւնն:

 2:42 Then the chief-magus truly realized that what had appeared to him he had not seen in a confused way, but the illumination was emanating from their very selves:

2:43 Յայնժամ կրկին անգամ զահի հարաւ եւ ասէ. «Ո՞ւմ ի կապելոցն եղեւ այսպիսի յայտնութիւն. ես եւ ոչ զմի ոք ոչ գիտեմ, եւ ոչ լուեալ է իմ ի հարցն յառաջնոց:

 2:43 Then for the second time he was terror-struck and note: “On which prisoner ever appeared such an apparition? I know of no one else nor have I heard from our ancestors:

2:44 Եւ քանզի անհնարին շարժեցաւ ի մեծ սքանչելեացն, եւ դողացին ամենայն մարմինքն, եւ թմբրեալ կիսամեռ լինէր ի վերայ տանեացն մինչեւ յառաւաւտն. եւ ի ծագել լուսոյն իբրեւ զբազմաւրեայ հիւանդ յարուցեալ երթայր ի վանս իւր, այլ եւ ոչ ումեք իշխեաց ամենեւին պատմել զոր ինչ ետեսն:

 2:44 And because he was horribly shaken by the great miracle and his whole body was trembling, he remained on the roof stupefied and half-dead until morning. When day dawned, like one ill for many days he arose and went to his lodging, but was quite unable to tell anyone at all what he had seen:

2:45 Կոչեաց առ իւր զպահապանսն եւ ասէ ցնոսա. «Երթայք հանէք զկապեալսն ի վերնատուն մի ցամաքագոյն, եւ անդ պահեցէք զնոսա զգուշութեամբ, որպէս եւ ասացէքն:

 2:45 He summoned the guards and said to them: “Go and take the prisoners to a really dry upper-room and guard them there carefully, as you suggested:

2:46 Մի ոմն ի դահճաց անտի, իբրեւ լուաւ զհրամանս մոգպետին, փութով ընթացեալ երթայր, իբրեւ մեծ իմն աւետիս տանէր նոցա:

 2:46 One of the executioners, on hearing the chief-magus’ orders, hastily ran and informed them as if it were great news:

2:47 Հրամայեաց ձեզ, ասէ, ելանել ի ցամաք վերնատուն մի. արիք վաղվաղակի, եւ մի՛ հեղգայք, քանզի եւ մեք իսկ պաղատեցաք վասն ձերոյ տառապանացդ:

 2:47 He has ordered you,” he said, “to move to a dry upper-room. Arise quickly, do not be slow, for even we pleaded with him about your misery:

2:48 Իսկ սուրբն Յովսէփ հեզաբար սկսաւ խաւսել ընդ դահճին եւ ասէ. «Երթ եւ ասա ցյիմար առաջնորդն ձեր. չէ լուեալ քո վասն հանդերձեալ գալստեան Տեառն մերոյ եւ կամ վասն հրաշակերտ շինուածոցն, որք մեզ կան պահին ի սկզբանէ պատրաստութեամբ, վասն որոյ դիւրաւ համբերեմք մեծի նեղութեանս առ սէր այնր յուսոյ՝ զոր տեսանեմք:

 2:48 But the saintly Joseph began to speak in a gentle way to the executioner, saying; “Go and say to your foolish leader: Have you not heard about the future coming of our Lord or about the wonderful mansions that are reserved for us in readiness from the beginning? Therefore, we easily endure this great tribulation for the love of that hope which we shall see:

2:49 Դու բարւոք արարեր, զի արգահատեցեր մեծի նեղութեանս մարմնոյ. այլ ոչինչ եմք ձանձրացեալք իբրեւ զանաստուած ոք, որ չիք այլ ինչ յոյս ի միտս նորա քան որ երեւինս:

 2:49 You did well to have pity for the great tribulation of our bodies. But we are not at all fatigued like some godless person who has no other hope in his mind than what is visible:

2:50 Այլ մեք առ սէր Քրիստոսին մերոյ՝ ընդ այս յոյժ եմք խնդացեալ, եւ կատարեալ պարգեւս զսա իսկ համարիմք, զի ժամանակեայ վշտաւքս զանժամանակեան երանութիւնսն ժառանգեսցուք:

 2:50 But we, for love of our Christ, greatly rejoice at this, and we even consider it to be a perfect favor so that we may inherit eternal blessings by these temporary tribulations:
