18:0 Յաղագս Վարդանայ մահուն ի թագաւորէն Արշակայ, նենգութեամբ իւրոյ եղբօրն Վասակայ սպարապետին:

18:0 The death of Vardan which was caused by king Arshak, through the treachery of his own brother Vasak:
|
18:1 Իսկ Վարդանն, մամիկոնեան տոհմին տանուտէրն, գայր հասանէր հրեշտակութեամբ յարքայէն Պարսից առ արքայն Հայոց Արշակ, եւ մատուցանէր զհրովարտակն առաջի նորա:
|
18:1 Now Vardan, the tanuter of the Mamikonean tohm, came on a mission from the king of Iran to king Arshak of Armenia, and presented him with the hrovartak:
|
18:2 Եւ պատմէր նմա ի նմանէ բանս խաղաղութեան եւ զհաշտութեան, եւ զերդմանցն հաստատութիւն:
|
18:2 And he told him about Shapuh’s words of peace and reconciliation and the confirmation by oaths:
|
18:3 Եւ տայր պատգամ, թէ որ ինչ եղեւն` այն ահա թողեալ լիցի վնասն. բայց դու յայսմ հետէ կաց յուխտին բանի, եւ մի՛ անցաներ ըստ բան երդմանցն քում օրինաց` յոր երդուար:

18:3 And he presented the message: “The crime in what has occurred will be overlooked, but after this stand firm in the vow and do not transgress the oath you swore according to your faith:
|
18:4 Ապա թէ ոչ` դու գիտես, եւ քո օրէնքն որում ստեսն:
|
18:4 Otherwise know that you have violated your faith:
|
18:5 Իսկ Արշակ թագաւորն սիրով ունէր եւ սիրով լսէր պատգամին, եւ հաւանէր զասացելոցն:
|
18:5 Now king Arshak received and heard the message with affection and believed what had been said:
|
18:6 Եւ խաղաղութեամբ արձակէր զմեծ նահապետն ի տուն իւր, զի երթիցէ հանգիցէ յաշխատութենէն յերկայն ճանապարհէն. եւ գնաց:
|
18:6 He peacefully released the great nahapet to his tun so that he might go and rest from the fatigue of the long journey. And Vardan went:
|
18:7 Եւ յորժամ եկն նահապետն Վարդան առ Արշակ, ոչ դիպեցաւ անդ կրսեր եղբայր նորին Վասակ առ արքայի:
|
18:7 When the nahapet Vardan had come to Arshak, his younger brother, Vasak, was not with the king:
|
18:8 Ապա յետ այսորիկ եկն Վասակն, եւ գրգռէր զթագաւորն ընդ իւրում եղբօրն երիցու, ասելով` թէ Վարդան է որ մատնէ զքեզ թագաւորին Պարսից, եւ կամի կորուսանել զքեզ. եթէ ոչ աճապարեսցես վաղագոյն սպանցես զնա, դու կորնչիս եւ աշխարհս Հայոց:

18:8 But subsequently Vasak arrived and stirred the king up against his senior brother, saying: “It was Vardan who betrayed you to the Iranian king and wants to destroy you. If you do not hurry and kill him immediately, you and the land of Armenia will be lost:
|
18:9 Ապա եւ կին թագաւորին եւս գրգռէր զթագաւորն սովին բանիւք, եւ զբանս զօրավարին Վասակայ հաւատարիմ առնէր նմա:
|
18:9 Furthermore, Arshak’s wife also aroused the king with similar words and made him accept general Vasak’s words as reliable:
|
18:10 Վասն զի ունէր նա զոխսն զայն ընդ Վարդանայ, զի նենգութեամբ եւ դաւով եւ մեծաւ երդմամբ սա այս Վարդան կոչեաց զԳնէլն զայր նորա, յորժամ սպանանէր զնա թագաւորն Արշակ:

18:10 For Paranjem held a grudge against Vardan since it was this Vardan who had treacherously, fraudulently, and with a great oath summoned her husband Gnel for king Arshak to kill:
|
18:11 Իսկ կինն զնոյն ոխութիւնս պահէր նմա, վասն այնորիկ աւելի եւս գրգռէր կինն թագաւորին ի վերայ նորա. մինչ զի եւ զօր գումարեցին ի վերայ Վարդանայ, զի երթեալք սպանցեն զնա. նա եւ ինքն իսկ իւր եղբայր Վասակ երթայր ի վերայ նորա:

18:11 Because the woman had kept her grudge against Vardan she even more provoked the king against him. Indeed, a force was assembled against Vardan to go and kill him, and his own brother Vasak went to effect it:
|
18:12 Ապա երթեալ գտանէին զնա յիւրում գաւառին Ի Տայս, յիւր ամուր բերդին` որում անուն Էրախանի կոչի:
|
18:12 They went and found him in his district of Tayk, in his secure fortress which was named Eraxani:
|
18:13 Իբրեւ տեսին զգունդն թէ Վասակ է, ոչ ինչ երկեան եւ ոչ զգուշացան կամ կասկածեցին. համարեցան զզօրն եղբօրն` թէ խաղաղութիւն է եկն նորա, մինչ իջին առ խորանին դուրս, զի էր հարեալ զխորանն ի ձոր յունջ բերդին:

18:13 When Vardan’s people saw that it was Vasak’s brigade, they neither feared, took precautions nor felt any doubt. They reasoned that since it was the force of Vardan’s brother, he had come in peace. So Vasak’s troops came and descended to the door of the tent, since Vardan had pitched his tent in the valley, at the foot of the fortress:

18:14 Եւ մարդիկ զօրացն Վասակայ էին ամենեքեան ի ծածուկ վառեալք եւ ի վերայ ագուցեալք հանդերձ:
|
18:14 Vasak’s troops were all secretly armed, wearing their regular clothing on top:
|
18:15 Եւ մինչ դեռ նա լուանայր զգլուխ իւր մերկանդամ, հասանէին սուսերօք բազում մարդիկ, եւ խոցոտէին զնա մինչ դեռ նա կայր խոնարհեալ` զի արկցեն ջուր ի վերայ նորա:

18:15 While Vardan, naked, was washing his head, many men with swords reached him, and stabbed him as he was bent over to pour water over himself:
|
18:16 Եւ ոչ ոք տայր ժամանել յառնել, զի անդէն ի կողի սպանանէին զնա:
|
18:16 He did not even have time to arise, since they struck and killed him from the side:
|
18:17 Եւ կինն նորա յղի էր, եւ հասեալ էին աւուրք ծննդեան իւրոյ:
|
18:17 Vardan’s wife was pregnant, and the day of delivery had arrived:
|
18:18 Մինչ դեռ ի վեր ի բերդին նստէր ի գահոյս իւրում, եղեւ գոյժ սաստիկ. իսկ նա իբրեւ զձայն գուժոյն լսէր, վազէր ի գահոյից անտի, եւ ընդ վազելն ծնանէր զմանուկն:

18:18 While she was seated on her chair in the upper part of the fortress, the terrible news came. When she heard the bad news, she jumped from her chair and as she ran, the baby was born:

18:19 Եւ կոչէին զանուն մանկանն յանուն հօր իւրոյ Վարդան:
|
18:19 The child was named after its father, Vardan:
