54:0 Չուէր այնուհետեւ ամբարապետն Վեհդենշապուհ հանդերձ քահանայիւքն ի Նիւշապհոյ, ի վեցերորդ ժամու աւուրն, ընդ ճանապարհն որ ելանէ ի Վրկանն:	54:0 At the sixth hour of the day, Vehdenshapuh and the priests left Niwshapuh, setting out on the road leading to Hyrcania:
54:1 Եւ լուեալ զայս առն միոյ վաճառականի, որ էր ազգաւ Խուժիկ, որոյ ըստ աւրինի վաճառականութեան շատ անգամ ճանապարհորդեալ էր ի Հայս, որ եւ զլեզու հայերէն խաւսից քաջ տեղեկաբար գիտէր. եւ էր ինքն այր ի մանկութենէ իւրմէ կեցեալ առաքինի վարուք, եղեալ որդի քրիստոսասէր եւ հաւատացեալ ծնողաց, որ եւ զերանելի քահանայսն Աստուծոյ եւ զնախարարսն Հայոց որ ի կապանսն էին` յոյժ ընտանութեամբ գիտէր:	54:1 This was learned by a merchant who was a Xuzhik by nationality, and who, in the custom of trade, had travelled to Armenia many times and who was extremely well versed in the Armenian language. (Xuzhik is P’arpec’i’s term for a native of Khuzistan). This man from childhood had been a model of virtue, and was the son of Christ-loving believing parents. He was on very intimate terms with the venerable priests of God and the Armenian naxarars who were in bondage:
54:2 առ որս եւ բազում ծախս յընչից եւ սպասաւորութիւն արարեալ էր, մինչ ի Վրկանին էին, ուշադրելով զամենայն աւր եւ ակն ունելով մասին նշխարաց սրբոցն ի կատարումն նոցա լինել արժանի:	54:2 He had rendered them many services and paid many of (their) expenses while they were still in Hyrcania, every day carefully watching so that he might be worthy (of possessing) a fragment of the remains of the saints:
54:3 Սորա լուեալ զհրաման թագաւորին` ճեպով եւ անյապաղ, ոչինչ զգացուցեալ ումեք, թողոյր եւ զգրաստ իւր եւ զկարասի ի մանկունս իւր եւ յընկերս, եւ իւր առեալ ի գրաստուց իւրոց գրաստս տոկունս եւ ուժեղս, եւ նմանեալ առն կարաւանի` գնայր ընդ ճանապարհ որ երթայր յԱպար աշխարհն, եւ ուղեկցեալ ճանապարհորդէր ընդ ամբարակապետին ընդ Վեհդենշապհոյ, ցուցանելով նմա, զճանապարհայնն եւ յաւթեւանս ուր հանգչէին` բազում արթնութեամբ շուտութիւնս. եւ հաճոյ եղեալ Վեհդենշապհոյ ամենայն գործ հպատակութեան Խուժկին` սիրէր զնա յոյժ եւ խնամարկելով ողջունէր. վասն զի Աստուած էր, որ յաջողէր զիրն:	54:3 Having heard of the king’s order, without delay he immediately entrusted his pack animals and baggage to his children and comrades, and, without telling anyone, took the most resistant and powerful of his pack animals. Resembling a man on a caravan, he took the road going to the land of Apar, accompanying the ambarakapet Vehdenshapuh, and pointing out to him the road and the lodging places where they might rest. He did this with prompt alertness, and Vehdenshapuh, pleased with all the services of the Xuzhik, liked him a great deal and was solicitous about his well-being. For it was God Who was furthering this matter:
54:4 Եւ եղեալ համարձակապէս յընդունելութեան մեծի իշխանին Խուժիկն` հարցանէր առ ի սթափելոյ ամբարապետն զԽուժիկն յաղագս գեղջն նորա եւ ծնողացն, թէ ո՛րպիսիք էին եւ ուստի՛:	54:4 Thus, having boldly found favor with the great prince, the Xuzhik was asked to entertain the ambarakpet by telling him about his village and parents, what kind of people they were, and where they were from:
54:5 Եւ Խուժիկն պատճառադրելով խաւսէր ընդ նմա այլաբանութիւնս, սուտ պատճառս եւ դիպողս ըստ առաջարկելոյ իրացն գործոցն:	54:5 The Xuzhik studiously altered the facts about his past, saying:
54:6 Որդի եղեալ եմ ես, ասէ, ծնողաց աւրինաւորաց, որք ի նախնեաց իւրեանց կրակի եւ արեգական հաւատարմապէս եղեալ են ծառայք, որոց զիս ի նոսա յանձնեալ է ի մանկութենէ իմմէ, եւ նոցա պահպանութեամբն կացեալ եմ ի միջի մինչեւ ցայսաւր եւ կամ, ճանաչելով յայտնապէս յանձին իմում զաստուածոցն աւգնականութիւն:	54:6 I am the son of believing parents who, as their ancestors, were loyal servants of the fire and sun, and through them, from my childhood, I was committed to the same. With their protection I have lived to the present day and exist clearly recognizing the assistance of the gods:
54:7 Յիշելով երանելւոյ Խուժկին զպատճառադրութիւնսն վարդապետին հեթանոսաց Պաւղոսի, որ երբեմն հաւատովն փարիսեցի լինէր, եւ դարձեալ այլուր հռոմայեցի. որ ոչ էր յայսցանէ ի ժամուն եւ ոչ մի, այլ հաւատովք` Աւետարանին քարոզ էր եւ վարդապետ, եւ քաղաքաւ` ի Կիւլիկեցւոց գաւառէն էր, տարսոնացի, մանաւանդ թէ սուրբ եւ հոգեղէն վերին զաւրացն էր դասակից. բայց զմիտս լսողացն առ վայր մի սայթաքեցուցանէր այսր անդր, զի զճշմարտութիւն աճեցուցեալ հաստատեսցէ:	54:7 The venerable Xuzhik recalled the pretexts of Paul, the vardapet to the pagans, who, at times was a Pharisee and elsewhere a Roman (though according to the Gospel, the vardapet preached in, and was from, the city of Tarsus in the district of Cilicia, being of the same rank as the spiritual hosts above). (Paul) deluded the minds of his listeners temporarily so that he could establish truth and make it grow:
54:8 Այսպէս եւ երանելի Խուժիկն պատրողական բանիւք զմիտսն Վեհդենշապհոյ խնդացուցանէր ի ժամուն, որպէս զի զիւր ընթացիցն տենչանս տարեալ ի գլուխ՝ կատարեսցէ ըստ կամի:	54:8 In the same way the venerable Xuzhik did this, delighting Vehdenshapuh for the moment with false statements, so that what he longed to accomplish might indeed be done as he wished:
54:9 Իսկ ամբարապետն Վեհդենշապուհ որպէս թէ յաստուածոց համարէր զպատահումն նմա Խուժկին, տեսանելով զայրն յամենայնի աջողակ, եւ առաւել վարկանէր հաւատարիմ եւ ըմբոն գործոց իրացն` յոր երթայր. վասն որոյ եւ չ տայր թոյլ առն եւ ոչ ժամ մի հեռանալ յիւրմէ, այլ ի տուէ եւ ի գիշերի մաւտ ունէր առ իւր բազում յարգանաւք եւ սիրով. եւ հաւատայր նմա զխորհուրդ թագաւորին եւ զպէտս գործոյն` յոր երթայր. վասն զի ըստ յառաջագոյն ասացելոցն, Աստուած էր որ տնտեսէր զիրսն ըստ իւրոց կամացն, ի քակտումն եւ յամաւթ դասու անաւրինացն, եւ յաւգուտ եւ ի փառս եկեղեցւոյ իւրոյ սրբոյ:	54:9 As for the ambarapet, Vehdenshapuh, he felt his meeting with the Xuzhik was (a favor) of the gods. Seeing that the man was adept in everything, (Vehdenshapuh) esteemed him yet more as loyal and suitable for the task he had embarked upon. Consequently, he did not permit the man to quit his side for a moment, day or night, but kept him with him in great honor and affection. (Vehdenshapuh) confided to him the king’s plan and the needs of the work he was going to do. For as has been said above, God was seeing to matters according to His will, for the destruction and embarassment of the ranks of the impious and to the benefit and glory of His blessed Church:
54:10 Եւ կատարէր բանն սուրբ Հոգւոյն որ ասէր, թէ Խորհեցան, եւ ոչ ինեւ, եւ դաշինս կռեցին, եւ ոչ իմով բանիւ. եւ սաղմոսերգն ասէ. Խորհեցան խորհուրդ` զոր ոչ կարացին հաստատել:	54:10 The word of the holy Spirit was fulfilled which note: “They made a plan, but not mine,” and the psalmist who note: “They made a plan but were unable to realize it:
54:11 Ապա պատճառէր երանելի Խուժիկն պէտս ինչ զիւր տեսանել այլուր, եւ խնդրէր աղաչելով հրաժեշտ ի Վեհդենշապհոյ. որով յամենայն աւգտակար իրաց եւ կարծեաց հեռացուցեալ զմիտս ամբարակապետին` առաւել հաւատարմագոյն ցուցանէր նմա զինքն, գիտելով յազդեցութենէ սուրբ Հոգւոյն, եթէ ոչ տայ թոյլ Աստուած արձակել զնա նմա:	54:11 Then the venerable Xuzhik pretended to excuse himself saying that his needs would take him elsewhere, and he entreated Vehdenshapuh to bid him farewell. Thereby hoping to put off the ambarakapet’s plan, he revealed himself as yet more trustworthy, realizing through the influence of the holy Spirit that God would not allow (Vehdenshapuh) to let him go:
54:12 Իսկ Վեհդենշապուհ եւ բնաւ իսկ ոչ առնոյր յանձն` լսել բանից խուժկին, այլ ասէր ցնա գաղտ, եթէ «Դու որ աւրինաւք սնեալ ես եւ կեաս ի փառս կրակաց, ո՞չ կաս առ իս յաւժարութեամբ եւ տեսանես զկորուստ անաւրէն կրակասպան մահապարտացն, եւ ուրախանաս:	54:12 Indeed, Vehdenshapuh refused even to listen to Xuzhik but rather said to him: “Would not someone as yourself, nourished in the faith and alive due to the glory of the fires, enthusiastically remain with me to watch the destruction of infidel men condemned to death for killing the fire. And would you not rejoice:
54:13 Եւ երանելւոյ Խուժկին լուեալ զայնպիսի բանս յամբարապետէն` մեծաւ երկրպագութեամբ շնորհ ունէր սիրոյն Վեհդենշապհոյ. այլ ի սրտի իւրում փառս տալով աւրհնէր զամենազաւրն եւ զյարդարիչն ամենայնի զԱստուած, որ տայրն խաւսել ամբարակապետին եւ աղաչել զգուշակ նշխարացն սրբոցն` երթալ ընդ նոսա ի տեղի նահատակացն Աստուծոյ. այն որ լինելոց էր ցրիչ եւ խայտառակիչ թագաւորին հրամանի, եւ ցուցակ եւ բաշխիչ մեծի եւ երկնաւոր գանձու սրբոցն:	54:13 When the venerable Xuzhik heard all of these words from the ambarapet, with great adoration he thanked Vehdenshapuh for the favor. But in his heart he glorified and blessed the most powerful giver of justice, God, Who caused the ambarakapet to speak. (Xuzhik) begged (God) for a fragment of the saints’ relics, and that he could go to the place where God’s martyrs were to die, along with them. Such would be the disperser and disgracer of the king’s order, and a symbol and share of the great heavenly treasure of the saints:
54:14 Իսկ երանելւոյ Խուժկին համբարձեալ առ տէր Աստուած զաղաւթս սրտի իւրոյ` խնդրէր ի բարձրելոյն շնորհել նմա ուշ եւ լայնութիւն սրտի, որով արժանի լիցի գրել հաւաստեաւ ի տախտակս մտաց իւրոց, որպէս յարձանագրի, զամենայն հարցմունս բռնաւորացն եւ զպատասխանիսն եւ զաղաւթսն, զոր իւրաքանչիւր ոք ի սրբոցն ի ժամ կատարմանն մատուցանէր Աստուծոյ. որպէս զի պատմել ճշմարտապէս կարասցէ ի կարգի առ ի յիշումն ամենայն հաւատացելոց լսողաց յազգս յաւիտենից:	54:14 The venerable Xuzhik lifted the prayers of his heart to the lord God, beseeching Him on high to grant him the sense and breadth of the heart to be deserving to accurately inscribe in his mind all the questions asked by the tyrants as well as the replies and prayers of each one of the saints at the time of their death and passage to God, so that later he might accurately narrate (these events) in order, to be remembered by all believers until eternity:
54:15 Եւ ընկալեալ ի յախորժալուր ի տուչէն զգիւտ մաղթանաւք խնդրոյն իւրոյ` պատմել անդադար ցնծալից սրտիւ ամենայն ուղղափառ ժողովրդոց յամենայն տեղիս, ի զարմացումն եւ ի փառս անուանն Քրիստոսի:	54:15 The Provider happily granted his prayers to narrate with a perpetually joyful heart to all the orthodox peoples everywhere (what took place), to the amazement (of all) and the glorification of Christ’s name:
