26:1 Արդ՝ եկին հասին նոքա յաշխարհն Կապուտկացւոց եւ գտին զՎրթանէս ի Կեսարացւոց քաղաքին, եւ զսուրբն Արիստակէս բնակեալ յանապատի, յիւրում մենաւորաստանին. ապա ոչ հաւանէր նա իջանել յանապատէ անտի. մինչեւ եղեւ ժողով բազմութեան քրիստոնէից, որք հաւանեցուցին զնա գնալ անտի. զի «Լաւ է, ասեն, քեզ գործ մշակութեանն Աստուծոյ՝ քան զայդ մենաւորութիւն բնակութեան յանապատի այդր:

 26:1 They arrived in the land of the Cappadocians and found Vrtanes in the city of Caesarea, and the blessed Aristakes dwelling in the desert in a retreat of his own. However, he did not agree to come down from the retreat until an assembly of many Christians convinced him to descend. They told him: “It is better for you to engage in God’s work than to remain living in that retreat:

26:2 Զորս այնուհետեւ եւ յուղարկեցին զնոսա անտի:

 26:2 And so, the messengers sent them off:

26:3 Իսկ նոքա եկին հասին յերկիրն Հայոց, եւ յանդիման ունէին զածեալսն, զերկոսին որդիսն Գրիգորի, առաջի թագաւորին. զորս առեալ թագաւորին՝ ինքնին նոքաւք հանդերձ ի խնդիր ելանէր սրբոյն Գրիգորի՝ ուր եւ գտցէ:

 26:3 Gregory’s sons arrived in the country of the Armenians. Then the messengers brought Gregory’s two sons into the king’s presence. The king took them along with him and went forth looking for saint Gregory - wherever they might find him:

26:4 Եւ եկեալ գտանէին ի Դարանաղեաց գաւառին, ի լերինն որ կոչի Մանեայ Այրք, յանապատին:

 26:4 They found him in the district of Daranaghiq, in a retreat on the mountain called the Caves of Mane’:

26:5 Ապա աղաչեաց երանելի թագաւորն Տրդատ զսուրբն Գրիգորիոս, զի փոխանակ այնր, զի ոչ հաւանեցաւ նա կալ եւ շրջել ընդ նմա, եւ սիրեաց զմենաւորութեան կեանս՝ ձեռնադրեսցէ եւ տացէ նմա եպիսկոպոս զսուրբ որդին իւր, զոր ետ ածել ինքն՝ զԱրիստակէս:

 26:5 Then the blessed king Trdat beseeched saint Gregory that - because he had not agreed to stay and circulate around with him, and since he loved the solitary life - he would, in exchange, ordain and give to the king as a bishop his son, Aristakes, whom Trdat had brought along:

26:6 Զոր ձեռնադրեաց յեպիսկոպոսութիւն փոխանակ իւր. որպէս ըստ գրեցելոյն ի դէպ, թէ Փոխանակ հարց եղիցին որդիք՝ կալ իշխան ի վերայ երկրի:

 26:6 And Gregory ordained him to the episcopacy in his place, as it is written “The sons will take their fathers’ place to rule over the land:

26:7 Որ առաւել եւս քան զհայրն վերագոյն երեւեցուցանէր զիւր վարդապետութիւնն առ հարբն. եւ յետ նորա կալաւ զտեղի հայրենեացն եւ անդէն նստաւ յաթոռ կաթողիկոսութեան Հայոց Մեծաց:

 26:7 Aristakes was even more successful than his father in his teachings, and after Gregory, Aristakes occupied his patrimonial position and sat on the throne of the katoghikosate of Greater Armenia:

26:8 Ապա եւ ինքն իսկ մեծն Գրիգորիոս «ելանէր զտեղեաւքն կարգելովք եւ զգաւառաւքն աշակերտելովք յաշխարհին Հայոց՝ զուարթացուցանել, զաւրացուցանել, նորոգել եւ հաստատել զամենեսեան:

 26:8 As for the great Gregory himself, he went around to the places he had put in order and the districts where he had taught in the land of the Armenians, to bring joy to the people, to strengthen, renew, and confirm everyone in the faith:

26:9 Եւ աստուածասէր թագաւորն Տրդատիոս բարեպաշտութեամբ սպասաւորեալ, ըստ աշակերտական հաւատոց ի Քրիստոս՝ երկիւղած գտանէր, որ եւ տեղեկացեալ եւ վարժեալ աստուածակեաց հրամանաւքն, եւ ցանկալի եղեալ աւրինապահ ընկալելովքն, եւ բարեաց աւրինակ ամենայն աշխարհի:

 26:9 Trdat, the God-loving king, piously served Gregory, teaching faith in Christ, being God-fearing and informed of the divine orders, and serving as an example of goodness to the entire land through his respect for and acceptance of the religious law:

26:10 Եւ անդէն ի նմին ուշ եդեալ փութով ընթերցուածոց աստուածեղէն գրոց:

 26:10 Moreover, King Trdat was diligent in the reading of Scripture:

26:11 Զի յունական աշխարհական դպրութեանն, երկնաւոր իմաստութեանն, յառաջագոյն էր տեղեակ, առաւել փիլիսոփայական մտաց հանճարագիտութեան հմուտ էր, զի ուսեալ էր զայն:

 26:11 For he was well acquainted with Greek secular literature, having previously studied it, being especially knowledgeable in the science of philosophical thought:

26:12 Արդ՝ ընկալեալ եւ զշնորհս երկնաւոր պարգեւացն, «որով առժամայն լուսաւորեալ եւ թեւակոխ թեւամուխ եղեալ աստուածատուր հրամանացն ի հանգամանս, եւ ամենայն պատրաստութեամբ զանձն յարդարեալ», «եւ ըստ աւետարանական չափոցն ի ծառայութիւն Աստուծոյ մարդասիրին դարձեալ:

 26:12 So he received the grace of the heavenly gifts whereby he was then illuminated, and he was completely devoted to the requirements of the divine commandments, and in great willingness accommodated himself to them, and according to the rule of the gospel turned to the service of the benevolent God:

26:13 Մերկացեալ այնուհետեւ զհեթանոսակիր ցանկութիւնսն, եւ առեալ զնշան պարծանաց խաչին յանձն իւր, եւ երթեալ զկնի ամենակեցոյց խաչելոյն՝ հաճել զհրամանացն պայման, զկնի խաչակիր գնդին Քրիստոսի աշակերտելոցն հետեւեալ:

 26:13 Thenceforth he stripped off pagan vices and accepted the sign of the cross of boasting, following the crucified Savior of all, fulfilling the demands of the commandments and following the crusading band of Christ’s disciples:

26:14 Եւ անձին իւրում եդեալ սահման պահաւք եւ տքնութեամբ «աղաւթս մշտնջենամռունչս եւ բազկատարած պաղատանս առ Աստուած, եւ արտասուս հանապազաբուղխս» վասն աշխարհին իւրոյ:

 26:14 He imposed upon himself fasts and vigils and unceasing prayers and supplications to God with arms outstretched, and ever-flowing tears for his country:

26:15 Նոյնպէս եւ վասն իւր խնդրէր, զի մի՛ յիշեսցին մեղքն որ յառաջին տգիտութեանն, յայնժամ զոր ի հեթանոսութեանն անդ գործէր:

 26:15 Similarly, he asked on his own behalf that his sins, committed in his earlier ignorance when he was a pagan, might not be remembered:

26:16 Եւ բազում եւ ամենայն ուժով նպաստաւորութիւն ընծայեցուցեալ աւետարանագործ վարդապետութեանն, եւ հնազանդութեամբ հպատակութիւն ցուցեալ եւ ծառայեալ ըստ Աւետարանին վայելչութեամբ». եւ այսպէս խրատեալ եւ զգաստացեալ կրաւնաւորական վարուք, ամենայն ուղղութեամբ յամենայն գործս բարութեանց առաւել եւս պայծառացուցանէր զվարդապետութեանն սատարութիւն:

 26:16 With great solicitude he assisted the work of the teaching of the gospel, showing willing help and happily serving according to the gospel. And thus, leading a reformed and sober and religious life, in all rectitude and in every good work he rendered glorious the task of teaching:

26:17 Իսկ մեծ արքեպիսկոպոսն երանելին Գրիգորիոս, սուրբ որդւովն իւրով Արիստակիսաւ եւ ամենայն երեւելի աւգնականաւքն, զամենայն աշակերտելովքն շրջէր, եւ հաստատէր զնոսա՝ կալ ի պատուիրանին ճշմարտութեան:

 26:17 Now the great archbishop, the blessed Gregory, with his holy son Aristakes and all their prominent assistants, circulated around with all his students and strengthened the people to remain firm in the commandments of truth:
