56:0 Եւ հրամայեաց սրբոյն Սահակայ ասել ցնոսա, թէ «Մի՛ անսայք անմիտ բանից դորա, եւ զանձինս ձեր յայդպիսի խաւլ խրատուէ ի բա՛ց կալայք եւ մարդկաբար զկեանս ընտրեցէք քան զմահ:

 56:0 Vehdenshapuh ordered the blessed Sahak to tell them: “Do not listen to his foolish words, stand back from such senseless advice, and like a human, choose life over death:

56:1 Եւ դա որ ինքն այժմ իշխեաց խաւսել զայդպիսի բանս մահապարտութեան` վասն զի մեծամեղ է եւ չէ արժանի կելոյ` իւր իսկ վատ գործքն չտան դմա կեալ:

 56:1 He who now dared to say such words deserving death is very sinful, unworthy of life. His bad deeds do not permit him to live:

56:2 Իսկ դուք թէպէտ եւ էք տակաւին ինչ վնասակարք, եւ զկամս թագաւորին եւեթ առնէք եւ արեգականն երկիր պագանէք` հրամայեաց զվնասն թողուլ ձեզ եւ զձեզ պատուով եւ ողջանդամ ի տունս ձեր արձակել:

 56:2 But as for you, although you are still somewhat guilty, if you would only submit to the king’s wishes and worship the sun, he has ordered that your guilt is to be forgiven and you should be sent to your homes well and with honor:

56:3 Հրամայէին եւս Վեհդենշապուհ եւ այլ հաւատարիմքն որ ընդ նմայն էին` սրբոյն Սահակայ, ասել ցերանելի այրն Աստուծոյ Ղեւոնդ, թէ «Մեր լուեալ է վասն քո, թէ աւրինաց քրիստոնէից իբրեւ զքեզ ոք տեղեակ չէ, եւ ի քո խրատուէ աւելի եւս կորեաւ աշխարհն Հայոց. արդ` այդպիսի մեծ եւ իմաստուն մտաց պարտ է ճանաչել զարքայից արքայի զբարերարութիւնն, զի զայնչափ զվնասն թողու ձեզ եւ ձեզ ճշմարիտ աստուած ծանուցանէ:

 56:3 Then Vehdenshapuh and the loyal men with him further commanded the blessed Sahak to say to the venerable man of God, Ghewond: “We have heard that no one is as knowledgeable in the Christian faith as you, and that as a result of your counsel the land of Armenia was ruined yet more. Now such a great and wise intellect must recognize the benevolence of the king of kings to (offer to) forgive the great amount of guilt which you have, and to acquaint you with the true god:

56:4 Արդ` որպէս եղեր խրատատու, եւ բազումք մեռան ի քո առնելոյ` լե՛ր այժմ խրատատու կենաց, եւ թող կեան եւ դոքա եւ այլ բազում անթիւ անձինք. ասա՛ ցդոսա, զի պագցեն արեգականն երկիր եւ կեցցեն. եւ դու այնպիսի պատիւս գտանես ի թագաւորէն, որովք անուանի լինիս ի քում աշխարհին եւ յամենայն ազգս:

 56:4 Now, just as you were a counselor, and many died from your actions, be now a counselor of life, and permit them and countless other individuals to live. Tell them to worship the sun and live, and you shall find so much honor from the king that you will be renowned in your land and among all peoples:

56:5 Եւ սուրբ եպիսկոպոսն Սահակ երկայնմտութեամբ եւ ծաղրելով թարգմանէր առ վայր մի սրբոցն զամենայն բանս ամբարակապետին եւ զնորուն անաւրէն գործակցացն, որպէս զի ծանուսցէ անաւրինացն պատասխանեաւք սրբոցն` զիւրաքանչիւր անձին զերանելեացն զկամս եւ զփափագ եւ զանշարժ հաստատութիւն նոցա ի հաւատն:

 56:5 The holy bishop Sahak patiently suffering and ridiculing, immediately translated all of these words of the ambarakapet and his impious associates for the saints so that the impious ones would know through the saints’ responses the will, desire and unshakable firmness of each one’s faith:

56:6 Եւ սրբոյ առն Աստուծոյ Ղեւոնդի սկսեալ խաւսել առանձինն ընդ սրբոյն Սահակայ` ասէ, թէ «Մեզ դոցա պատասխանի այնքան պարտ է առնել` որչափ արար պատասխանի Փրկիչն Պիղատոսի յատենին:

 56:6 The holy man of God, Ghewond, began to speak with saint Sahak alone, saying: “We must respond to their question just as the Savior responded to Pilate at court:

56:7 Բայց զի ծանուսցուք աներկիւղ զցանկութեանս մերոյ զխնդիրն` ասա՛ ցդոսա. «Դուք ասացէք աւադիկ` զոր ինչ լուեալ է ձեր վասն իմ, թէ աւրինացն մերոց տեղեակ եմ, եւ բազմութեան ժողովրդոց եղեալ եմ ուսուցիչ. ցուցանէ ձեզ տիոց իմոց մերձաւորութիւն ի կատարումն:

 56:7 Now so that you fearlessly inform them about the question of our demand, tell them, ’As for what you have heard about me, that I am knowledgeable about our faith (it is true), I have been the teacher of many people, (and) this should show you that I am at the age of discretion:

56:8 Եւ արդ` զընտրողութիւն լաւ գիտութեան իմոյ, որում դուք իսկ վկայէք, զի ուսեալ եմ յԱստուծոյ եւ ոչ ի մարդոյ, այսաւր յաղագս երկիւղի մահկանացու եւ ապշեալ մարդոյ մոռացեալ փոխանակիցե՞մ եւ կորնչի՞մ - քաւ լիցի - եւ լուեալ յանդիմանիցիմ բանիւն, թէ Որ ուսուցեր զբազումս` զանձն քո ոչ ուսուցեր:

 56:8 As for your statement that I have good learning, as you yourselves testify, I have learned (all) from God and not from man. Today, out of mental fear and crazed humanity, should I change this and be lost? God forbid! I counter with the words: ’What you preach you do not yourself apply. ’:

56:9 Եւ վասն պատուի եւ փառաց զոր խոստանայքդ տալ` մեզ մի՛ լիցի առնուլ զպատիւ ի հողեղէն եւ ի մահկանացու մարդոյ, զոր ցեց եւ ուտիճ ապականէ եւ գող ական հատանէ եւ տանի. որ զգեցեալ եմք զփառս եւ զպատիւս յերկնաւոր եւ յանմահ աջոյն Բարձրելոյ, զոր ոչ երկինք եւ ոչ երկիր եւ կամ որ ի նոսա պատուականութիւնք են` արժել ոչ կարեն:

 56:9 As for the honor and glory which you promise to give, God forbid that we should accept honor from mortal, earthen man, who is polluted by the worm and the grub, and whom the thief digs up and carries away. We cannot compare this to the glory and heavenly honor (granted) by the eternal right hand of the One on High, for neither Heaven nor earth nor what is precious therein, can compare:

56:10 Մի ինչ պակաս է ի մեր յերանելի փառաւորութենէս, - բաժակ մահուդ, որում իբրեւ զպասքեալ ծարաւիս փութամք ըմպել:

 56:10 There is but one thing lacking from our blessed glorification, and that is the cup of death, which we hurry to drink as thirsty men:

56:11 Արբուցէ՛ք վաղվաղակի, եւ թող ուրախացեալք զերծանիմք յերերալից ախտարակաց կենցաղոյս. եւ մի՛ եւս այլ յերկարեալ ձգտէք զանմիտ եւ զվնասակար բանս բանդագուշեալ թագաւորին ձերոյ:

 56:11 Let us drink quickly, and let us joyfully escape from this transitory diseased life. And do not attempt to prolong the senseless and damaging words of your king who is predestined to prison:

56:12 Եւ սրբոյ առն Աստուծոյ Ղեւոնդի կատարեալ զիւր պատասխանիսն` աղաչեցին զսուրբ եպիսկոպոսն զՍահակ երանելի երէցն Մուշէ եւ երանելի երէցն Արշէն եւ երանելի սարկաւագն Քաջաջ` ասել ցանաւրէն իշխանն եւ նոցա բանիւ, թէ «Զոր ինչ ասացին սուրբ վարդապետքն մեր եւ հոգեւոր հարքս տէր Յովսէփ եւ տէր Ղեւոնդ` դոյն են մեր կամք եւ խնդիրք. կատարեցէ՛ք վաղվաղակի յոր եկեալդ էք, եւ մի՛ յապաղէք. եւ խնդրեմք յԱստուծոյ պարգեւել մեզ եւ արժանի առնել զմեզ յաւիտենական պատուոյն եւ երկնից արքայութեանն:

 56:12 When the blessed man of God, Ghewond, had finished his reply, the holy presbyters Mushe and Arshen and the holy deacon K’ajaj beseeched the blessed bishop Sahak to say to the impious prince: “What our holy vardapets and spiritual fathers lord Yovsep’ and lord Ghewond have said, is also our will and concern. Do quickly what you came here to do, and delay not. We ask that God grant us and find us deserving of eternal honor and the Heavenly Kingdom:

56:13 Եւ լուեալ զայս Վեհդենշապուհ եւ անաւրէն գործակցացն եւ ի սրտմտութիւն բարկութեան գրգռեալք` կամեցան եւ այլ պատրողական բանս եւ խաւսս ընդունայնս խաւսել ընդ սուրբ նահատակսն, կարծեցեալք թերեւս կարասցեն ճեղքել զոք ի գնդէ անքակ միաբանութեանն. որում անհնար էր լինել. սկսան ստիպել եւ այլ զսուրբ եպիսկոպոսն Սահակ, զի թարգմանեսցէ նոցա եւ այլ զոր ինչ կամիցին խաւսել ընդ սուրբսն:

 56:13 When Vehdenshapuh and his impious collaborators heard this they were transported with rage, and wanted to say other false and futile words with the blessed champions, thinking that they could yet dislodge one person from this brigade of unshakable union. But this was impossible. They commenced forcing the holy bishop Sahak to translate what they wanted to say to the holy men:

56:14 Եւ սրբոյ եպիսկոպոսին Սահակայ պատասխանի տուեալ ասէ ցՎեհդենշապուհ եւ ցայլ գործակիցս նոցա, թէ «Ես որ մինչեւ ցայժմս կամակատար ծանուցայ ձեզ եւ զասացեալն ի ձէնջ թարգմանեցի սրբոցս` իբրեւ ոչ եթէ ձեզ եւ կամ պակշոտեալ բանից թագաւորին ձերոյ կամեցայ արբանեկել:

 56:14 But the blessed bishop Sahak said to Vehdenshapuh and to their other accomplices: “To now, although I have agreed to familiarize you with what was said and to translate what you have said to the saints, I did not want to associate myself with either you or the obscene words of your king:

56:15 քանզի զի՞նչ արդեաւք հարկ ի վերայ կայ մարդոյ, որոյ միտք իւր առ իւր են եւ զգայ խելաց իւրոց, զայդպիսի զձեր զբանդագուշանաց բանս` իւր իսկ լսել, թող թէ եւ յականջս այսպիսի իմաստուն եւ խորհրդական մարդոց լսելի առնել. բայց այսքան միայն` զի առաւել եւս ծանիցի ձեր յիմարութեանդ նշաւականք, եւ ի մեզ զաւրացեալ հաստատեսցի ճշմարիտ եւ աստուածուսոյց քարոզութեանն մերոյ անշարժութիւնն:

 56:15 For what use is there for rational men who still have their senses to hear your words, the words of a jail-bird, if indeed the ears or senses of such men could put up with it? On the contrary, (such talk) merely serves to acquaint you with the foolishness of your position, and (serves to) strengthen us in the unshakable truth of our confession, which was learned from God:
