23:0 Յաղագս Մերուժանայ Արծրունոյ, որ ապստամբեաց յարքայէն Հայոց Արշակայ, եւ անկաւ առ թագաւորն Պարսից Շապուհ, եւ առաւել գրգռէր զպատերազմունսն. եւ թէ զիա՛րդ ուրացաւ յԱստուծոյ, եւ կամ զիա՛րդ եղեւ խոչընդակն եւ խոչոտն երկրին Հայոց մինչեւ յապայ:

23:0 Concerning how Meruzhan Arcruni rebelled against king Arshak of Armenia, fell in with the king of the Iranians, and further aggrevated the conflict; and how he apostasized God and thereafter became an obstacle for the country of Armenia:

23:1 Յայնմ ժամանակի ապստամբեաց յարքայէն Հայոց մի ոմն ի նախարարաց մեծամեծացն, Մերուժան անուն արծրունի. եւ չոգաւ եկաց առաջի թագաւորին Պարսից Շապհոյ, եւ դնէր ընդ նմա ուխտ երդմամբ, զի յաւիտեան ծառայ լիցի նմա:

23:1 In that period, one of the grandee naxarars named Meruzhan Arcruni rebelled from the king of Armenia, went before Shapuh, king of Iran, and swore an oath that he would be his servant forever:
|
23:2 Նախ ուրացաւ ի կենացն իւրոց` զոր յԱստուածն ունէր. զի եթող զօրէնս քրիստոնէութեան, եւ խոստովան եղեւ վասն անձին իւրոյ` թէ չեմ քրիստոնեայ. եւ կալաւ զօրէնս մազդեզանցն, այսինքն զմոգուցն. եպագ երկիր արեգական եւ կրակի, եւ խոստովան եղեւ` թէ աստուածք այն են` զոր թագաւորն Պարսից պաշտէ:

23:2 First Meruzhan apostasized his own life, for he had been a believer in God, but he abandoned the Christian faith and confessed that he was not Christian. And he accepted the faith of Mazdaism, that is, of the mages, worshipping the sun and the fire and confessing that whatever the king of Iran worshipped were the gods:

23:3 Եդ ուխտ ընդ Շապհոյ արքային Պարսից յայնմ հետէ. Թէ իցէ եւ կարասցէ յաղթել Շապուհ Հայոց, եւ ունել զաշխարհն, եւ ինձ դարձ լիցի յիմ աշխարհն եւ յիմ տունն, նախ ես` ասէ` շինեցից ատրուշան յիմում տանն սեպհականին, այս ինքն տուն կրակին պաշտելոյ:

23:3 Then he made a vow with Shapuh, king of Iran that: “If Shapuh can and does conquer and hold the land of Armenia, and if I return to my land and my tun, I will first build an atrushan, that is, a temple for worshipping the fire, in my own place:

23:4 Եւ կեանս եւ մահ դնէր ընդ նոսա, խոստացեալ բանիւք եւ արդեամբք:
|
23:4 And he put his life and death along with theirs, in word and deed:
|
23:5 Եւ զզօրսն Պարսից պատրաստէին առաւել եւս քան զառաջինն, եւ առաջնորդ ունէին զչարագործն Մերուժանն, ասպատակել յաշխարհն Հայոց:

23:5 They prepared even more Iranian troops than before to raid Armenia, and the malefactor Meruzhan was their leader:
|
23:6 Յանկարծօրէն այրացաւեր զերկիրն Հայոց առնէին առաջնորդ Մերուժանաւ. զարս տային ի կոխումն փղաց, եւ զկանայս ընդ ցից սայլից հանէին. առնուին կոտորէին զամենայն բնակիչսն վերնագաւառացն Հայոց:

23:6 Under the leadership of Meruzhan, the country of Armenia was burned and pillaged: men were trampled by elephants, women were impaled on wagons’ stakes, and they took and killed all the inhabitants of the upper districts of Armenia:

23:7 Մինչ դեռ թագաւորն Արշակ ի կողմանսն ստորին գաւառացն յԱնգեղ տանն էր յուտեստ, զմիջնաշխարհն քանդեալ բրեալ զօրքն Պարսից ապականէին:

23:7 While king Arshak was still in the area of the lower districts in Angeghatun seeing about provisions, the Iranian troops were demolishing and digging up the central parts of the land:
|
23:8 Ապա զօրաժողով լինէր Վասակ զօրավարն Հայոց, եւ որ հասին ի ժամանակի անդ ի ձեռն նորա տասն հազար հեծեալ ընդիր ընդիր եւ քաջ այրեւձի, կազմ զինու եւ բազում պատրաստութեամբ, եւ հանդերձ նոքօք խաղայր, ի կիրթ ձգեալ հասանէր զօրացն Պարսից:

23:8 So, the general of Armenia, Vasak, called up the troops. He then had [10000] select, brave cavalrymen which he organized and prepared. He went with them, hurrying to meet the Iranian troops:

23:9 Իսկ իբրեւ զգացին զօրավարքն զօրաց թագաւորին Պարսից` եթէ զօրաժողով է ի վերայ նոցա զօրավարն Հայոց Վասակ, զմնացորդս աշխարհին գերփեցին գերեցին առին եւ փախեան յաշխարհն իւրեանց ճեպով տագնապաւ:

23:9 Now when the generals of the Iranian king’s troops learned that the general of Armenia, Vasak, had massed troops and was coming against them, they plundered and enslaved those remaining in the land and fled to their own land at great speed:
|
23:10 Ապա զհետ կրթէր Վասակ մամիկոնեան, եւ երթայր հասանէր նոցա. չուէին ի սահմանս Ատրպատականին:

23:10 But Vasak Mamikonean went swiftly after them, catching up as they were going over the Atrpatakan border:
|
23:11 Իսկ զօրքն թագաւորին Պարսից թողին զգերին, եւ փախստական լինէին հանդերձ Մերուժանաւն:
|
23:11 Now the troops of the king of Iran left the captives and fled with Meruzhan:
|
23:12 Եւ թափէր անչափ եւ անթիւ զամենայն զառեալ գերութիւնն, եւ դառնային խաղաղութեամբ առ թագաւորն Արշակ:
|
23:12 After freeing a countless, immeasurable host, all who had been taken in captivity, Vasak and the troops returned in peace to king Arshak:
