78:0 Եւ եկեալ ժամանակ ծաղկոցաց գարնանւոյն աւդոյն շնչմանց, աւետաւոր ջերմութեանց մերկոցն չքաւորաց` եկեալ հասանէր յանկարծակի յերկիրս Հայոց Զառմիհր Հազարաւուխտ, սաստիկ եւ բազում այրընտիր զաւրաւք. դիմեալ անցանէր ստիպով ընդ կամուրջ գետոյն Երասխայ, եւ ի գիւղաքաղաքին որ կոչի Արտաշատ` բանակէր այն աւր:

78:0 When it was the blooming time of spring and the breezes brought welcome warmth to the naked paupers, suddenly Zarmihr Hazarawuxt with a multitudinous, enormous force of select men, reached the country of Armenia. Urgently crossing over the bridge on the Arax River, he encamped that day in the town called Artashat:

78:1 Քանզի զգացուցեալ էր նմա քաջ տեղեկութեամբ ուխտանենգացն յաշխարհէս Հայոց` զերթն կիսոյ գնդին Հայոց ի Վիրս, եւ թէ սպարապետն Հայոց Վահան Մամիկոնեան լոկ թուով նախարարաւք եւ սակաւ այրուձիով ի յոստանիդ:

78:1 For he had been well informed by the oath-breakers about the departure of half of the Armenian brigade to Iberia (Georgia), and that Vahan Mamikonean, the sparapet of Armenia, was at the ostan with but few naxarars and only a few select cavalrymen:

78:2 Յորոց վերայ հասեալ քո այսչափ ընտիր բազմութեամբ, թէպէտ եւ եդեալ նոցա զանձինս ի մահ, չկարիցես առնել ձերբակալս այդչափ բազմութեամբ այրուձիոյ` այլ երեքկնակի եւ չորեքկնակի պատեալ պաշարեալ զնոսա` հանես ընդ սուր զամենեսեան. եւ կատարեալ տանիս ի գլուխ զիրս գործոյս աշխատութեան, եւ դու պատուեալ փառաւորիս ի թագաւորէն, եւ մեք հանգչիմք յերերագին աշխատութենէս յայսմանէ:

78:2 When you go against them with such a select multitude, even though they are prepared to die, they will be unable to arrest such a mass of cavalry. No, you will outnumber them by three or four times, and can put them all to the sword. Then you will complete the assignment and will be enveloped in the king’s glory and we shall rest from this very protracted affair:

78:3 Եւ լուեալ զայսպիսի բանս Հազարաւուխտոյ եւ այլ աւագացն որ ընդ նմայն էին` առաւել եւս ուրախանային, եւ ճեպով ի վաղիւն դիմէր ի վերայ զաւրավարին Հայոց Վահանայ Մամիկոնէի եւ զաւրացն որ ընդ նմայն էին ի ժամուն:

78:3 When Hazarawuxt and the other awag’s with him heard these words, they were more delighted, and the next morning they speedily went against Armenia’s general, Vahan Mamikonean, and the troops with him at the time:

78:4 Եւ հասեալք մաւտ ի քաղաքն Դուին` յաւրինէր Հազարաւուխտ զճակատն ըստ աւրինի գործոյ պատերազմին, եւ կարգեալ զռազմն ի միջոցէ մայրւոյն, որում Խոսրովակերտն ասեն` անցուցանէր ի վերայ դաստակերտին, մինչեւ ի լեռնակողմնն զոր Ջրվէժն կոչեն:

78:4 Having approached the city of Duin, Hazarawuxt deployed the front( s) in war formation, and arrayed them in the midst of the forest called Xosrovakert. Then he passed against the dastakert as far as the side of the mountain called Jrvezh:

78:5 Եւ տեսեալ սպարապետին Հայոց Վահանայ զայսչափ բազմութիւն զաւրացն Պարսից, եւ այլ նախարարացն Հայոց որ ընդ նմա էին, եւ այլ ռամիկ այրուձիոյն Հայոց, թէպէտ եւ զանընդդիմակայ չափաւորութիւն իւրեանց գիտէին, տեսանելով ծովացեալ գնդաւն Պարսից զամենայն դաշտն առհասարակ` այլ սակայն եւ ոչ կարի զարհուրեալք փախչել փութային. այլ ըստ բաւականի զաւրուն իւրեանց բաժանեալ ի մի մի եւ յերկուս նախարարս` յարձակէին ի վերայ:

78:5 When Armenia’s sparapet, Vahan Mamikonean, and the other Armenian naxarars with him and the rhamik cavalrymen of Armenia saw such a multitude of Iranian troops which filled the entire plain with the Iranian brigade billowing like an ocean—even though they knew that they could not resist them—nonetheless though astonished, they did not turn in flight. Rather, in accordance with the competency of their force, the naxarars divided into groups of two or one and attacked:

78:6 Եւ առեալ քաջասրտաբար մասն ի գնդէն Պարսից` բազում արս ընտիրս դիաթաւալ յերկիր կործանէին, եւ իւրեանց դարձուցեալ զերասանակս երիվարացն` գնացին ի բաց քաջաբար:

78:6 Valiantly taking a part of the Iranian brigade, they sent many select men hurtling dead to the ground, got hold of their swift horses, and bravely departed:

78:7 Վասն զի եւ քաջաբար փախուստ առն հզաւրի` սաստիկ ահ երկիւղի գուշակէ առ միւսանգամ գործ թշնամեացն գնդի. որ եղեալ առ յապա երեւեցաւ բազմաց, եւ ճաշակեալ առին զհամ եւ զարմացան. մանաւանդ առաւել էր քան զայլսն. զոր եւ գիտաց քաջագոյն սնապարծ իշխանն Սիւնեաց Գդիհոն:

78:7 For the brave departure of the powerful man foretold great dread in the brigade regarding its future hostile operations. What had happened was made known to many and they sampled the taste of this, and were amazed, more so than others. This was very well known by the boastful prince of Siwnik’, Gdihon:

78:8 Բայց անդէն ի տեղւոջն որք ընտրեցին կամաւոր յաւժարութեամբ զմահ անձանց եւ նահատակեցան` երկուք արք ի նախարարացն Հայոց կռուեալք լաւաբար, եւ զքաջութիւն գործոյ ցուցեալ` երանելին Որդի ի տոհմէն Դիմաքսենից, եւ երանելին Քաջաջ ի տոհմէն Սահառունեաց, եդեալ զանձինս ի վերայ ուխտին սրբոյ` պսակեցան:

78:8 But as for those men who enthusiastically and willingly chose to remain there and were martyred, (among them were) two of the Armenian naxarars who fought well and displayed bravery: the venerable Ordi from the Dimak’sean tohm and the venerable K’ajaj from the Saharhunik’ tohm who gave their lives for the blessed covenant and were crowned:

78:9 Անդ չարաչար խոցոտին եւ փախչին զաւրքն Պարսից:

78:9 The Iranian troops wickedly stabbed and routed (the Vahaneans:

78:10 Եւ զսուրբ հայրապետն Հայոց տէր Յոհան ընկեցեալ ի ձիոյն` թողին կիսամահ:

78:10 The blessed patriarch of Armenia, lord Yohan, having been thrown from his horse was left there half-dead:

78:11 Վասն զի այնպէս ճեպով հասուցին սադրիչքն անաւրէնութեանն զՀազարաւուխտ ի վերայ Հայոց, զի եւ ոչ աւուրբ միով յառաջ ժամանեցին խոյս տալ ի քաղաքէն եւ անձին հոգալ, եւ ոչ ինքն կաթողիկոսն Յոհան:

78:11 For the provoker of impiety, Hazarawuxt, had come against the Armenians so rapidly that not even the kat’oghikos Yohan himself had a day to quit the city:

78:12 Այլ ամենազաւր գթութիւն Փրկչին Քրիստոսի ողորմեալ խնայեաց յուխտասէր հաւտն իւր, եւ ածեալ ողջ զհայրն սուրբ` եցոյց խաղաղութեամբ ժողովրդեան իւրում եւ ուրախացոյց:

78:12 However the almighty compassion of the Savior Christ pitied and spared his oath-loving flock and took the holy father away safely and peacefully displayed him to his people and made them happy:

78:13 Եւ ի նմին աւուր, յետ վճարելոյ գործոյ պատերազմին, գայր հասանէր սեպուհն
Մամիկոնէից Մուշեղ հանդերձ այրուձիովն որ էին ընդ նմա. եւ իբրեւ ոչ ինչ ժամանեալ յանբաւկ գործոյ պատերազմին պիտոյից` դարձեալ ընդ այլ փախստէիցն գնային ի բաց:

78:13 The same day, after the fighting was over, Mushegh, the sepuh of the Mamikoneans, and the cavalrymen with him arrived. Because they had not arrived in time to be of aid in the battle they turned and fled with the other fugitives:
