 3:52 For he did not give the Persian King any pause at all but sent summons for many troops to the Ghor Pass; he gathered the entire forces of Georgia, the troops of the Lpink and Chiḷbk, Vat, Gav, Gluar, Khras and Hechmatak, Paskh and Poskh, Piwkuan and all the forces of Tavasparan, from the hill and plain and all the mountain strongholds:

3:54 Զայս ամենայն իբրեւ արար եւ կատարեաց ըստ հրամանի թագաւորին, աւր ըստ աւրէ գրէր եւ ցուցանէր մեծ հազարապետին Պարսից, որ ղաւղեալ եւ թաքուցեալ էր ի քաղաքն Փայտակարան:

 3:54 Accomplishing all this in accordance with the king’s order, he wrote daily reports to the great hazarapet of Persia, who was lurking hidden in the city of Paytakaran:

 3:56 Having summoned Vasak to his presence with all the princes of his party, he gave many gifts from the treasury to them and to the soldiers who were in his enterprise:

3:57 Տանէր զառաջեաւ եւ զուրացեալ երիցունսն. ցուցանէր, հաստատէր եւ յայտ առնէր, եթէ սոքաւք որսացայց զնոսա՝ քակտել ի միաբան ուխտէն:

 3:57 He also brought before him the apostate priests, indicating and assuring that “through these I shall seduce the others to break away from the united covenant:

3:58 Իսկ հազարապետն իբրեւ զայն լսէր՝ յոյժ շնորհակալ լինէր երկոցունցն, եւ յոյս առաջի դնէր նոցա. «Եթէ լիցի մեր յաղթութիւն, զայլոց քահանայից կեանս դոցա շնորհեցից, եւ զմեծ վաստակ դոցա ցուցից թագաւորին:

 3:58 When the hazarapet heard this, he was very grateful to the priests and held out to them the hope that “if the victory is ours, I shall bestow on these the property of the other priests and shall indicated to the king their great services:

3:59 Եւ այսպէս շարժեաց եւ շփոթեաց զաշխարհն Հայոց, մինչեւ զբազում եղբարս հարազատս քակեաց ի միմեանց, ոչ եթող միաբան զհայր եւ զորդի, եւ ի մէջ խաղաղութեան արար խռովութիւն:

 3:59 In this fashion he brought disturbance and confusion to Armenia, with the result that he split many blood brothers from each other, did not leave father and son united, and wrought tumult in the midst of peace:

3:60 Եւ անդէն իսկ յիւրում աշխարհին եղբաւրորդիք երկու էին նորա ի սուրբ ուխտին առաքինութեան. գրեաց եւ եցոյց վասն նոցա յարքունիս, եւ էառ իշխանութիւն ի վերայ կենաց նոցա, մերժեաց եւ եհան զնոսա յաշխարհէն, զի մի՛ այլ դարձցին անդրէն:

 3:60 In his own province there were two nephews of his in the holy covenant of virtue. He wrote a report about them to the court; he received authority over their property and expelled them from the land so that they might never return:

3:61 Հալածեաց եւ փախոյց զամենայն միայնակեացս աշխարհին, ոյք հայհոյէին զանդարձ ամբարշտութիւն նորա:

 3:61 He persecuted and put to flight all the monks of the land who cursed his inflexible impiety:

3:62 Արար եւ կատարեաց զամենայն չարիսն ընդդէմ ճշմարտութեանն. եւ զոր ինչ ոչ գիտէին անաւրէն հեթանոսքն՝ իմացուցանէր նոցա, եւ վասն ուխտին քրիստոնէութեան, եթէ որպէս հնարիւք կարասցէ բառնալ յաշխարհէն Հայոց:

 3:62 He accomplished all this wickedness against the truth and informed the irreligious heathen of what they did not know, namely, by what means he might be able to remove the Christian clergy from Armenia:

3:63 Զայս ամենայն չարիս իբրեւ ետես ի նմա Միհրներսեհ, քան յանձն իւր՝ առաւել ի նա էր յուսացեալ:

 3:63 When Mihrnerseh saw all this evil in him, he put his hopes in him more than in himself:

3:64 Հարցանէր եւ ստուգէր՝ թէ քանի՞ այր կայ ի Հայոց աշխարհին ի գնդին Վարդանայ ընդ ամենայն բազմութիւնն:

 3:64 He inquired and discovered how many men there were in Armenia in the total host of Vardan’s army:

3:65 Իբրեւ լուաւ ի նմանէ՝ թէ աւելի քան զվաթսուն հազար են, խնդրէր եւս տեղեկութիւն վասն իւրաքանչիւր անձին քաջութեան, եւ կամ քանի՛ այն ոք իցեն՝ որ սպառազէնքն իցեն, եւ կամ քանի՛ այն ոք իցեն՝ որ մերկ առանց զինու աղեղնաւորք իցեն. սոյնպէս եւ վասն վահանաւոր հետեւակացն:

 3:65 When he learned from him that there were more than sixty thousand, he asked for even more information about each one’s individual prowess: how many wore full armor, how many were archers without armor, and likewise concerning the infantry with shields:

3:66 Եւ իբրեւ լուաւ զթիւ համարոյ բազմութեանն, առաւել եւս փութացաւ ուսանել՝ թէ քանի՛ք իցեն պարագլուխք քաջ նահատակացն, զի երիս ընդ միոյ պատրաստեսցէ առ մի մի ի նոցանէ, թող զայլն ամենայն:

 3:66 When he heard the total number of the army, he was even more anxious to learn how many leaders there were of the brave champions, so that he might prepare three against each one of them, let alone all the rest:

3:67 Այլ եւ դրաւշից անգամ իւրաքանչիւրոց տեղեկանայր ի նմանէ. եւ թէ քանի՛ գունդ զզաւրսն բաժանիցեն, եւ ո՛ր ոք ի նոցանէ սաղարք լինիցին, եւ ո՛ր զաւրագլուխ յորմէ կողմանէ յռազմ մտանիցէ, եւ զինչ անուանք իւրաքանչիւր համհարզացն իցեն, եւ քանի՛ փողահարք ի մէջ գնդին ձայնիցեն:

 3:67 He also inquired from him about each of the standards: into how many companies they divided the army, which of them were generals, which commander would attack from which side, what were the names of each one’s adjutants, how many trumpeters would sound in the company:

3:68 Ղակի՞շ գործիցեն արդեւք, եթէ արձակ բանակեսցին. ճակատ առ ճակա՞տ գործիցեն, եթէ համագունդ ընդ մի տեղի դրդիցեն:

 3:68 Would they make an entrenchment or camp in the open? Would they oppose battle line to battle line or set all their forces against one spot:

3:69 Ո՛ ոք ի նոցանէ երկբայս կայցէ, եւ կամ ո՛ ոք ի նոցանէ զանձն ի մահ դնելով գուն գործիցէ:

 3:69 Which of them would be hesitant, and which of them would fight to the death:

3:70 Եւ իբրեւ զայս ամենայն տեղեկացաւ ի նմանէ, կոչէր զամենայն զաւրագլխեանն, պատուէր հրամանի տայր ամենեցուն յանդիման նորա, զի խրատու նորա լուիցեն ամենեքեան:

 3:70 After he had been informed by him about all this, he summoned all his generals, and in his presence commanded them all to heed his advice:

3:71 Եւ զամենայն զաւրսն զաւրագլխաւքն հանդերձ յանձն առնէր առն միում յաւագացն, որում անուն էր Մուշկան Նիւսալաւուրտ:

 3:71 He entrusted all the troops with their commanders to one of the nobles, whose name was Mushkan Niusalavurt:

3:72 Եւ ինքն խաղայր անդէն գնայր յերկիրն Արեւելից. եւ յանդիման եղեալ մեծի թագաւորին, պատմէր զամենայն անցս իրացն, զիւր հնարաւոր իմաստութիւնն եւ զՎասակայ խաբեբայ պատրանս հայթայթանացն. ո՛րպէս զառաջինն զիւր զամբարշտութիւնն կամեցաւ ծածկել այնու՝ զի քակեալ երկպառակեաց զգունդն Հայոց:

 3:72 He himself then marched to the East and presented himself before the great king, informing him of the course of events, of his own cunning wisdom, and of Vasak’s deceitful subterfuge, namely, how he had wished to hide his original impiety because he had broken and divided the Armenian army:

3:73 Իբրեւ լուաւ զայս ամենայն թագաւորն ի բերանոյ մեծ հազարապետին, դառնացաւ յանձն իւր, եւ ասէ անսուտ երդմամբ. «Եթէ ապրեսցի անաւրէնն այն ի մեծ պատերազմէն, մեծաւ անարգանաւք տամ ըմպել նմա զբաժակն դառնութեան մահու:

 3:73 When the great king heard all this from the mouth of the great hazarapet, he was inwardly embittered and uttered an inviolable oath: “If that impious one survives the great war, I shall make him drink the cup of bitter death in great dishonor:
